From the artistic to the highly technical, everything is here. Materials & processes as well as chemical compositions and practical formulae are accompanied by black & white photos and excellent diagrams.
A wealth of information is provided in an appendix of 42 tables, a bibliography, a list of suppliers and personal recipes from a number of artists. Historical styles and techniques are included as well.
Two sections of color plates include many varied and beautiful finished pieces with technical details and references to appropriate dictionary entries. This is definitely a classic in its field.
But all is not perfect...Not every word in the Talmud is translated however, this is a minor point, of which the author is well aware, and does not diminish this work at all. It derives from Melamed's Aramaic-Hebrew Dictionary and Jastrow, as well as a comprehensive Talmudic Concordance.
If students and scholars are serious about the Talmud then this companion is certainly a must-buy. Be sure to also get "Grammar for Gemara" by the same author - the second edition aids as much as the Dictionary does, and includes a brief section on Mishnaic Hebrew, and is interspersed with examples from the Aramaic Targums as well as the Aramaic of the Talmud haBavli.
If you're studying the Talmud, get both these books, they clarify meaning far more than Jastrow's Dictionary of the Talmud, Targums and Midrashim (which is a literal dictionary of all words).
There is a useful dictionary of common talmudic abbreviations at the end of the volume.

The focus is on the art with several large color illustrations per page. It is fantastic, bold & colorful, it's purpose being to generate excitement & sell books. The text gives a history of the pulps and their artists & writers.
Several themes predominate on the pulp covers. There are westerns, detectives, sports, war & jungle stories, aviation, risqué women & damsels in distress. This is also where some of the best early science fiction art is found.
There is a helpful section of information for collectors and all of the books illustrated are coded for relative value. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in popular art, Americana or collectibles.

Sherry does not write merely about piracy as seagoing theft, but about the short-lived and surprisingly democratic "Maritime Nation." Few people realize that the "Brethren of the Coast" (as they styled themselves) were one of the earliest "countries" - and certainly the only one of their age - to institute accident and disability insurance and elected leadership, not to mention equal opportunity employment and what essentially amounted to equal-share company stock options. Sherry does an expert job of illustrating the brutality and oppression of the age, making it clear why so many sailors voluntarily joined ranks with the seafaring rebels - whose primary battle cry was not "death to all," but "Will ye join us, Brother?"
Many myths are explored and deflated, and many others shown to have a great deal of validity. There is only one recorded instance of anyone being made to walk the plank, for instance, (even if the pirates played on that prevalent myth to their own advantage), though marooning was indeed the favored form of pirate capital punishment.
Most importantly, Sherry does a fine job of making the reader feel what daily life was like for the pirates - and for their suffering cousins in the merchant marines and the Royal Navy - and portrays them in a sympathetic and understanding light. He doesn't soft-pedal the darker side of piracy, but he does put it into perspective.
Equally recommended is David Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag," though Sherry's "Raiders and Rebels" is better organized and actually more thorough.
Reading each interview is as authentic and fascinating as watching an old home movie. Each person interviewed offers genuine incidents in which Hemingway's candid words and actions reveal the man in his many facets. All in all, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book, a must read for all Hemingway fans. And, as frosting on the cake, the book even has rare photos, some of which I have never before seen: photos of Hemingway and Gary Cooper; photos of Hem's boat, "The Pilar,"; photos of Hemingway with the Italian woman on whom he based his novel "Across the River and Into the Trees," etc. "Remembering Ernest Hemingway" is a wonderful glimpse of the elusive writer. I most highly recommend it.
