Edison - Creator of Industry
The invention of the first light bulb inaugurated a new age for man: Electricity. Just as Edison had to create the tools to make the first bulb, he had to create the industry to use it. He did, and in doing so he assembled the first research laboratory and gathered around him a collection of great minds -- a rich assortment of men with varying talents.

Wonderful teaching resource
To date, Roger's criticism of "Education from the neck up" (1951) has continued to be valid, and teacher's resource books have typically neglected the affective social aspects of learning. Here is a book that addresses both, presenting sample activities designed to encourage cognitive, affective and social growth in the classroom. I found this excellent for "humanising" language learning, and I found my students very receptive to these activities. I recommend this book to any teacher who is concerned with his/her students as human beings.

A must-have for Texas educators
Authors Frank Kemerer and Jim Walsh have written one of those "must-haves" that belongs in your professional library. If you are an educator in Texas, you need this book. Readable and thorough, the book touches all areas of concern, with emphasis on how the law applies in Texas. Kemerer is Regents Professor of Education Law and Administration at UNT and Walsh is senior partner in the Walsh, Anderson, Underwood, Schulze & Alderidge firm which has been heavily involved with districts across the state for some time now. This one is a needful reference, no matter what you level you teach.

It's really good!
Though the subject of this book may seem a bit daunting and even boring, I promise you that Frank Barlow has done a fabulous job. He has brought to life the enigmatic and somewhat obscure lives of the most important Englishmen of the late 11th century: Edward the Confessor, Earl Godwin, Edith Godwin's daughter, King Harold II, Swegn Godwinson, and Tostig Godwinson. A must-read.

The Egg of the Phoenix: Special Module I12 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons)
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (April, 1987)
Authors: Frank Mentzer and Paul Jaquays
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Great, rare reprint of Frank Mentzer's RPGA modules
By far the rarest module in the I series, this one is also the most coveted by collectors and DMs alike, because it is one of the best adventures ever written for the game. High praise, but I've run this one 6 times throughout the years, and every group hailed it as one of their favorites! The Holy Grail of AD&D, the Egg of the Phoenix is a magical artifact whose true powers have grown wilder over the centuries with every retelling. Now, the heroes (levels 5-9) will have months of adventure as this 100-page epic sweeps them through caravans, thievery, diabolical machinations, and a level 20 cleric/25 arch-mage who happens to have the four Elemental Princes of Evil on his case. Impossible? Only if you don't give your heart and soul, as a team, to survive... a wonderful tale, highest recommendation.

Out of Expressionism
Because he cared about how his art looked and because he accepted traditional ideas of what looked good on canvas, EGON SCHIELE remained outside of Expressionism. Expressionist influences nevertheless showed up in his bold graphics, distorted lines, and unnatural colors: "The artist's wife" wore a plain skirt covered with heavy impastoes, against a similarly treated background, by the emotionally charged, energetically treated brushwork style of Oskar Kokoschka; "View of Krumau" brought Georges Braque- and Pablo Picasso-type Cubism into the exaggeratedly high, unusual viewpoints to make a three-dimensional motif work on a two-dimensional Gustav Klimt-style decorative picture plane. They also had their role in his opinion of art as having to do with feelings, which he drew as abnormal or exaggerated in his self-portraits: "Self-portrait with black clay vase" gave him a double-jointed pair of hands in the manner of medievally represented saints, Paul Gauguin-style self-painted ceramic head, and a vulnerably, wide-eyed look. Expressionism played a part, too, in his pessimistic views: "The family" painted an unhappy trio looking in different directions against a brightly lit background as menacing as a spotlight; drooping "Sunflower" leaves hung dejectedly along a woody stalk; and with her Gustav Klimt-styled fine society lady's huge hat, "The scornful woman" showed an Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec-styled fish wife nude to the waist and sneering at a hurtful world. Author Frank Whitford has come up with a good set of illustrations and text. The author's book, along with his KLIMT, and Christopher Short's SHIELE give a good idea of the artist's place among Bernard Denvir's TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, Jose Maria Faerna's KOKOSCHKA, Hans Ludwig C Jaffe's PABLO PICASSO, Susanna Partsch's GUSTAV KLIMT, Belinda Thomson's GAUGUIN, and Karen Wilkin's GEORGES BRAQUE.

A classic biography of Einstein, deep and beautiful
Phillip Frank was the German professor who replaced Einstein when he left Prague for Berlin. Frank was a fine theoretical physicist and a very cultivated man. Afterwards, in America, he became a philosopher of science at Harvard, I believe. This book is not the most complete biography of Einstein, but I still think it is the most intelligent, and the most beautifully written. Having had many conversations with Einstein at the peak of his career, he offers wonderful portraits of both the early life of the genius and of his work. I lost the count of how many times I read this book!

A Great Way to Practice Spanish for an Oz Lover
My daughter is an OZ-junky. She got hooked as a little girl and has read every Oz book available. Now she is in 7th grade and has been taking Spanish in Middle School for 2 years. You can imagine what they read and how appealing it is to the typical student. Looking to see if there was anything new in the Land of Oz for a birthday present, I happened on this and the lightbulb went off - this is it! And it was it - she's had a great time reading this. It certainly helps that she knows the story intimately - but it has definitely helped with vocabulary-building.
