If ever a man was born for something...
An autobiography of a true warrior and hero told by the men who worked and fought alongside him. Coming off the family farm and joining the South African merchant marine at age 15, he was influenced to join the Royal Air Force in the 1930's. He not only accepted the challenges put before him, but distinguished himself as a tireless leader. Judging from the comments of his peers, he was hands-down the best shot among fighter pilots of his time.

A must if you want to have just one book on spaceflight!
This is a very enjoyable text covering the history and present day (up to mid-nineties) of the exploration of space. Unlike many personal accounts written by those who took part in these events, this book has an almost refreshing air of objectivity.

In well-divided chapters it features an overview of spaceflight (what are the necessary elements of a workable spacecraft?) and its early history (the great men of rocket theory and design).

It discusses close to all the launch vehicles and spacecraft that has ever flown, from Vostok to the Shuttle. All manned flights are listed. History of Moon exploration follows in a similar fashion. Planetary probes and satellites are discussed in the final chapter, together with visions for the future.

Both the Russian and American space programs are given a thorough and balanced overview, without any obvious bias either way.

The book has excellent drawings, diagrams and charts allowing those unfamiliar with the space jar! gon to understand how things work. Although sometimes oversimplified, these ensured that the message was clear. Photographs were plentiful but not overwhelming - there are other books more suitable for coffee table perusal pile.

As this text is fairly small in size (B5?) it is very handy to keep even on a cramped bookshelf. Having read a number of space exploration accounts, I thoroughly recommend this guidebook if you only want to have one resource text on spaceflight.

Sept. 6th, 1999 -- A GREAT Book !
I am three-quarters towards the end of this book, and I have found it fascinating from the start. Written matter-of-factly by the author and plaintiff in a milestone lawsuit against the FBI's policy of discriminating against those of "Alternative Sexualities" -- it is incredibly well written, and includes a lot of personal information concerning Frank Buttino's strong character. He is obviously a man of integridy - one who endured great personal sacrifices in order to serve his country and pretend to be something which he is not, for TWENTY YEARS. I have lived in New Orleans before, which is supposedly a Gay-Friendly area, and I have seen many examples of how people's civil rights are violated in this country over petty, superficial issues that have nothing to do with a person's ability and intelligence. Until then, I thought I was open-minded, now I know I am. I picked this book up at an overstocks store in NYC, and I cannot put it down. The author has been through an amazing personal, professional, and public struggle in order to keep his dignity. I for one salut him, and would recommend this book for all members of Government, Law Enforcement, and Journalists. The laymen can also get a small sense of what it is like to put your life on the line in order to help others, only to be banished for not being what the G-men want you to be. This is a compelling story. Read it and you will understand. The only drawback ? No photos !!

A Healing Modality
Thomas' book is an insightful look at the path to spiritual growth and development. He clearly articulates the nature of conflict within congregations (although his model is applicable to any organization) and provides critical thinking about how to address such conflicts in a way that is meaningful and courageous. I found his discussion about people who function as victims and saviors by doing a dance of immaturity to be very provocative. His call for principle-based leadership, while not new, is very refreshing in a congregational context and challenges those of us who have congregations centered around charismatic leadership to abandon our cults of personality.

This book will be most helpful to congregations that have not fully understood or articulated their mission, vision and values. It will provide a very capable framework and guidelines to begin those discussions so that ministry can go forth as a "healing modality" in our broken society.

Awesome for any age
I stumbled upon the "Strange" set of books by Frank Edwards as a kid in the midwest, and they made "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" seem quite tame. It contains hundreds of articles, from a paragraph to a page or two, recounting actual people, places and events having super normal or supernatural experiences. One in particular that is typical of this genre (and "haunts" me still) was about a family crypt where several of the occupant's caskets were tossed around numerous times with no sign of entry, and even later with posted guards. I've tried for years to be able to get a copy of one or more of these, for MY children and for myself. Please let me know if they go back into print.
