Valuable eyewitness account of the 2nd Seminole War.
Not since Dr. Motte's "Journey Into Wilderness" have we had such a valuable eyewitness account of the 2nd Seminole War. Lt. Henry Prince was in the 4th Artillery, and saw some of the major actions of the war. He was at Camp Izard with General Gaines in early 1836. Although we have plenty accounts of that action, Prince gives a lot of details that are not mentioned in other accouts, like Seminoles dressed in soldier uniforms to trick the soldiers. He also gives more details on Col Parish's shooting of Lt. Ward at Fort King, and gives a very different view than what is written in "The Army & Navy Chronicles." Prince is a West Point graduate and officer in the field, and has a very different perspective that Dr. Motte's "Journey Into Wilderness." The Prince diary came to us by an interesting set of circumstances. It was a loose collection of papers found in an attic trunk up north. The owners brought it down to the Dade Battlefield wondering if it was of any value. Unfortunately it took 20 years from that time until finally getting published. The sale of the diary to the Florida collection at the University of Florida was negotiated, and Prince's handwritten notes were transcribed and edited for publication. The published book includes Prince's interesting sketches as well. Prince's diary was invaluable for finding Powell's Town on the Withlacoochee River. (Osceola's hideout during the war.) An interesting archaeological survey was done and can be found in Brent Weisman's book, "Like Beads on a String." (Out of print, but found in many used book stores in Florida.) I would say the one of the big drawbacks of the diary is that it is left much as Prince wrote it. Although this captures the flavor of an officer scribbling notes in the field, even Laumer's footnotes will help little if the reader is unfamiliar with some of the military terms and abbreviations. Without knowledge of some of the duties and details of the Army, you may get confused. Also, Prince's handwriting must have been difficult to read, because of some confusion of names and words. There is a Col. Wanch mentioned, when it is most likely Col. Warren of the Florida Militia. But overall, Frank Laumer has done an invaluable service by making this available to researchers and historians of the Florida War. --Okahumpkee

Manley chronicles the lives of the lost is these stories
From mail-order Asian brides to half-naked priests, Frank Manley's vision of contemporary America extends far beyond the boundaries of tradition. In "Among Prisoners," a collection of short stories, Manley's characters are reflections of humor and solemnity, confusion and understanding. Trapped within an irrational world, these characters transcend the standard roles of heroes and heroines. Mary, the housekeeper, struggles to hold onto her newfound happiness, all the while knowing that it may vanish within a brief moment. Mr. Butterfly, an army veteran, repeatedly marries women who can barely speak his language, and is either too cheap or simply too unlucky to divorce them. Margaret Winchell, a lonely widow, seeks to rediscover her girlhood home, opting to bury herself in the past rather than embrace an indefinite future. And following a battle of wills on the courthouse roof, a determined prisoner finds freedom in the face of condemnation. Not all of the characters are likable, and some are downright bizarre. However, Manley deftly structures the stories in such a way that the reader cannot help feeling a certain empathy toward these lost people. One feels almost voyeuristic, as though the conversations in the book were never meant to go beyond the rocking chairs or the worn seats of the municipal bus where they are taking place. Manley's tactics work; the dialogue is comedic in parts, serious in others, and is largely intriguing. "Among Prisoners" is a fast read, but not necessarily an easy one. Not overly concerned with mapping the futures of his characters, Manley leaves much to the imagination. He has created these people he does not claim to fully understand them, and many questions slip by unanswered. Yet this elusiveness is what gives the stories their unconventional appeal, and illuminates Manley's appreciation of the complexities of human nature.

fun book
My son and I greatly enjoyed this book. It is presented in the typical, and attractive, Eyewitness style, and is packed with information and pictures. I especially enjoyed reading about ancient amphibians. I had no idea that they grew so large in ancient times!

Why the dunk was outlawed
This is the best book available on the monumental historic 1966 NCAA men's basketball championship of Texas Western, the first team to start 5 blacks in the Final Four. It is very well researched, with an extensive bibliography. The civil rights impact is well dealt with, as are the racial attitudes of several of the major players. The Kentucky coach, Adolph Rupp, is treated fairly and the reader is left to make his own decision about his character. This is tricky to handle, because his attitudes had to be presented on a backdrop of his times and environment.

I have two minor criticisms of the book, which prevent me from awarding it 5 stars. The first is that the racial attitudes of Don Haskins, the Texas Western coach, were not clearly portrayed. We are left with the impression that he cared about the game more than anything, and we know that he was a little bit country, but we never really find out whether he harbored any prejudices.

Second, while the race issue is well dealt with by Fitzpatrick, he does not deal in depth with the problem with gentlemen's agreements. This refers, for example, to the rule of thumb "2 at home, 3 on the road, 4 when behind" that apparently many coaches used to define their quota for black players. A discussion of this, including who knew about these agreements and how widespread was their impact, would definitely have been in order in this book which is trying to place that basketball game in its spot in history.

And then they came for me
I personally loved this show. i am the video operator for a production of this show at the Laguna playhouse and it has been a wonderful expirence. It is a different kind of theater part of the story being told through video interviews with the two main character Ed and Eva. Eva was one of anne's friends and her mother married otto frank after the war. Ed was anne frank's first boyfriend and their story is told through a seires of viedo interview and live reenactment and their expirences . I highly recommend this play.

Anne Frank: A Portrait in Courage
Anne Frank: A Portrait in Courage written by Ernst Schnabel is a wonderful story about the Holocaust in the view of 42 witnesses that knew Anne. Through Anne Frank's dreams, diary entries, friends, school, across borders, and through much time, the author finally ends at the death of Anne. This book is not a biography on Anne Frank, for she only left a small trail of character behind for people to discover, but it is rather a book on how she lived. Using these 42 testimonies, we find out how hard it was for the Jewish people to live during these terrible times. This book is a delightful experience for anyone who loves children, courage, freedom, or humanity. This book is anything more than a simple child's diary.

another breath taking book for such an intimate topic
This is another book about Anne Frank that I get the chance to read. Although there are many biographies about this wonderful human being, this book is the closest one that can answer the questions that all Anne Frank fan has. I did for many years just read the Diary over and over but I wanted more! This book is definetly more! It tells you more about the relationship she had with her family and the rest of the people in hiding. This is a girl who could hardly see the light coming from her window and the only green thing that she could think about was a huge chestnut outside the Annex. This book describes this little things that she cherished and that she no longer had....her freedom. She didn't either had freedom of speach inside the Annex due to the critics about her attitude. This book develops more information about why Anne acted like she did and why she had an open opinion about everything. It also gives you a bigger idea of why she didn't like her mother and develops more about her childhood around her family and her friends. I hope all readers that enjoy the Anne Frank writings will enjoy this description about her persona. Is a total different thing to read her diary knowing more about her life and early aspirations. ENJOY!
