Frost is the rare storyteller who can paint a vivid picture, make his reader chuckle knowingly or laugh out loud, cringe at a sudden moment of terrible reality, and then keep one thinking again and again about the characters and their plights. This book is an outstanding work in the very best tradition of the American short story.
Frost is a well-known historian of the ancient world who has published many scholarly books and numerous articles, especially with regard to Classical Greek history and archaeology. In the last few years, he has added fiction writing to his Curriculum Vitae with his 1999 novel Dead Philadelphians. In Subversives, he flexes his abilities with the genre of the short story.
I enjoyed all 13 immensely. My favorite of all, though, had to be "The Frampton County Drunk Driving Project" where a Frostean protagonist accepts what turns out to be a peculiar blend of summary punishment from an attractive female sheriff for his slightly elevated blood alcohol level--a plot that would be a natural as the plot for a drive-in movie.

"Tales" is a wonderful, even miraculous, story of a white boy, Mayfield, who lived with the Indians in the Central Valley of California in the early 1850's. After returning to white society he faced such prejudice that he suppressed his Indian background. Frank Latta, miraculously recorded Mayfield's story just before he died at age 86.
A great record of early California; life among the Indians and race relations.
Uncle Jeff was born about 1843 and his family immigrated to California to join the gold rush. He began living with the local Choinumne tribe after the death of his mother in 1850, when he was eight years old, until 1862. When he first went to live with the natives, their contact with whites was sporadic and their lives much as they had always been. But by 1862, what had been a tribe numbering more than three hundred people had dwindled to less than forty due to the ravages of tuberculosis and measles, as well as a lack of food and other natural resources caused by white settlement. His intimate and detailed recollections of Choinumne ways are fascinating. Mayfield describes a very happy people who make good and respectful use of all the natural resources at their disposal. Sections devoted to hunting and fishing, food ways, childcare, rituals and housing are very richly visualized.
His later stories about life in the town of Tailholt and its environs are very engaging, as are the letters from others verifying or elaborating on his recollections. The people and events recounted in the book represent a great cross section of pioneer life.
We are fortunate that Frank F. Latta was able to capture Thomas Jefferson Mayfield's first hand account of his life. The first person writing style makes the book easy to read. It is a valuable resource on the life of the Yokuts and of the early settlers of the San Joaquin Valley. Sections of the book including the letters from others concurring with Uncle Jeff's stories would make excellent first person quotes for exhibits or school study even at the elementary level.
Anyone interested in early California settlement, Native ways, or the geography, flora or fauna of the San Joaquin Valley during the second half of the nineteenth century will enjoy this historic volume.
The new dust jacket for the book was painted by the late Ben Barker of Susanville California as a mock-up for a mural in Exeter, California. Exeter, known for its murals and antique shops, is 10 miles east of Visalia, in Tulare County, It sits below Sequoia National Park, on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, in the land of Yokuts.
The Yokuts Harvest Mural in Exeter, California, portrays the agrarian lifestyle of the local Yokuts Indians collecting and cooking sour berries during a summer day. The mural is set in the huge oak forest that once covered hundreds of square miles of the San Joaquin Valley.

Unfortunately the book only covers the stars up to the mid 90's when the book was reissued so it is lacking in that area. However, you will still want it for it's sharp and highly original commentary on each of the individual episodes; the authors truly love the show and spared nothing to bring every fact and piece of trivia associated with each to the surface. Don't misunderstand me, there isn't any malicious gossip or an overabundance of unnecessary details; what's presented here is a rich and rewarding history of one of the best shows to ever air on TV. All of the cast members, the shows creator James L. Brooks, the trio of producers and many others connected with 'Taxi' are all interviewed; also included is a terrific recounting of how the famous theme song by Bob James came into being. This is just a simply wonderful book that any 'Taxi' fan must and should have; for TV trivia and history buffs it's also one of the best studies of it's kind available and I highly recommend to them as well. It's a book that can be enjoyed over and over again.

This book, "Testament," is good for showing more of his unpublished stuff. It has many Playboy-type girlie paintings and drawings, some western themes, and his paintings for TV Guide, for the "Battlestar Galactica" show, (which look nothing like the actual TV program, but stand as terrific space fantasy works). The personal photos are also a very nice insight into his life.
All three books in this trilogy cover work from his whole life, and explain his career moves, with slight variations and different guest commentary. The printing is nicely done, so you can enjoy studying the paintings on glossy, quality paper. These three books are very nice additions to your personal bookshelf library.
If you're new to Frazetta's work, I would just suggest that you start in order, with "Icon," and then "Legacy," where the more popular works are printed, to be able to appreciate and understand Frazetta's work and influence in proper perspective. "Testament" is more for the confirmed Frazetta fans.
I wonder if a fourth volume is possible?
One last thing. The selection for the cover art was not a standout choice, but the selection for the art used on the endpapers was marvelous.

Even Alfred Price, who wrote some very good books about the Spitfire said "Readers requiring more detail on individual marks of Spitfire are invited to refer to Spitfire, the story of a famous fighter by Bruce Robertson, the most comprehensive work on this aspect of the aircraft" And this from the man of classics as "Spitfire at War" and "Spitfire, a Documentary History" If he says so, who am I to say he's wrong?
