More than anything, Frank Stewart challenges you to think. The examples he gives are designed to topple the very paradigms, or "natural plays", that burden our development as bridge players. Many times, after working through a problem, I've thought, "Wow! I never thought of that!". It really opens your eyes. If you're an intermediate player, who wants to improve your game, this book is for you!

This charming small volume is an alphabetical dictionary of terms common to and distinctive of Cambridge University in England. Stubbings is a Classicist by profession, and he explains both the origins of the terms (many of which come from Latin of course) as well as their present and past meanings. Far from being a simple dictionary, many of the entries are delightful small essays on some aspect of university life, from colleges to fellows, from gowns to orators, from scholars to sizars.

While many of the terms in the volume refer to practices and offices that no longer exist, others are very much alive today, and some deserve wider currency. My own favorite is the verb "to be progged" (to be caught by a proctor while committing some offense).

If you are fond of life in the academic world, or of the history of education, or of odd dialects and strange vocabularies, you will derive much pleasure from this volume. It is a window into a rich and often quirky social environment that is very different from the bureaucratized and slogan-filled universities of today.

By the way, "bedders" are (or were) college bedmakers, largely supplanted today by modern custodians of one sort or another; "bulldogs" are university constables; and "bedells" were once the attendants of the head of the university but now their office involves little more than carrying the university mace on ceremonial occasions.

This booklet provides an excellent reference for anyone who is triing to understand the official Catholic teaching of Mary the Mother of God. As with all of Father Chacon and Jim Burnham's books it gives a historical and biblical basis for the views of the Catholic Church. It shows the consistency of the teachings for over 2000 thousand years and to the shock of many Protestants actually shows that the views, of their founders, about Mary are actually the same as what Catholics believe today. This book is easy to read and understand and is well researched and presented.

I had the luck to take Dr. Seitz's class in behavior medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. His text was one of our's with Wedding also for those familiar. Anyways, his book was absolutely excellent. If was great in that it was brief and to the meat of the subject. It contained many lists and acronyms which I just can't seem to avoid in behavior science. This is a great foundation book to review 1st year medical school Behavioral Science. I thought it was very readable and Dr. Seitz has even thrown in a joke here and there to keep you awake. A great book for review, and a must have for all 1st years. I wish the other Made ridiculously simples were this good. Thanks Dr. Seitz
Montana WWAMI is the best

Sir Frank Price, who I'd never heard of, unfolds his rags to riches life-story in such a way that you can see the places, hear the voices and smell the smells. He speaks of his dealings with the Royal Family and some of the famous politicians I can remember from the 60's and the 70's, in exactly the same way as he tells us about his family, and the characters around him in the slums of Birmingham.

Everybody comes to life as "real". There must be thousands of people out there with facinating life stories. I recommend everybody to look at this chap's tale. Wonderful and impossible to put down.

You know when you've got a good book when the bathwater goes cold and your still reading! This woud make a great BBC mini-series!

An excellent starting place for information regarding this lesser know breed. Very helpful and informative. It answered more than a few questions we had regarding our dog's behavior. If you have a Belgain Sheepdog, this book is a must. If you are considering the breed, read this book FIRST.

This is the best book for someone who wants to move up into the jazz arena. I was a musician for twenty years before I was brave enough to play solo jazz piano and this is one of the books that allowed me to get much better. I had bought every other jazz piano book and I did not get anything out of them. Only this and one other Mantooth book did it, with a little help from one other book. Buy it, you'll never regret it.

If you're an entertainer/guitarist/keyboardist who wants to add real depth to your playing and repetoire, here's a powerful shortcut. Not only is it a great fake book with elegant chords, but it's also a mini course in chord substitution basics. This is pure gold. Frank Mantooth is a rare guy who can play and teach with equal expertise.

I read the review of Salvidio's Vita Nuova by another reader and agree implicitly: Salvidio takes himself out of the work and puts the original author in. With that said, I would like to comment on my recent reading of "Between Troy and Florence." I read the first section, "The Death of Achilleus," and was hooked instantly. Salvidio makes it his business to have the words flow effortlessly off the page and into the mind of the reader. "The Death..." was truly moving. The rest of the book works in the same manner (although that 1st part is my favorite). Even if one is not familiar with Dante or Homer, the book and the poetry can still be enjoyed. Salvidio does not show off (as some translators do). He simply gives the reader the best of his predecessors. I thank him for that and I am sure they would, too.

This book presents an excellent methodology by which clinicians can understand and analyze their clients in a way that leads to clear strategic interventions.
