Good Type Casting
"Bad break" is one of the many keywords alphabetically arranged with diagrams and examples in THE TYPENCYCLOPEDIA: A USER'S GUIDE TO BETTER TYPOGRAPHY. Frank J. Romano also includes math symbols and proof marks and ends with current typeface names crosslisted to other manufacturers' designs and with a full index of terms. He gives a mission statement for typography as readable text with consistent word spacing, frequent paragraphs, narrower line lengths and well-designed typefaces on a page with enough white space for non-type gutters, leading, margins, and space around heads and illustrations.

The author throws in good typographical small talk, such as letting us know that Aldus Manutius was one of the first printers to punctuate text. He puts in humorous comments, too, such as saying that the art department is low on work when graphic designers put together character or word pictures to create, for example, that famous image of President Lincoln's face. Finally, he sets good typographic standards, such as avoiding back slanting type because it goes against reading flow; making quotes a size smaller than text; restricting vertical setting to a short line with otherwise horizontal type and vertical stacking to printing down book backbones; and using evocative typography and special effects in moderation. All this and more make for easy reviewing of typography as well as good reading along with Lewis Blackwell's TWENTIETH CENTURY TYPE REMIX, Robert Bringhurst's THE ELEMENTS OF TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE, and Jan Tschichold's TREASURY OF ALPHABETS AND LETTERING.

The U.S. War Crimes Trial Program in Germany, 1946-1955: (Contributions in Military Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (March, 1989)
Author: Frank M. Buscher
Amazon base price: $62.95

The essential treatise on the subject
Despite its lack-luster and uninspiring title, Buscher's book is the definitive work on the subject of the United States' trial and subsequent release of war criminals in the trials which took place after Nuremburg. He does a good job detailing West German efforts to secure the release of these "so-called war criminals" (as they referred to them) and the motives which underlay them. It is an unfortunately and undeservedly neglected work, far superior in its research, depth, and scope of understantding to it's oft-mentioned British counterpart, Bower's "Blind Eye to Murder." vf

Very Inciteful, refreshing and informative
Biblical prophecy is something I study on a daily basis, as it is my favorite passtime. I have read many books on prophecy from some of the best authors out there. I have to say, though, that Mr. Caw has written something new and refreshing; it is a very well written book which is easy to understand. He touched on things that I have not considered before, thus, I think every believer owes it to themselves to read this wonderful book.

A Lasting Impression on our state of being
I read this book over a year ago, and the impression has lasted. I find myself reviewing Frank's work on beliefs that cause the unbearable wrongness of being. Frank has has tremondous impact on my happiness. Because of his teachings I have been able to overcome some fears that caused a lot of unecessary worry around the subject of evil and good. This is a must read! To your success, Michael Bolduc author of Power of Motivation.

Uncle Frank's Pit...Great Fun!
Uncle Frank's Pit is one of those books that you just can't keep to yourself! After I finished it, I had to share it with my family and friends....then they ran out and bought their own copies! (Honest!)

The story is told from a young boy's point of view. When Uncle Frank shows up one day, he overstays his welcome. Why is he there? What is he looking for? When the boy and his family finally find out, everyone is in for a surprise...and I mean everyone!

Matthew McElligott combines clever and colorful illustrations with a "what-will-he-do-next" storyline. The little details hidden in the background of his illustrations made me laugh out loud! But don't believe me; read it for yourself!

A Rollicking Romp in Pizza Land
In chapter headings the author has apparently adopted Fielding's chapter headings as a model for this Italian American Tom Jones feeling his oats in and about Naples. These headings may give you a tantalizing peek at a series of events in a picaresque manner both amorous, and gustatory, which embroil a youthful mid-weaterner.Imagine someone on a mission to sell franchise pizza to the people of Naples! There is much food interest and dalliance. An American MBA fielding the attempt on behalf of the Perfetto Pizza Co,USA screws up matters. Mark Vitelli is buffeted
by the advances of lusty women and a suspected pythoness. How could he retain his virginity when the octopus peddler seduces him on the isle where Sirens were reputed to entice young men.Poor Mark!In the end a shipload of frozen pizza is scorched by the scirocco, billows into a yeasty tidal wave which almost engulfs the parting ship., On board with the MBA, Mark signals a farewell kiss to bella Napoli.Addio! Bello!

The Undercliff : a sketchbook of the Axmouth - Lyme Regis Nature Reserve

The undercliff never looked better!
I had received this book as a present in 1992 when I lived in Lyme Regis full-time, and took this marvelous guide with me on my travels in and around the Undercliff. Mrs Franks has obviously spent much quality time studying the flora and fauna of this precious ecosystem and with her talented pencils has reproduced her vision of that world in a beautiful and just manner (butterflies with tattered wings, etc). I can't say (write) enough about this reference - except that if one views it solely as a reference book then half the fun and excitement laying wait within its pages will be sorely missed.
Three cheers to the author/illustrator, Elaine Franks -

Understanding Abstract Art
Published in Hardcover by Penguin USA (October, 1987)
Author: Frank Whitford
Amazon base price: $12.98
Average review score:

Simple, Clear Language Explains Abstract Art to Us Outsiders
Many art lovers have no entry point to abstract modern art. It is bad enough to see a canvas filled with rising black lady fingers, or crowded with primary color matchsticks which look as if a child had drawn them. Even worse, if a huge, plain white canvas, or a black one, or a purple one is put in a frame, hung in a museum, and sold for thousands of dollars, we have no idea why. Frank Whitford finds a simple path through history, and through the evolving types of abstract art, to lead us by the hand into the thicket, show us what is going on in there and what it means, and bring us safely to the other side, educated and ready to go look at some pictures - more importantly, ready to look at the abstract pictures with new appreciation and understanding.

Whitford uses traditional pictures we all appreciate and understand to provide a strong starting point for the journey into the abstract.

Whitford's writing style is at once clear, erudite, educated, not without humor and irony, and always entertaining. He is never cynical or sarcastic, no matter how much this subject would seem to set up easy targets. Abstract art is serious business for those in the know, and this book gives us lay readers a chance to count ourselves in that group.

It performs a valuable service.

This book is very enlightening in lots of issues concerning Sociology. From the new theories to the criticism of the classical. From the classical problems in sociology to new ones, such as the Web, the body or the individualism in our society. It is also a good handbook. It can be used almost as a reference book.
