ok read, but a little flaky at times
The author has an excellent writing style. the book is easy to follow and easy to read. the book does provide spiritual insights and reflections. I didn't think that Oz had anything to do with yoga, but I guess the author applies that to the story. In that sense, it was a little too new age for me. One thing I do appreciate though is the author's dedication to the story and his analysis of the characters. This is a good New Age style book.

A Totally Amazing Book You'll Enjoy
I first read the author's other book, "Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic" and was totally blown away by his insight and wisdom. I've read (and continue to read) as much as I can on subjects of yoga and spirituality and was so impressed by this book that I wanted to find another by the same author. I was frankly not too excited when I saw that his other book was entitled "Spritual Journeys along the Yellow Brick Road." I'm probably the only former kid in America who didn't like "The Wizard of Oz" and had to force myself to see the whole movie from beginning to end. I'm also a fussy reader, and had to decide if I really wanted to read this book. The other reviews posted on this site were so positive I decided to give it a chance. I was not in the least disappointed!! I would never have thought of the "Wizard of Oz" as a spritual journey, but the author clearly and capably demonstrates this for his readers. This book was not only highly entertaining and a very enjoyable reading experience, but it teaches many valuable lessons without seeming to do so. Whether or not you are a fan of the movie or the Frank Baum book, I would highly and unquestioningly recommend this book to anyone who is on his/her own spiritual journey, or to anyone who just wants to have a good time enjoying a great book.

Making Enlightenment Fun
I found Darren's honesty in telling his stories and relating them to another story that we all know and love a wonderful way to bring spiritual principle to daily living. I have always loved The Wizard of Oz, has have so many millions, but I love the connection of the characters to deeper aspects of myself. A great and fun read for all.

Classic Science Fiction
"Under Pressure" succeeds where so many of today's doorstopper novels fail: Herbert is able to sketch believable, smart characters quickly and desicively then send them out into a taut plot that keeps one turning pages. A smart, smart novel by a master. Don't miss it!

under pressure by frank herbert
great book-would make a great movie as i love submarine movies!!updating this for the big sceen would take very little effort. i think of this story as more of a suspense/mystery novel rather than sci-fi. i see James Cromwell as the sub commander. economics, deceit, paranoia, loyalty, and betrayal!Herbert wrote a very strong story with characters that are flawed, couragous, and real.A hidden gem! -tough to put down.

Fantastic Submarine Adventure
This is a very exciting book that takes place in a not so distant future. The world is divided in two and they are a war.

Our side is stealing oil with submarines. And we have a sabuteur.

A Fine Idea - Now Let's Have One For 'Beauty and the Beast'!
I have browsed a copy of this book in an animation gallery and was impressed by the work within - certainly a marvellous way to explore the drawings that make up these films.

Let's hope Disney continue this series and quickly release Glen Keane's awesome character sketches and pencil development from 'Beauty and the Beast'! That is what I'm *really* waiting for!

Bambi
Bambi is a nice drama of real life. It states how life goes. It shows that sometimes you have to go on without your parents that they wont always be there. It also states that your friends & loved one's can be there to lean on & help you get on your feet again. If you're looking for a good book to explain life to kids then this is it. It is a good book to start conversations about life to little kids as well.

Disney's Sketchbooks - Great Resource for Artists!
This fine addition to the Disney Sketchbook series has many of the wonderful sketches done by Disney's animation department for Bambi, including many pieces from the storyboards, and several sketches of scenes that never made it into the final film. Artists that would like to study the Disney style of drawing and animation should find this volume a terrific addition to their collection despite its rather high price. As a student of art, and a fan of the Disney style, I highly recommend any of these books for your library.

Am I A Murderer?: Testament of a Jewish Ghetto Policeman

No, you were not a murderer
Calel, suffered deadfully with the most horrendous guilt imaginable when believing he was saving his wife and child from the Otwock Treblinka bound transport in being a "Jewish Policeman" and having certain "priveleges" with the SS who in fact condemned them to death, as at the last moment a reprieve was denied them. The book is invaluable as it was written during the Nazi occupation of Poland and Calel's description of an unseen Treblinka is very detailed, proving that the Jews of the time mainly knew of their fate. Personally speaking though his mother and father wouldn't have needed the Nazis to kill them as if it were my parents i'd have finished them off myself. What vile people they were, making me realise how unselfish my own family actually are. This is a must read for anyone with a "close knit" family, you wont be able to get your head around it. I hated them. I cannot believe the War had this effect on all people be they Jews or Gentiles and that these monsters were just off a minority or there is really no hope for family's of the future if this is to be the norm.

Author Was Forced to Choose Among the Lesser of Evils
Calel Perechodnik personally experienced very little anti-Semitism previous to the Nazi invasion of Poland. He and his wife had an opportunity to move to Palestine, but opted to remain in the country of their birth. The young engineer lived a low profile life in his hometown of Otwock, and expected the lives of Jews to only improve as the overall Polish culture turned more secular. Calel respected his Jewish traditions, but perceived himself as primarily a cosmopolitan man who took organized religion with a huge grain of salt. Everything, however, dramatically changed for the worse once the Nazis became the occupying power of Poland. The anti-Semitism of the Roman Catholic majority thereafter ceased being dormant and subtle, and many of these ordinary citizens became vile monsters. Virtually overnight they treated their Jewish friends and neighbors as akin to vermin requiring elimination.

The author attempts to save his wife and young daughter by becoming a ghetto policeman. The German Nazis cynically realized that Jewish men could best keep their fellow human beings under control. False hopes were conveyed to the Jews promising that their situation would be secure if only they cooperated. "Jews perished first of all because they didn't realize in time what level German cruelty and barbarism would reach," added the author. The 27 year old Perechodnik is forced to choose the less of evils. Ultimately, his family is not spared and the author is trapped in an environment where treachery, greed, and murder are the norm. Perechodnik's chronicle is not easy reading. It is a moral duty, and not in the least bit pleasurable. The reader will constantly be challenged to dwell upon the horrific choices of Perechodnik. The awkward question of how we would behave under similar circumstances is inevitable.

There are a few other books mandating your legitimate interest. Only a few months ago, the Holocaust scholar Jan T. Gross released his superb work "Neighbors" which deals with similar atrocities committed in the Polish town of Jedwabne. Peter Wyden's "Stella" published in 1992 concerns a young Jewish woman who for purely selfish reasons betrayed her friends to the Nazis. Only the very thin veneer of civilization separates us from barbarism. Thus, we are obligated not to ignore the unpleasant truths about the recorded depths of human depravity. Increasing our knowledge betters our chances of curtailing future horrors.

Important Document
When I read Perechodnik's book years ago, I was profoundly moved by the experiences of the writer in the war years. Having just travelled to Germany and seen some concentration camps, I started reading avidly on the Holocaust and the experiences of survivors and perpetrators. The poignant title of the book was the thing that caught my eye and it remains one of the most startling and powerful accounts of the evil that took place in WWII. It is amazing that this first-hand account survived and I wish it was as highly circulated and read as Anne Frank's diary. Perechodnik's account lets us into the sacrifces one has to make in extreme situations and the guilt he feels throughout the war for abandoning his wife and kid entreats us. A harrowing experience. Let us never forget the humanity in us.

My review
Book is very well written. Two complaints:

1) there are no illustrations. The pictures were all black and white and very old. I would have liked to see illustrations of baiting techniques like a start to finish illustration of rigging a dead eel. Also no mention or review of using clams as bait? Would have liked a more in depth review of casting techniques ect.

2) About half the book is old fisherman stories. While somewhat entertaining this is not what I bought the book for.

All in all it is a good book. Worth the money but not more than the current selling price.

A fantastic book with many uses-but not for beginners
I loved this book, and have read it several times. All the sections are appropriately done and are close to perfect. The major problem I had with the book, however, is its "Locating Striper's" section. This is because only a cursory look at locating stripers was taken, meanwhile, that is the most important aspect of Surf Fishing! Not as much cursory, but the basic principals such as "what is a tiderip/bar/back eddie/dropoff.exc." were not covered. I think pictures of such structures would have been helpful in locating these structures in real life.

Also, some of the sections on lures were vauge. I mean this not as if they weren't long enough, but simple things beginners would like to know such as retrieve speed of bucktails and plugs weren't covered extensively, meanwhile, these are the most important parts of lure fishing. In fact, all the retrieve speeds for lures were vauge, and, with the exception of the Eel section, the rigs needed for other types of bait fishing weren't covered well.

All in all, a great book, but Daignault shouldn't simply say, "Look for stripers in back eddies and behing bars", before explaining what they are and how to locate them. Pictures would help. Don't read until you know all the Vocabulary of Surf Casting and how to apply it. Then, It will be one of the best books you have ever read

A classic from the best saltwater writer since Hal Lyman!
I've saved just about every article Frank wrote for SWS. He has the ability, as a writer, to make you feel as if you are in waders next to him at the surf's edge. His best book, which offered insight into a family that lived to fish, is "Twenty Years on the Cape" (hard to find, but a great read). This book is great if you want to spend your time (mostly your nights) chasing Roccus from the shore. This is invaluable whether you are just starting out, or have been fishing for years. I'd recommend this to the legions of saltwater fly rodders as well. Frank spends less time on locations to fish, and more on understanding striped bass. Thanks, Frank!

Why Didn't You get Me Out?
Frank Anton's moving account of what happened to him in Vietnam is not only a POW's mightmare, but one for all of us Americans who left him there. I have been honored to meet Frank, in Florida, on our journey across America with our huey helicopter, while filming the documentary "In The Shadow of the Blade". His account of what our governement knew and didn't do, is shocking. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to get a full total picture and understanding of the Vietnam War experience. He has recorded a part of our history and a part of his very own soul! This is a must read book!

A New Angle? YES!!
"Why Didn't You Get Me Out?" should go hand in hand with George J. Veith's "Code Name Bright Light" in relating the appallingly hard-hearted and callous attitude the U.S. Government had towards the POWs and MIAs during the Indochina War. The more I read on the subject, two events take place: The first is that certain stories and key players keep reappearing (Jerry Mooney of NSA, General Tighe of DIA, Colonel Mike Peck, etc). The more they appear in the same form in different sources, the truer they must be. The second is that I find new information, such as the contents of Warrant Officer Anton's book. As WO Anton relates, the US had solid photographic intelligence of the locations of Viet Cong prison camps and often traced prisoner movements through the jungles all the way to Hanoi. WO Anton, in fact, is told years later that the US made no rescue attempts so as not to expose their sources!. Why develop sources if the information they provide goes unused? "Why Didn't You Get Me Out?" is unique in that most POW tales are set in the major Hanoi prisons such as The Plantation (Anton's last stop) or the infamous "Hanoi Hilton". Anton concentrates his focus on the putrid, festering smaller jungle camps he suffered through on the long trek from his capture in the Que Son Valley to the "relative comfort" of the Plantation. It's all here-the the dysentary, the skin leeches, the cruel guards(and some who were not), the attempts to reeducate/brainwash as well as the infamous Marine, Bobby Garwood, who colaborated with the enemy. Anton leaves no doubt as to the ultimate Vietnam?Indochina question" DID EVERYBODY COME HOME? Those of us who have followed things through the years know the answer is a resounding "NO!". "Why Didn't You Get Me Out" is recommended for any serious student of the Indochina War as well as those with a paticular interest in the fate of the 1.993 (as of October 23, 2000)MIAs still out there. After all these years and after spending one year of my life over there, it's just unreal how many sides there were to that War. This is a first rate new side/ new look. Those who have yet to read George Veith's book should try both.

Frank has written an outstanding book. Altough I firmly beleive that there are some of our guys that stayed in Nam by choice I am as convinced that there are many that were kept as pawns and our government didn't have the guts to go get them. Am very proud to have served in the military with men of the caliber of men like Frank. Thank you Frank for writting this book to let the people of our great country, just how gutless our Leaders were. Roadrunner 6 Out

Concise and Helpful
This book was very concise, helpful, and to-the-point about each topic in its content list. The items are (for the most part) helpful tips that are boiled down from more complex strategies for the games discussed. A few of the items are redundant and/or are just too common sense to be part of the numbered title. But most are appropriate, important, and well described. I would have liked more general detail on money management and casino details, but it's a good beginner's primer on many games and a good supplement to other more thorough books.

All Star Review
Walter Thomason who wrote the excellent "21st Century Blackjack" has assembled a who's who of gambling writers to give tips on all the games. The book works! Anyone interested in a quick-hit course in casino gaming will do well to buy this book. A very good job.

Good Reading on Gambling
Walter Thomason and other experts such as Frank Scoblete, Henry Tamburin, and John Grochowski have written a very good book. Each piece of advice is short and to the point. The book is very well designed and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a good grounding in most of the games.

This book is amature story telling
The basic storyline is somewhat compelling, but poor grammar and appauling punctuation make it impossible to read this book with any enjoyment. It was obviously published by an independent publisher because the font isn't even consistent throughout the book! I've seen student rough drafts more polished than this book.

Shattered Innocence
Wow-What a great book. Once started I could not put it down. It has it all. The story takes place in KY but it could be any where small town USA. The caricters were well defined and easily relatable.

couldn't put it down
This book was great! I couldn't put it down. The story line was so intriguing. The characters were well developed and true to real life.
