Great settings, characters, and Buckley's style = must read!
I am sure W.F.B.'s moniker as "the great conservative thinker" will repell many from this work, but the well developed characters, and romantic settings make for a good work of fiction regardless of your affiliations. This could be thought of as a thinking person's "Talented Mr. Ripley". Maybe not the most thought provoking read you will ever have, but I think it is one of the most entertaining.

An engrossing and entertaing novel
Like Buckley's other novels, plot, characterization and moral satisfy. Interesting historical perspectives. This is light fare and easy to read in one sitting

Enlightening coffee-table book
The book begins with a decent 5 page intro to the Buddha by Robert Thurman. There is nothing wrong with the intro, but one can tell he mainly studies Tibetan Buddhism -- there is a great emphasis on gods, heavens, divinity, and the like. The intro would have been better had it been representative of Buddhism as a whole.

The actually images of different Buddhas, which constitute most of the book, are extremely interesting, varying widely in style, media, composition, and even subject matter. (It is fascinating how many different forms of the Buddha have been created.) The differing Buddhas vary from serene to silly (such as Jim Crump's photo of the Putt Putt Buddha.) More famous Buddhas include those done by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Nam June Paik. Some images are awesome (as in inspiring awe), but a few just aren't very good.

This book won't do anything for a scholar of Buddhism -- there is nothing that tells what the Buddha's different positions, hand gestures, etc. are supposed to mean. But does contain some beautiful works of art, and in that respect it fulfills its purpose.

Great!!!!!
This book is great, with art for Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg to photos of the Loshan Buddha and a great photo of a Buddha surounded by skulls in Kampuchia.

Interesting and opinionated view of international business.
Here is a book that isn't afraid to be opinionated. The author provides a unique outlook on a variety of issues related to international business. The author has obviously "been there, done that" and he shares his insights with the reader.

Thorough and thoughtful - a treasure trove of information
If you are thinking of going global, as an organization or an individual, this is the book for you. Thorough and thoughtful, this book explores issues you will need to think through before taking the international plunge. Sensitive about cultural differences, the book addresses specific issues related to families and women in other areas. Very comprehensive in its approach to business and personal concerns, I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of doing business outside the U.S.

chemical oceanography
first i think that this one is avery good book, i review in master sciences in unam mexico, is agreat helpfull, but sometimes is confuse, have some text that are not so ease to understand, your book is one of the mas important in the chemical oceanography, and have to be more easy to learn, the first time that i read this book (the first edition) was in the basic sciences, and was very dificult to my undestand this new knowledge, but anyway i guiyou thakns for this book.

A valuable synthesis on marine chemistry: worth buying
This book contains a wealth of state-of-the art reference data, e.g. thermodynamic constants and other physico-chemical properties, which would otherwise be difficult to find together. It is therefore very useful as a source of data for quantitative calculations related to the chemistry of seawater.

PLUS: - detailed numbers - ion-pair and Pitzer models applied to seawater (explained with worked examples) - data on carbonate equilibria in seawater - chapter on circulation pattern - chapter on pH measurement of seawater

MINUS: - text style sometimes not concise - numbers frequently given without references - poor illustration quality

A Superficial Biography of a Deep Man
Driskill pays tribute to E.B. Potter's official biography of Admiral Nimitz in the credits section of his book. Unfortunately his shorter biography adds little of substance to Potter's. Potter shows his admiration for Nimitz by showing many small incidents of the man's humanity, tactical intelligence, and quiet perseverance that let the reader conclude on his own that Nimitz was a great man. Driskill tries to achieve the same goal in less space by glossing over details and just _telling_ readers that Nimitz was a great man. At several points he resorts to one of my pet peeves, narrative sentences ending in exclamation points. That is! Such a lame way! Of trying to make a story more dramatic! The best parts of Driskill's book are the passages where he talks about Nimitz's Texas boyhood and later visits to the state. There, he brings up vivid local detail that invokes the real Fredricksburg and surrounding Texas hill country. (The Museum of the Pacific War in Fredricksburg, built in the old Nimitz family hotel, is well worth a visit.) Driskill clearly had the best of intentions in writing this shorter account, but I'm afraid a reader would be better served by biting the bullet and launching into Potter's longer biography.

Superb Portrayal of Nimitz the Man and Admiral
Chester Nimitz, remembered most for his victories at Midway and the Central Pacific, is portrayed in a commendable fashion in this well-written and well-researched book. Beginning from his birth, the book discusses the development of the Admiral and the formation of his ideologies and ideals as he rose through the ranks to the top of the naval hierarchy, all of which is indispensable for the student who truly wishes to understand the command of the United States in the WWII Pacific Theatre. The portrayal of the admiral in both a personal and professional military light is superb, and one cannot help but be captivated by the truths presented in this book about the commander who has long been overshadowed by MacArthur despite the fact that Nimitz himself may deserve more credit for the American victory than his flambuoyant counterpart in the army. The relationship described in the book between these two is especially admirable, and Driskill does quite a job demonstrating how the Pacific Campaign was actually commanded.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in WWII reading or modern naval history as this book doesn't present Nimitz as a ficticious hero of the seas like Nelson or Jones, but rather as a modern hero in the modernizing navy who held in his disciplined character the key to allied victory in the Pacific.

Why are all the Conan's out-of-stock?
The original Lancer paperback was supposed to be the 2nd in an 8-part reissue of the Conan stories. All 3 stories are by Robert E. Howard; none are 'finished' by L. Sprague De Camp.

"Red Nails" is one of REH's best. Unlike the typical tale of the lost city, dying race and monster-menaced ingenue this tale gives us the tough female pirate Valeria, who I wish we saw more of (in a different sense from what Howard provides!)

"Jewels of Gwahlur" is more typical of the lost- city genre, with Conan breaking up an attempt to defraud an African kindom of its mystic gems and rescuing the girl at the same time.

"Beyond the Black River" is classic Conan, as the mercenary- barbarian fights the Picts on behalf of Aquilonian colonizers.

Great stuff!

One of the Best Conan novel's I've read
This is Robert E. Howard's best Conan novel, in my opinion. In one of the stories, Conan is forced to battle a prehistoric lizard, and outwits it rather than using "mighty thews" and "barbaric primal fury". Also, at the end of the same story, Conan is actually trapped for a while, and doesn't kill the main arch-enemy, but has to settle for eliminating the last bit of sword fodder. Overall, a good book.

nice introduction to the criminal justice field
i just bought this book at my campus the other day. I can't put it down. This book is very interesting and laid out nicely, definitions are made clear. i feel as if i am there when i look at the pictures in this book and when i am reading about a particular incident.another thing i like about this book is it combines traditional learning with the author wanting the reader to use the internet.

Informative
A good book to read if you're studying the subject, even if it isn't required.

Surely there is something better out there?
This book had some good points, but most of what was said didn't have much scriptual basis, just a lot of personal examples that I find questionable. One chapter in particular was very disappointing, the one about the stages leading up to being possesed. Read this book with a grain of salt...or two.

Very easy to understand and informative.
This book is great for those interested in this subject. Although it takes a mature Christian that has solid faith in order not to be turned off by such a deep and truthful view. I love this authors simplicity in writing about something that is not simplistic. This book was entertaining, informative and an overall good & quick read. I suggest you get it and check it out for yourself!

I picked this up at a used bookstore just because of the author. I think it must be for young adults. The writing was simplistic. I think the typeface was even larger than most books

Great introduction to science fiction!
Sharp art on cover draws one to this book. Good story and plot, certainly a great introduction to Frank Herbert's writing. Black and white drawings throughout this book are terrific and make it more interesting. I was impressed with this book for young people to enjoy.

Inexact, but sincere
Non-scholarly approach, obscures facts and makes unsupported assumptions.
Adequate as first person, unacademic approach to history of FLW

Making Wright right again.
This is the personal story of the author's architectural discoveries and insights after buying a spacious old house that turned out to be one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most liveable Prairie houses. She evokes the amazing ever-shifting quality of light and reflections, how its architectural forms guide furniture placement, the functions (and dusting) of woodwork and its thorough patterning throughout, why an overhanging roof is great, the eternally surprising views, the role of landscaping, and even explains how one lives in a bedroom without curtains. She does not reveal as much construction detail exposed during the restoration process as I had hoped, like electrical upgrading, the use of steel in the cantilevers, or exactly why Wright's roofs always leak. She discusses adapting the kitchen, and shows how her Tomek House is the prototype for the famous Robie house, and friendlier to boot by being less insistently exaggerated. The many illustrations emphasize the outcomes rather than the process of restoration. Moran is not a professional writer, and the text wanders a little, but she truly gave me a feel for how wonderfully right it would be to live in a house by Wright, or one designed by his modular procedure. Yet one also needs an artistic streak of one's own, lots of energy (and money), and patience for all the avid visitors who treat you as an unpaid guide and caterer. For building a Wright house, see Jacobs' Building With Wright; for living with one today, get Moran.
