Encounter all Kahn's master pieces.
In one book, you can see through Kahn's famous works, like Salk Institute of Biography Reaserch and Yale Center for British Art. Nice photos and descriptions. This book can be the beginning step for approaching Kahn's philosophy of architecture. He say, "Existence will determines the every nature of things". He used the simple forms to establish a fine-art-class architecture style. Kahn's works could be said as "Simple in FORM, but not simple in MIND."

A great overview of Kahn's career.
A beautiful book...It's filled with so much information about Kahn's major projects. Interesting, well-written text and dozens of sketches and model photos accompany each major project. I'd never heard of Grant Mudford, but his big, color photos are beautiful. There's a list of all of Kahn's projects and buildings from the 1920s until his death in 1974, and a section of Kahn's travel sketches and artwork. The pages are large, the print quality is impressive, and the impeccable graphic design, by Massimo Vignelli with Abigail Sturges, suits Kahn's style perfectly. And it's a good buy, too.

Gushing but quite interesting and entertaining
Ms. Meadows tells fascinating stories of her years working with Jackie Gleason, although sometimes she heaps the praise on a bit thick. Nevertheless, this autobiography is an absorbing read and a must for any "Honeymooners" fan.

Top of the Line
Audrey Meadows gave a five star performance for her writing in this impossible to put down book. I read it in one sitting and enjoyed every moment of her stories of years ago. Ms. Meadows is a gifted actress as well as author. Her anticdotes are as hilarious as the series. And it's good that she respected all of her fellow actors and actresses while writing her beautiful tales of what went on behind the scenes during the run of the "Honeymooners".

The Magician of Lublin

Singer writes the ultimate story, a must read for all.
To those who might have dismissed Isaac B. Singer because he is perceived to be a "Jewish" writer writing about "Jewish themes", I ask them to please read this book. The theme of the novel encompasses all aspects of human behavior and develops the omnipresent theme of ambivalence of action in making a decision. The book can be read in no more than two days, so put it to the top of your summer reading list.

A timeless tale of human emotions
Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991) is one of the true literary giants of twentieth century literature. In this eight cassette, 9 hour, unabridged audiobook edition we are treated to one of his best stories, aptly narrated by Larry Keith. The Magician Of Lublin is a timeless tale of human emotions, questions, and quandaries as young Yasha's reckless courage takes him to the very edge of catastrophe. Singer had an unrivaled gift for creating very real, believable characters caught up in the vicissitudes of life and with whom we can all readily identify. The Magician Of Lublin is a "must" for the legions of Singer fans and would admirable serve to introduce a whole new generation to this master storyteller and his art.

Simple and profound
Just when you think all's been said on a topic, Joseph Ratzinger throws yet more light from a different yet utterly orthodox angle. I bought this book thinking Scott Hahn was co-author, but he writes only the foreword. Ratzinger isn't afraid to raise difficult questions and tackle them head-on. O, the lucidity of the catholic mind.

The theological centrality of Jewish-Christian relations
Cardinal Ratzinger presents a lucid summary of the central theological issues arising out of the covenant shared by Jews and Christians. Insisting (properly) that the Abrahamic and Chrisitian covenants represent a single movement of God in his work of reconciliation of human kind, Ratzinger shows how the work of Christ is a fulfillment of God's promise announced in the covenant with Abraham-- 'all the nations of the world shall be blessed through you'

Ratzinger recognizes that for this blessing to be realized, priority must be given to the relationship between Jews and Christians. Until Christians recognize their fundamental kinship with Judaism and Jews, and until that recognition leads to reconciliation between them, the proclamation of God's reconciling work in the world will be truncated and compromised. He recognizes that the often tragic misunderstandings in Chrisitian Jewish relationships raise very specific difficulties, especially for Jews, and Christians have a major responsibility to address those difficulties.

Ratzinger's presentation should be read by Christians, Jews and others for the clear and consise scriptural and theological perspective it offers. I am not a Roamn Catholic but one need not be Roman Catholic to appreciate the charity and discipline that inform this work.

Marxism and Problems of Linguistics

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews Marxism and Linguistics
At the conclusion of the Second World War, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was split into two wings separated by ideology. The managerial/technocratic elite that had developed and accumulated political strength in the war years had gained ascendency in the party. This threatened steer the Party away from the class struggle ideology of the pre-World War II era.

Opposing the mangerial/technocratic elite were the party members who, while recognizing the necessity of temporarily putting aside the class struggle ideology in favor of the patriotic/nationalist ideology for the duration of the war, now wished to return to the true-faith of class struggle. A campaign was initiated by "Pravada" the offical newspaper of the Party to support the return to class struggle as the primary ideology.

This article written by Stalin in 1950 served as his endorsement of the "Pravada" campaign. Language and the definition of words served as one of the main battlegrounds in the early stages of this struggle. The article serves as one of the few original pieces avalable in English which provides some light on this post-war campaign in the Soviet Union.

C Bloggerfeller, Esquire, reviews the Great Cunning Linguist
Hurriedly recognized on its publication in the Soviet Union in 1951 as the greatest breakthrough in the science of linguistics in this or any other century, Comrade Stalin's book on Marxism and Linguistics has taken a long time to work its unique magic on the West. At the time only the visionary Eric Blair managed to appreciate the immense impact the Great Statesman had made on language in general - he knew that Stalin certainly had his way with words. Treasured by a generation of Eastern European schoolchildren for its fresh and engaging style, the work loses none of its charm in translation. The writing is effortless (it's a pity that reading it isn't quite so effortless but we can't all be geniuses of this stature and the book is definitely worth struggling with). You can easily see why Stalin was soon acclaimed as "Velikii Khitry Lingvist" (which might be translated as the Great Cunning Linguist). I was surprised how many of Stalin's insights were still relevant today, for instance the idea that "All literary works are written in some language or other" was a real discovery for me. I was also relieved to learn that there was no need for language to transform itself completely after the Revolution (as were the members of the audience at the first reading of these lectures who were unaware that they had still been speaking Russian since 1917). I found this book a true re-education. A linguistic work to rank with Chairman Mao's " Norwegian Intransitive Verbs: A Beginner's Guide".

There's a better bargain out there
"McSorley's Wonderful Saloon" is, indeed, a wonderful compilation of Joseph Mitchell at the height of his uncanny literary powers. But Mitchell fans should be aware that all of its contents are likewise to be found in a previous compilation ("Up In The Old Hotel")which also includes "The Bottom of the Harbor," "Old Mr. Flood" and "Joe Gould's Secret." Fortunate readers who already possess "Up In The Old Hotel" should acquire the other newly republished Mitchell compilation, "My Ears Are Bent," a terrific collection of newspaper articles written by before Mitchell became embalmed at "The New Yorker."

Return of a classic
What a pleasure to see this classic returned to print. Mr. Mitchell had a wonderful ear in his time, and now almost fifty years later, the tone is still strong, and the places that he told us of are mostly gone. Thankfully, McSorley's is still with us, but the Beefsteak Party (The Second best of the stories) and the theater on Park Row are long gone, as is the Third Avenue El. No one rides that anymore in the summer to cool off. There is a reason why this was voted one of the top 100 pieces of American Journalism in the 20th century by New York University's journalism department. (it placed 84th)

Buy it to read the bit on McSorley's, "The Old House at Home," and buy it to read "All You can Hold for Five Bucks," buy it to read one wonderful story at a time. Its good to see it back.

Mountain Spirits: A Chronicle of Corn Whiskey from King James' Ulster Plantation to America's Appalachians and the Moonshine Life

Informative and fun history of an American way of life.
This book gives the basics of making moonshine, not for instruction (though there is enough to get started), but as practical background for understanding the history and life of home whiskey makers. This is no "dry" history, rather it focuses on the more colorful aspects and characters of the craft. Relates how both government greed and criminal corruption helped destroy what had been a lawful legacy of rural American culture.

A Spirited History
An artful mix of verbatim quotes and scholarly research, you cheer when Thomas Jefferson lifts the excise tax, and you are saddened by the corruption that Prohibition unleashed. Above all you admire the integrity and the intense vitality of the colorful moonshiners, and wish they had been your friends. I hope that, somewhere, in some hidden valley, on some sheltered branch of a river, there's somebody out there tonight keeping the art and craft of "corn likker" alive.

Thank you, Mr. Dabney, for a wonderful book.
