Solid, lively basic introduction -- important reading!
This is a solid, basic introduction to a little-considered area of American history and contemporary life, the relationships among Native Americans and Black Americans. This is a solid piece of work, well researched and well written. Although the series is designed for younger readers, this work is intellectually respectable (and engaging) for adults interested in making an initial exploration of the topic. The author is breaking some relatively new ground in exploring the implications of race, color, and ethnicity (as well as social class) and the blending of races and ethnicities in contemporary culture. The format/design engages the eye, and the pictures are well-chosen and "worth a thousand words." I recommend it highly. (4 stars rather than five, only because it is a simple introduction, rather than a full-blown study.)

What we should all know
This book is a wealth of knowledge that explains the healthiest and best ways to combat and prevent all sorts of illnesses and problems. I have found it to be one of the best sources of useful tidbits in a long while. I am a very health concious person and this book has taught me more in just a few chapters than I had known previously

New Choral Notation/Wb500

Form's functions
The book fills a need that is not yet outdated--if we can ever standardize notation for vocal effects, this is the way to do it. Each symbol's entry is given a diagram, usage taken from existing literature, and a warning about its possible confusion with similar symbols. It is, like Stone's notation manual, a good way for beginning writers to clarify the special effects they want to exploit. Perhaps its best feature is that all its devices are taken from precedents set by earlier composers.

Good book.
This, along with Reichman's book, is one of the primary texts on soaring. It can be a little stuffy and academic at times (the authors are British, after all), but it's got lots of good technical stuff you'll have a tough time finding anywhere else. It's section on variometers and total energy compensation, for example, is the best I've seen (although it is a bit dated and doesn't cover modern electric instruments). Some color photos or illustrations would sure liven it up.

Poems for kids from 1 - 100 years old.
This is one of those books that come along once in a blue moon. It is filled with wonderful poems, full of humor, sensitivity, compassion, love and definitely exciting. "You have your Father's Eyes" is great fun and guaranteed to bring a laugh from anyone who hears it. This book is especially fun for Grandparents to read to their grandchildren. Don't know why it is out of print, but they should re-publish it.

Powerful and vivid, personal, and to the point.
This is the book that youth groups should mass order. Peretti recounts his own childhood growing up as a victim of both cystic hygroma (causing stunted growth and a speech impediment, among other problems) and bullying. He shares with painful detail how constant bullying effected his self-image ("I thought I was a monster") and how the school system typically does little or nothing to protect the weak. Even further, he illustrates his view of the world as governed by a higher system of rules, explaining why "Might makes right" is both a dangerous and a flawed philosophy. Peretti even confesses his own faults as an occasional bully, his failures to stick up for those weaker than himself. This is a super-quick read that will challenge adults to a new awareness of the bullying problem and will benefit every teen/pre-teen reader, whether he is a bully, a victim, or someone caught in the middle who doesn't know how to change "the way things are."

Respect and Fear in Alaska
I read this first hand account of the nature and individual personalities of the Alaskan Brown Bear as a young teenager, and it left an indelible mark on my ecological psyche. Mr. Dufresne's writing and stories are captivating, and you don't doubt for a moment the authenticity of each tale. My parents bought this book for my library, and I read it over and over (particularly the story about the 25th Bear). If you want to gain a new respect for non-humans as well as humans, don't miss this one!

October, 1973: The Arab-Israeli War
Published in Hardcover by Archon (December, 1991)
Authors: Frank Aker and George S. Patton
Amazon base price: $29.50
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

The military history of the Yom Kipper War, 1973.
Aker has a nice book about the military history of the Yom Kipper War. The perspective details why the war happened, what took place during the war, and the aftermath in a consise 135 pages with references. Since the war lasted only 18 days, I found this book about right in how to detail this war.
This book was written in 1985, so detailed sources from the Soviet archives were not available at the time. It also details the war more from an Israeli perspective rather that an Arab one, so it is slightly biased. Also, at times it was rather dry. However Aker does a brillant job of boiling down the war to the main points and the big picture. If one wants to know more about this war, then this is a good book to start with.

Of Poles and Zeros - Fundamentals of Digital Seismology
Published in Paperback by Kluwer Academic Publishers (15 May, 1996)
Author: Frank Scherbaum
Amazon base price: $136.00
Average review score:

Of Poles and Zeros
This is an excellent introduction to modern seismic measurement systems. Basically all what you need to know is covered here. Starting from functioning of seismometer, analog-to-digital techniques and digital filtering. All from the point of view of seismological interests, i.e. everything is all the time nicely linked with seismological practices which other "signal and systems" books obviously lack. Also the CD included is very educative when learning what poles and zeros actually mean.

Pictures could be a bit better from time to time. It seems that straight window-captures have been used when some further image processing would have been required.

Nevertheless, this is a must for any seismologist dealing with measuring systems.
