A real Harleyford Classic
Though already 20 years in publication when I bought my example, it still was well worth searching for. Now, twenty years later again, this book has stood up well against the time. Nowhere there is a part in the book where you think 'but that was covered in far greater detail in another book', the only thing that differs from the more recent standard references is the amount of colour used in photographs and paintings.
Even Alfred Price, who wrote some very good books about the Spitfire said "Readers requiring more detail on individual marks of Spitfire are invited to refer to Spitfire, the story of a famous fighter by Bruce Robertson, the most comprehensive work on this aspect of the aircraft" And this from the man of classics as "Spitfire at War" and "Spitfire, a Documentary History" If he says so, who am I to say he's wrong?

An oldie but goodie. Worth a search.
This was the definative "Spitfire Book" for decades. In many ways it has never been equalled. Many black and white photos, 1/72 scale 3 view tone paintings of the various marks. If I could have only one Spitfire reference, it would be this book. It was solidly bound, and copies have stood up well. It is worth searching out a used copy.

Great original short stories
Clean, no nonsense writing. Terrific plot twists. Memorable characters. Cool. From a dear, proper little old lady just trying to sneak a little something to drink to a retired entrepenour who finds that he is not too old to learn some new "tricks," Frost delights us with a host of memorable characters. A master of a surreal realism, Frost takes the reader on jaunts that are just crazy enough to be true. A class of grade school children getting an unforgettable education in the facts of life at a rabbit farm provides the setting for a side-splitting comedy of errors. A man's musings on his wife's very recent death end in a twist that is both poignant and devilishly clever. More awaits the reader.

Frost is the rare storyteller who can paint a vivid picture, make his reader chuckle knowingly or laugh out loud, cringe at a sudden moment of terrible reality, and then keep one thinking again and again about the characters and their plights. This book is an outstanding work in the very best tradition of the American short story.

Stupendous Subversives
In this collection of 13 short stories, Frank Frost displays his engaging writing style and dark sense of humor. The stories, which range in length from 5 to 25 pages, deal with different cultural issues in American life (e.g. death, sex, encounters with Europeans, gender roles). They grab the reader from the beginning and often have an O.Henry-ish twist.

Frost is a well-known historian of the ancient world who has published many scholarly books and numerous articles, especially with regard to Classical Greek history and archaeology. In the last few years, he has added fiction writing to his Curriculum Vitae with his 1999 novel Dead Philadelphians. In Subversives, he flexes his abilities with the genre of the short story.

I enjoyed all 13 immensely. My favorite of all, though, had to be "The Frampton County Drunk Driving Project" where a Frostean protagonist accepts what turns out to be a peculiar blend of summary punishment from an attractive female sheriff for his slightly elevated blood alcohol level--a plot that would be a natural as the plot for a drive-in movie.

Tailholt Tales

Precious reprint of a classic
"Tailholt Tales" is a reissue of the orginal. In 1993 a heavily edited version, titled "Indian Summer", with an introduction by Malcolm Margolin, was published by Heyday Books. Readers are warned that "Summer" is a pale excerpt of "Tales", containing only those passages pertaining to the Indians.

"Tales" is a wonderful, even miraculous, story of a white boy, Mayfield, who lived with the Indians in the Central Valley of California in the early 1850's. After returning to white society he faced such prejudice that he suppressed his Indian background. Frank Latta, miraculously recorded Mayfield's story just before he died at age 86.

A great record of early California; life among the Indians and race relations.

A great reference books on California's Yokuts Indians
Tailholt Tales, available through Brewer's Historical Press, is the story of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield, better known as Uncle Jeff, as told to Frank F. Latta. The book is made up of the recorded recollections of Uncle Jeff with corroborating letters and stories from others. All in all it provides a rich and detailed account of every day life in the early settlements of the San Joaquin Valley and of the indigenous people. It is particularly noteworthy for its descriptions of his early years living with the Choinumne tribe of the Yokuts people along the King's River in Tulare County. The late Frank F. Latta was former director of the Kern County Museum and a noted, early oral historian. Mr. Latta's books on the Yokuts are still regarded as some of the finest work on the natives indigenous to the San Joaquin Valley.

Uncle Jeff was born about 1843 and his family immigrated to California to join the gold rush. He began living with the local Choinumne tribe after the death of his mother in 1850, when he was eight years old, until 1862. When he first went to live with the natives, their contact with whites was sporadic and their lives much as they had always been. But by 1862, what had been a tribe numbering more than three hundred people had dwindled to less than forty due to the ravages of tuberculosis and measles, as well as a lack of food and other natural resources caused by white settlement. His intimate and detailed recollections of Choinumne ways are fascinating. Mayfield describes a very happy people who make good and respectful use of all the natural resources at their disposal. Sections devoted to hunting and fishing, food ways, childcare, rituals and housing are very richly visualized.

His later stories about life in the town of Tailholt and its environs are very engaging, as are the letters from others verifying or elaborating on his recollections. The people and events recounted in the book represent a great cross section of pioneer life.

We are fortunate that Frank F. Latta was able to capture Thomas Jefferson Mayfield's first hand account of his life. The first person writing style makes the book easy to read. It is a valuable resource on the life of the Yokuts and of the early settlers of the San Joaquin Valley. Sections of the book including the letters from others concurring with Uncle Jeff's stories would make excellent first person quotes for exhibits or school study even at the elementary level.

Anyone interested in early California settlement, Native ways, or the geography, flora or fauna of the San Joaquin Valley during the second half of the nineteenth century will enjoy this historic volume.

The new dust jacket for the book was painted by the late Ben Barker of Susanville California as a mock-up for a mural in Exeter, California. Exeter, known for its murals and antique shops, is 10 miles east of Visalia, in Tulare County, It sits below Sequoia National Park, on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, in the land of Yokuts.

The Yokuts Harvest Mural in Exeter, California, portrays the agrarian lifestyle of the local Yokuts Indians collecting and cooking sour berries during a summer day. The mural is set in the huge oak forest that once covered hundreds of square miles of the San Joaquin Valley.

Rekindling the Home fire
Too bad FLW is not able to read this book. He would have seen where his apprentices have taken his work ,and, through their eyes, how he was remembered. We, the living, are more fortunate. Like any kid, what first attracted me to this book was the pictures,in COLOR no less! But it gets even better;this book brings to life the memory fo FLW by those who knew him best, and gives life to his architecture as it is practiced by his proteges. Now I can feel the presence of the man when I see his work. As an aside,it is time for a book for us empty-nested babyboomers who would like a bungalow sized home with FLW written all over it. We want style, simplicity, function, efficiency, ecology, and enviromental soundness in our space, without all the space;an update of Usonia,a sort of Wright Lite. I hope the apprentices of the apprentices are listening. Meanwhile, read this book!

It shows the great results of FLLW's teachings still going.
The book shows the selected works of several of FLLW's most famous and not so famous apprentices works which have been done since the master passed away in 1959. A great book for the non believers who think the teachings or practices of Mr. Wright died in 1959 when he did. This book shows incredible results of just where organic architecture is today. Check out the works of Edgar Tafel, Cunningham, Milton Stricker, Bob Beharka, Eric Lloyd Wright, Lloyd Wright, John Lautner all of whom I'm fortunate to know and to have known. A great book to have as a part of your collection to show to your friends or those who don't think they are interested in Wright's work, it'll change them into believers fast. Also a great gift for budding architects to steer them in the right (Wright) direction. We can only hope that the work of many lessor known apprentices and fellows of Taliesin gets published soon as Volume #2.

If you loved 'Taxi' then you can't be without this book!
This is the definitive book on the series bar none. Authors Lovece and Franco have carefully and thoroughly researched the classic television program and uncovered anything and everything you could ever possibly want to know about it. Inside the nearly 300 page volume is a complete guide to all the episodes and also the guest cast of each - they even include descriptions of deleted scenes and in some cases guest stars that were cut from some of the shows; a complete shooting script of the episode titled "Jim's Inheritance"; funny, anecdotal stories from behind-the-scenes of the making of each of the episodes; every classic bit is repeated so you can remember it "just like it was"; a 'Taxi' trivia quiz with answers; a list of the cast members' credits on stage, screen and television and the awards that the show won during it's initial network showing.

Unfortunately the book only covers the stars up to the mid 90's when the book was reissued so it is lacking in that area. However, you will still want it for it's sharp and highly original commentary on each of the individual episodes; the authors truly love the show and spared nothing to bring every fact and piece of trivia associated with each to the surface. Don't misunderstand me, there isn't any malicious gossip or an overabundance of unnecessary details; what's presented here is a rich and rewarding history of one of the best shows to ever air on TV. All of the cast members, the shows creator James L. Brooks, the trio of producers and many others connected with 'Taxi' are all interviewed; also included is a terrific recounting of how the famous theme song by Bob James came into being. This is just a simply wonderful book that any 'Taxi' fan must and should have; for TV trivia and history buffs it's also one of the best studies of it's kind available and I highly recommend to them as well. It's a book that can be enjoyed over and over again.

A TAXI FANS DREAM
get this book right now, dont just sit there get it, this is a fnatastic book with great info on the show, every episode, the stars*even the short lived characters) and trivia that even a taxi nut would not know

Deeply Insightful Book
I enjoy reading history books. This has to be one of my all time favorite history books. The fact that many years after its publication, it is still in print speaks to its continuing popularity.

If you are interested in presidential history, this is the book for you. Dr. Williams has done a lot of intense research about the U.S. presidents who hail from Tennessee.

Wow! Great information on our presidents.
This is a must have book for all history lovers. Dr. Williams does a great job of bringing the Tennessee presidents to life. I learned so much I did not know about the presidents and their lives.

Odds & Ends Collection, "Icon" & "Legacy" Better to Start
This is a beautiful book, but the more famous Frazetta works are to be found in the two previous books of this trilogy. So this book is great for serious Frazetta fans, but "Icon" and "Legacy" are better books for showing the most famous of his works.

This book, "Testament," is good for showing more of his unpublished stuff. It has many Playboy-type girlie paintings and drawings, some western themes, and his paintings for TV Guide, for the "Battlestar Galactica" show, (which look nothing like the actual TV program, but stand as terrific space fantasy works). The personal photos are also a very nice insight into his life.

All three books in this trilogy cover work from his whole life, and explain his career moves, with slight variations and different guest commentary. The printing is nicely done, so you can enjoy studying the paintings on glossy, quality paper. These three books are very nice additions to your personal bookshelf library.

If you're new to Frazetta's work, I would just suggest that you start in order, with "Icon," and then "Legacy," where the more popular works are printed, to be able to appreciate and understand Frazetta's work and influence in proper perspective. "Testament" is more for the confirmed Frazetta fans.

I wish this was not the last volume
Cathy and Arnie Fenner have done a marvelous thing. They considered the longtime followers of Frank Frazetta's art and gave them a gift of rareties. This last volume has more of Frank's obscure work than either of the previous books in this series. Obscure does not mean "bad" or "unworthy". Obscure in this case means more creative range and less commercial recognition. Page 107 is a perfect example of what I mean. I can't even describe the plate other than to say it's a fantastic horror composition without a monster in sight. From western to horror, erotic to fantastic, this volume is the best of the three. The commentaries from the various artists is also a nice touch and shows the respect that Frank and his work has established. I'm particularly fond of the words written by Michael Kaluta. All the comments and essays complete the image of Frank, his career, his art, influence and friendship. My pet pieces are on pages 40 (Warrior of Llarn), 45, 73 (it boggles the mind that he repainted this and refers to the original, as it's presented, as a piece of crap!), 105, 107 and 114. Frank Frazetta has rendered images from a rich pallet of differing themes and subjects. For his critics who are fond of lambasting Frank as a painter of fat women and barbarians, this volume should put the final nail in their coffin full of misinfomation. The burial of such rampant subjectivity should give rise to his critics' giving in and taking pleasure from the vital work of this artist.
I wonder if a fourth volume is possible?
One last thing. The selection for the cover art was not a standout choice, but the selection for the art used on the endpapers was marvelous.

Three Strikes: Miners, Musicians, Salesgirls, and the Fighting Spirit of Labor's Last Century

Why don't we learn about this in history class?
Since Reagan's presidency all we Americans have heard are about the "problems" caused by the labor movement. This book is a refreshing reminder of the sacrifices (sometimes, of their lives) and struggles that working people have made to better conditions for themselves and others. The spirit and zeal and commitment to each other as a "union" of equals is inspirational. Remember if it was up to the corporations we'd all be working (starting at age 12) 60-hour weeks. We can thank the labor movement for the eight-hour day, safety regulations, and minimum wage laws.

Inspiring, Compelling
The history of the Woolworth salesgirls stirke, especially, is extremely well written and inspiring. Dana Frank makes you feel and see the interior of Woolworths in the 1930s and the conditions in which the women worked. She also makes you feel the power and joy of their struggle. A must read for anyone interested in American history.

A True Treasure
An excellent compilation of biography, antecdotes, and sermons. This book is a delight to read, and keeps alive our beloved friend, neighbor and pastor. The pictures are a treasure in and of themselves. Definitely a must-have.

A Touching Rememberance & a "must have" for any pastor
This is an outstanding chronicle in word and image of one of the great pastors of the 20th Century. It includes pictures and personal reflections of many friends as well as a number of his sermons. I was touched deeply to read of his commitment to and love of the people of his congregations. While other pastors of "mega-ministries" seem more interested in promoting their own celebrity, Dr. Harrington wanted only to promote the Gospel. He is a true hero.
