This book leads the reader from the known to the to-be-known
Successful management today does not consist in re-creating the conditions under which we thrived in the past -- a past even greater than the Atlantean one! To create success for oneself, one's organisation, community or nation, one needs to identify the primary forces that work in today's turbulent environment: the drivers of change in the private and public market place as well as within the workplaces. That, precisely, is what After Atlantis is about.

In a sense, After Atlantis has not invented anything new. It is not old wine in a new bottle, either. The book leads the reader from the known to the to-be-known: Acknowledging and re-establishing the well-known fact that no one off-the-shelf solution can meet the challenges of organisations today, the authors seem to have succeeded in extracting a synergistic approach from the various disparate approaches that most of us are already familiar with. The book, however, does not (and it does not want to) offer a fish, but provides the wherewithal to fish in troubled waters.

Starting with a clarification of the meaning of turbulence, After Atlantis proceeds to identify the basic drivers of change and turbulence and show how to set about managing them through the four phases of discontinuous innovation, continuous improvement, breakthrough improvement and another discontinuous innovation. These phases are dealt with in good detail.

The recommendations of After Atlantis (for working, managing and leading in turbulent times) are extracted from the authors' own research of field-tested practices, which are well recounted in the book. The extracted process has been christened as The Shared Learning Process, which subsumes the approaches of Search Conference, Participative Design and TQM.

Besides presenting a concise and practice-based process, the book also provides a tested architecture with which one can understand how to launch and sustain a quality management and continuous improvement process in an organisation. The logic of where, when and how to start is a specialty of this even otherwise special book.

The editors say
"Our anthology is exclusively Asian American. That means Filipino, Chinese, and Japanese Americans, American born and raised, who got their China and Japan from the radio, off the silver screen, from television, out of comic books, from the pushers of white American culture that pictured the yellow man as something that when wounded, sad, or angry, or swearing, or wondering whined, shouted, or screamed "aiiieeeee!" Asian America, so long ignored and forcibly excluded from creative participation in American culture, is wounded, sad, angry, swearing, and wondering, and this is his AIIIEEEEE!!! It is more than a whine, shout, or scream. It is fifty years of our whole voice."

Finally, an anthology of Asian Americans who've stayed unassimilated in a white supremacist society. Thus angering white men (like Earl Derr Biggers and Sax Rohmer) to denigrate Asians into gross depictions like Charlie Chan, Fu Manchu, Suzie Wong, etc. Much debate and controversy came from this book, which should cause you to buy it. Some Asians who have sold out to the stereotypes (Asians like Leong Gor Yun, C.Y. Lee, Yung Wing, Lin Yutang, Calvin Lee, Betty Lee Sung) are doing everything they can to keep this book from being purchased (see my review of the June 1974 Aiiieeeee! edition). Funny, it seems that has done nothing more but up the sales of this important book. In failing to do so, these same Asians have tried to ruin the reputation of these editors. Either way, this book stands strong and unrefuted.

From a student of the author
I got to help test-drive this textbook's material by being in a course taught by Dr. Lyons' as the book was being published, and let me tell you, this book is chock full of information about air & gas drilling. The detail is amazing, giving step-by-step examples in calculating flowrates of various drilling methods, such as aerated and foam drilling. Graphs are provided for different flowrates with all the major industry-standard drill pipes, and other helpful graphs such as geothermal gradient, surface temperature and pressure.

I took the course using this textbook as part of a Petroleum Engineering curriculum. However, this book applies to a multitude of other industries, because of environmentally-friendly and economic nature. It'll cover all the basics for you. Don't know what kinds of air compressors are out there, and how they work? Need to know the different kinds of drilling platforms are in use? Don't know the difference between direct and reverse circulation? This book has got you covered. Air and gas drilling is the next big thing in rotary drilling.

Not your everyday parachute adventure.
Buckley at his most relaxed. The book chronicles a trans-atlantic crossing under sail, starting with insuring that the ship is seaworthy, through picking the crew and plotting the course to the "mundane" aspects of a sea advdnture. Along the way one has the rare chance to observe a crew interacting spontaneously. The use of the ship's log to aid in the revealing the details and even the thoughts of some of the shipmates make the story all the more enjoyable. By journey's end you feel like you know what it must be like to cross the mighty Atlantic under the power of sail. A surprisingly enjoyable read as you and Buckley glide towards Europe.
