Well written description of Wright's building
Don Hoffman's book gives and accurate description of how this magnificent home came into being from its inception to completion. It discusses how the sketches evolved due to the environmental considerations of the landscape showing how Kentuck Knob was build to coordinate the house and the hill upon which it was built into one organic structure.

It explains Wright's architectural philosophy as to why he makes the decisions he did when building this house.

Visually the book itself is elegantly designed with excellent photographs giving a true feel for the nature of the house and providing some insignt to the wise, artistically minded people whom conceived of and lived in Kentuck Knob so happily and with such a great respect for the environment which the house occupies.

As a child I spent a great deal of time in this house, being close family friends with the original owners, so I would know if there were any inconsistancies with the book and reality and find it most accurately written.

This would be a great gift for anyone interested in architecture, environmnetalism or whom is a particular fan of Frank Llyod Wright's architecture. Also it is so beautifully done that it would just be a pretty coffee table book to keep for yourself or for in a guest room.

The lost Wright revealed!
"Frank Lloyd Wright's Lost Buildings," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" dedicated to the work of this legendary architect. In this one, Lind notes that "about one hundred of [his] buildings--one of every five built--have been destroyed" for various reasons. This book celebrates the legacy of these lost treasures.

The book combines Lind's concise but informative text with a wealth of historic black-and-white photographs. In addition, the book contains full color photos of preserved portions of these lost buildings. There are also interesting sidebar quotes from Wright and others, as well as a bibliography.

Both public buildings and private homes are covered in "Lost Buildings." Structures pictured in the book include the Larkin Administration Building in Buffalo, New York; the Lake Mendota Boathouse in Madison, Wisconsin; and the Husser House in Chicago, Illinois. Each structure is celebrated with a short history and with photographs.

This book, despite its small size, effectively pays tribute to a fascinating body of Wright's work. For those interested in Wright, this mini-book may make a perfect gift.

The public Wright
"Frank Lloyd Wright's Public Buildings," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of mini-books dedicated to Wright's amazing achievements as an architect. This volume contains the features that generally characterize the series as a whole: Lind's concise text, many excellent full-color photographs of both building interiors and exteriors, interesting sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a brief but informative bibliography.

This book profiles many of Wright's most noteworthy public buildings: the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois; the Johnson Wax Building in Racine, Wisconsin; Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania; the Guggenheim Museum in New York City; and more.

The many photographs effectively capture the beauty and revolutionary boldness of Wright's architectural vocabulary. The buildings range from structures that look like Mayan temples, to structures that look like extraterrestrial spaceships, to structures that mirror forms from the natural world. Read the book and appreciate the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Wright house for the rest of us!
This is a beautiful short introduction to the late and often smaller houses built by Wright after 1935, appropriately published in a purse-size book (part of a series). While less well known than his Prairie houses, these Usonians are the houses that YOU and I could afford! (Well...the smallest gem, Goetsch--built for $7,137.23--just sold for c.$225,000.) You will see here the beginning of many cliches of "modern houses:" single storys, open plans, lots of glass, dinettes, carports, etc. Only, these look beautiful! Why? Some idea of the awesome power of integrated design, inside and out, even at a tiny scale, is given in the small pictures of rich color. No "interior decoration" for Wright! Carla Lind is an extraordinarily evocative writer on Wright, and distills deep aesthetic insights into a brief focused text. If you like the magic you see here, then be sure to get Sargeant's book (Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses) to understand how these are designed and built (or seek Susan J. Bandes, Affordable Dreams. Kresge Art Museum Bulletin 6. Michigan State University. 1991). Enjoy.

Not only can one read about some of Mr. Wright's many idiosyncrasies about such things as religion, science, music, ethics and morality, to name just a few, the book comes with 2 cassette tapes that allow you to actually HEAR selections from Sunday talks to his apprentices.

This book is a "must hear" for all Wright lovers who want to know why he was such a great architect as well as a brilliant speaker.

good insight into their buildings
In this book, noted architectural scholar Donald Hoffman outlines the contributions of these two men and others to the fledgling skyscraper movement. Among the topics examined are the profit motive behind skyscraper construction, the importance of light in skyscraper design, Sullivan's soaring idealism, the "anti-skyscraper," exemplified by Wright's Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and many more.

Accompanying the perceptive, carefully researched text are 100 excellent illustrations, including rare photographs, floor plans, and renderings that document such important structures as Sullivan's Wainwright Building in St. Louis, along with his Masonic Temple, Reliance Building, and Marshall Field Wholesale Store in Chicago; the A.T. Stewart store in New York; the San Francisco Call Project; Wright's Larkin Building in Buffalo, New York, as well as his dazzling but never-constructed National Life Insurance Company project, Chicago, and St. Mark's Tower project, New York.

Architecture enthusiasts will find this comprehensive, authoritative study filled not only with an abundance of insights into the early development of the skyscraper but also with the ideas and influence of two master builders who played key roles in one of the most revolutionary developments in modern architecture.

The Frank Lloyd Wright you don't know about
This book provides a new perspective on Wright -- who knew he designed a civic and arts complex for Baghdad, Iraq (it was never built)? Or that Fallingwater influenced the design of a wealthy suburb of Mexico City (El Pedregal)? If you think you're tired of Wright and all the Prairie Style images associated with him, read this book and get a fresh take.

Excellent introduction to the life and architecture of FLLW
Mr. Nash's book is full of wonderful color photographs and an in depth chronicle of events in Frank Lloyd Wrights(FLLW) life. The book describes the hardships Wright endured, how he got his start, his turbulent and tragic personal life, his bold architectural philosophy, his defiance of contemorary styles, and much more. Anyone interested in FLLW should take a look at this book. It offers both a great starting point for those interested in learning about the architect and a great reference for those who already know about him.
