Stopping for a Spell
This was a cute book for young kids - in the tradition of Dianna Wynne Jones. It was light-hearted and funny, and I enjoyed it as much as the kids I was babysitting did! Strongly recomended!

Strange Gourmets: Sophistication, Theory, and the Novel (Series Q)
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (October, 1997)
Author: Joseph Litvak
Amazon base price: $54.95
Average review score:

Great readings, but not as sophisticated as hoped
Litvak is always a good close reader, and his analyses of Proust and Thackeray are fascinating. But he seems to be merely claiming in the introduction that we should should recuperate sophistication for queer politics for no good reason other than it suits his aims; the introduction also does a lousy job differentiating between the different kinds of connoisseurship--such as the truly sophisticated, the trendy, the appeal to mere snobbery, etc. It presses many of the right political buttons but I think he should have spent a bit more time in honing his introductory ideas before publishing the book.

An exhilarating model for cultural studies and queer theory
This book is gorgeously, hilariously written and includes some of the most incisive and original literary/cultural/queer criticism being done. The Proust section alone is worth the price of the book--but then, so is each of the other sections. Litvak clearly loves the books he's writing about, but that never dampens his relish in scoring off of them, either--his mix of identification, delight, and aggression is contagious. (At least, I hope it is.) If you ever find yourself wondering why people do critical theory after all, this book will remind and revitalize you.

Highly Overpriced by Publisher for Quick Profit Seller
Don't bother buying this book unless you 'absolutely' have to have it for a class you might be taking or for special research. I found this book to be better than most, however it is ridiculously overpriced and would best be left on the shelf to collect dust than to fork over a whole days' wages on this book.

Strategic Management in the Context of Globalizatiion
This book is a detailed investigation of strategic management in the context of globalization and competitiveness. An integrated approach is used, but firm-based theory of strategic management is stressed throughout the book. Cases included in the book are chosen properly in relation with the topics, that is theory is clearly connected to the real experiences. Especially, topics titled as "Cooperative Strategy" , "Corporate Governance" , "Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation" will be very useful to better understand the planning dynamics.

The book is divided into two sections. One is assigned for theory and the other is assigned for cases. Cases are updated and includes the most popular and fabulous companies such as "Amazon.com". Overall, I recommend this comprehensive book (1008 p.) to readers who wish to have a grand source !

An Asset to Faith if Read with Discernment
This book is quite interesting, for without being syncretistic, it compares the foundation of ancient Taoism--all things under absolute sovereign control of another--with the Bible's foundation--God has ordained all things that comes to pass.

The author does not claim to have actually translated the Tao Te Ching (81 poems), but has attempted to take several good translations and give a more interpretative reading from a Christian perspective without actually promoting Taoism as a legitimate religious alternative. The effort has worked quite well, but it must be warned that Taoism and Christianity, apart from the issue of sovereignty, are drastically different religions. Therefore, a Christian must avoid any temptation to think that Taoist literature can be merged as a source of truth with the Bible.

I find that the one benefit I've truly appreciated in reading the Tao is the different way truths of sovereignty are expressed. One must remember that the Bible is an eastern/Oriental based writing, not a western one, though western elements are sure to be found. Reading the Tao helps to pull one's mind closer to the thought processes of the ancient Jewish mind. Avoid becoming syncretistic, and avoid becoming an actual Taoist, and I believe many a western Christian can be benefited from reading this book. The western Christian is the one who can most benefit from reading this text of the Tao, for the middle and far eastern thought processes are already more in line with the thought processes underlying the Bible. On the other hand, there are many professed CHristians today who deny the Bible's teaching that God has ordained all things, so they would therefore be offended by this book, and by such a view of the Bible, as teaching that all is ordained without being fatalistic.

But so be it. For the Christian who accepts the Biblical teaching of God's sovereignty, Petulla's book can be an asset if used discerningly. I might add one thing that regardless of one's view of Taoism and sovereignty, Poem 80 in Petulla's interpretation is beautiful and the last stanza has become a goal for our family, to make the life of our home unsurpassible in the fulfillment of the lives of each of our family members. If you read no other, try to get a copy of this particular poem as interpreted by Petulla.

Christian meditations on the Tao
I think this book accomplishes what it sets out to achieve - an American Christian reading of a key text of Taoism. Having used the Tao Te Ching in morning meditation for more than a decade, the author sets out to show 'how easily it can be read as a very impressive Christian text' (p. vii).

The book contains a new rendition of the Tao Te Ching's 81 chapters, with each chapter followed by a brief meditation on Christian and biblical themes which relate to it. The interpretation is clearly a Christian one, and as such is helpful and illuminating. The meditations show the congruence between Christian and Taoist themes. The layout makes this book ideal as a way of using the Tao Te Ching for personal, or even public, Christian prayer, especially on a daily basis. Used as such, the Tao Te Ching would form a kind of cycle of meditation and reflection, not unlike a traditional use of the Psalms for daily worship.

My only qualm about this book is that the reader should be aware that this is quite far from being a translation of the Tao Te Ching. Rather, it is very much an interpretation from a Christian point of view. As such, the author minimises the potential conflicts between Christian and Taoist readings of the same text, perhaps unduly so. I think overall there is a greater engagement with Christianity than with Taoism, although this is not unreasonable, given the author's aims. The result falls just the right side of 'Taoism Lite'. For Christians who are interested in Taoism, this is a good starting point, but it should only be a starting point.

A similar book worth looking up is John Mabry's 'God as Nature Sees God'. This has a less useful format for prayer or meditation, but a more extensive commentary.

If you are interested in the ways westerners have interpreted Taoism, J.J. Clarke's 'The Tao of the West' is well worth reading.

Teleworking: International Perspectives: From Telecommunting to the Virtual Organisation (Management of Technology and Innovation)

An excellent overview of research for in-depth study
A well-structured collection of empirical research-based articles which provide useful background reading for any academic or advanced student. A variety of mostly European sources make it more relevant and applicable than most US based journal articles and books. Not really suitable for "dissection" or for students below Honours level, as much of the theory is not self contained, and requires considerable academic underpinning. I have found it indispensable, however, for my teaching of ICT-enabled organisational innovations to third and fourth Business Information Management undergraduates.

Comprehensive survey of the state of the art
Paul Jackson and Jos van der Wielen are researchers and lecturers with deep experience of investigating and analysing telework. In this book they have assembled and edited contributions by some 20 experts from a wide range of disciplines to produce the most comprehensive perspective on the subject available to date. Each chapter has a complete set of references, making this a valuable start point for new research, as well as an important record of the state of the art in telework-related studies at the end of the twentieth century.

Not great but the only thing like it.
This is a compilation of materials from other sources, most of which are readily available to everyone but it's very convenient to have all the information in one place. However, some of the information is inaccurate, some of the illustrations are out of date, and many are poor copies of photocopies that aren't legible. I find this inexcusable in a book intended for designers and one that is $100+. Unfortunately, it is the only book of its kind. I recommend double checking any information that you take from it. Reznikoff is the only comparable book and that is even more out of date. At least Reznikoff was well produced though.

Time Saver Standards for Interior Design and Space Planners
This is a a "must have" for anyone in the interior design industry. The best book since Architectural Graphic Standards for the Interior Design Profession. Very Specific and all inclusive, excellent details for just about every application.

Required purchase for my Interior Design Students to use through out their educational and professional careers.

one of the best NLP resources for trainers
After looking around for a while, I must admit that it is the best book about training I've found (as long as you're not involved in the classic education). The book offers a good and complete overview of what training is all about. If you know something about training, you will find out how much you already know. A nice feature of this book is its use of brain maps to offer a section overview, and really each chapter ends with an overview, offering the key points. My conclusion? If you want to know about training, get this book! If you want to get training in training, follow a seminar!

Transracial Adoption and Foster Care
This book is an interesting read but it should be retitled "Transracial Adoption and Foster Care: Don't Ever Do It. Practice Issues for Professionals "

It does not offer much support or guidance in placing children in homes of different races. It focuses on the statistics and the how-tos of getting children placed in same-race families, then begrudgingly offers some guidelines for the lowly professional who is forced into transracial placements. The stats were insightful and often surprising, which makes it a good reference for facts and resources.

Example of a disturbing scenario: -James, biracial, age 2. -With the "T" family since 2 months old, who want to adopt James. -Social worker doesn't think race issues are sufficiently addressed in home.

"James is able to...attach to significant others as demonstrated by his attachment to Mr. & Mrs. T. James would experience typical separation anxiety if removed from Mr. & Mrs. T's home. Since James' ability to attach is within normal ranges, he should be able to bond with different or adoptive parents, if properly prepared for adoption."

-Nine months later, Mr. and Mrs. T were re-evaluated for James' adoption. They were then able to answer the social worker's race questions sufficiently and were then allowed to adopt James.

Scenarios illustrating situations that come up in multi-race families weren't always given problem-solving solutions, sometimes leaving the reader with more questions. On an emotional level, the book often left this reader steamed and offended, but after a cool-down period, I would have to recommend it to those interested in this subject. Transracial placement is after all, not a subject without opposition. It is informative to know what the professionals are being told. Overall, the book exudes opposition to transracial adoption and foster care. It does, however, contain compelling, experience-based information from the author's career.

Succinct and Empowering
This book goes beyond the discussion of "should we or shouldn't
we have transracial adoptions". Although it is directed toward
professionals it is also very useful for adoptive parents as
well. The book avoids the emotional turmoil and discussion of
"what's right or wrong about transracial adoptions". Nor does
the book attempt to make parents feel guilty or inadequate to
adopt transracially. The reader is given information that compels
them to:
1) appreciate the challenges of transracial adoptions,
2) appreciate the needs of children adopted transracially, and;
3) gives them the skills and resources an adoptive or foster
parent needs to acquire.

The book does an excellent job of assisting adoptive parents to
judge their own skills and ability to adopt a child of a diffe-
rent race, rather than being judged by a professional or someone
else. Self assessment guides are even provided to adoptive pa-
rents for this purpose.

The case studies in the book provide examples to professionals
and parents that are clear and practical in highlighting the
issues and skills in preparing for and parenting children in
transracial adoptions. It is a practical "how to" book, without
the emotional turmoil and rhetoric that surrounds the topic of
transracial adoptions. I would recommend it to both professionals
and adoptive parents, as well as parents considering transracial
adoption or foster care.

A Treatise on Obligations, Considered in a Moral and Legal View: Volumes 1 & 2
Published in Hardcover by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. (December, 1999)
Authors: Robert Joseph Pothier and Francois-Xavier Martin
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Useful not only for historical purposes
Pothier wrote before "legal science" became de rigeur on the Continent. Hence his treatise is of some value to Common Law attorneys studying the contract law in the Civil Law tradition, since his approach is more easily digestible than otherwise would be the case.

Reprint of 1761 textbook on Contract Law.
The book was originally written in French but was transalted by Evans (1805) and others and was popular in America and very influential in international contract law. (Pothier is pronounced "poh tee ay.") Pothier was a major inspiration for the 1804-date French Civil Code. The material in the book suplements Corbin and Williston and the Restatement (Second) of Contracts.

This is not the book to get students interested in trees.
This is primarily an ID guide to 188 native and naturalized trees, and another 84 that are commonly planted in what is termed the Central Hardwood Forests, defined as those portions of eastern North America dominated by deciduous trees. This is an octopus-like area that includes all or parts of 30 states and provinces to varying degrees. The only states wholly within the "shading" are IL,IN,RI, and KY; nearly so are CT, OH, TN, and MO. Small to large chunks of MN, WI, MI, PA, WV, IA,NE, KS, OK, TX, AK, AL, GA, NC, VA, MD, NJ, NY, MA, NH, Quebec and Ontario fall within the boundary; but ME and VT are inexplicably outside it, as are vast areas of deciduous forest in New York state. Few if any of the trees in this book are restricted to the Central Hardwood Forests -- most range widely beyond the boundary of this arbitrarily defined region, and many barely enter it at all. The reader would be better served if the book simply covered trees of the northeastern United States, without contriving an ecological framework for choosing species to write about. Most of the book consists of tree descriptions alphabetized from Abies to Zanthoxylum, with over 900 photos of varying quality, and maps for most species. Data headings are Habit, Bark, Twigs, Buds, Leaves, Fruit, Wood, Habitat and Range, Propagation, Wildlife Value, Landscape Value, and Best Recognizable Features. Discussions are very brief. A section of 116 color photos adds a welcome break to the cramped and confusing composition of the text. Summer and winter keys to genera are confusing due to the inclusion of numerals referring to previous couplets, and left unexplained; and because there is no identation, or spacing between couplets. The book is sturdily made and contains valid information, but is uninteresting in its style and mostly visually unappealing. It is not likely to inspire students.

If you love Hardwood Forests this book is for you.
This book is the best i have ever laid hands on for describing the trees of the eastern forest. I have a B.S. in Forestry, Im a certified Arborist and am currently working on a M.S. in Forestry. I have seen lots of books on trees and this is the best. Period.
