Language And Deed.Rediscovering Politics through Heidegger's Encounter with German Idealism. (Elementa 71)
Published in Paperback by Rodopi Bv Editions (January, 1998)
Author: Frank Schalow
Amazon base price: $44.00
Used price: $22.00

Important contribution to Heideggerian political philosophy
Schalow's book explores the relationship between Heidegger and German idealism and introduces the distinct approaches of Hegel and Heidegger as a basis for developing a new basis for today's politics. Using Heidegger's concept of Gelassenheit and his critique of totalizing and systematizing, Schalow develops a Heideggerian critique of Heidegger's involvement with National Socialism, and then uses the positive results of Heidegger's conversation with German idealism to re-structure the philosophical conception of political ideas such as free speech and civil disobedience. The possibility of a new basis for these concepts is found by investigating the "unsaid" in Heidegger's thought, just as Heidegger himself "appropriates the tradition by engaging his predecessors and eliciting what remains 'unsaid' in their philosophies through a 'thoughtful conversation.'" (181)

This method is itself grounded in Heidegger's concept of Dasein, which reveals itself in the other only by being attentive to the other and allowing the other its (her / his) own voice. Schalow's careful analysis shows how in Heidegger's thought the individual accomplishes an authentic discourse through a linguistic openness with others, an openness in which one listens to that which is most other. Inauthentic discourse, trapped in everyday conventions, is closed off to the possibilities of discovering new meanings through listening to what is not conventionally heard. A Heideggerian "social conscience" emerges, then, with the responsibility to preserve the role of language as authentic discourse in listening for the possibilities of new meanings outside of everyday conventions (das Man).

The result is a very different philosophical understanding of concepts in the liberal tradition. A free discourse is not merely characterized negatively as not being restricted in one's freedom to speak, but the positive aspect, hearing and being heard, is now emphasized. Freedom is now understood as freedom from convention, a freedom which must remain open to the voice of the other. Tradition is now a thoughtful listening to and appropriation of the past, by means of which established social convention may be critiqued and rejected.

In today's world, where free speech itself has become a conventional watchword (but maybe for that very reason not understood), a Heideggerian critique as suggested by Schalow could bring us to rethink the essence of our political notions. In going beyond historical interpretation and contributing to today's philosophical issues, this book should be of interest beyond the realm of Heidegger specialists.

A truly eye-opening discussion of what the future holds
If you want to stay locked into the old, narrow-minded, industrial age thinking, then don't read this book. If, however, you want a fresh perspective on what can (and probably will) happen in the near future, then this is the book for you. Sometimes controversial, always inspiring, this book will show you the possibilities when you look toward the newly emerging technology for the answers.

The Law and the New Testament: The Question of Continuity (Companions to the New Testament)

Discontinuity or continuity?
Thielman delivers again! Moving away from simply a discussion of Paul's view of the Mosaic law (which has tended to dominate recent discussions), Thielman turns to look at what the rest of the NT has to say on this issue. He again showcases his impressive ability to explain difficult concepts and trace complex arguments with seeming ease. Matthew, John, Luke-Acts, Romans/Galatians and Hebrews are covered. The title chapters by themselves give helpful clues as to how exactly Thielman sees the function of each chapter toward the question of interest: What level of continuity is there with the Mosaic Law now that the eschatological event of the death and resurrection of Christ has broken into history? Thielman finds both continuity and discontinuity, but (rightly in my opinion) concludes that the stress is laid on the discontinuity. For an overview of the NT's view of the law, and not just Paul's, this short book should be one of the first places to turn.

A classic of strange lands and people through a childs eye.
This book is probably one of my all time favorite reads. It's a classic in France and read mainly by younger adults/children. The story is seen from a young boys point of view and encompasses all the delights of a fairytale, from secret countryside and villages to strange travelling people and magic and romance. It is a must for anyone who like myself, dreams of forgotten hours of childhood wandering aimlessly in strange places and forgetting where you are.

A great chronicle!
This book is a wonderful chronicle of the men who played for Frank Leahy and the impact that he had upon them as they progressed beyond Notre Dame. My grandfather played fullback for Leahy and I had him sign copies for my kids as a lasting momento of the experience he had while playing at Notre Dame.
