Solo Lute Works of Johann Sebastian Bach
Published in Paperback by Kjos Music Company (June, 1990)
Author: Frank Koonce
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Classical guitar and Bach, match made in Heaven
If you play classical guitar, then this is a must have book for your collection. Bach played on classical guitar is a match made in Heaven. Frank Koonce did an excellent job in this book.

The definitive
My teacher had a copy of this book years ago-- Bach is one of the best composers for classical guitar, and also one of the most difficult. Pick up a good Segovia CD, and if the song is by Bach there's a 99% chance it's in this book.

The whole thing is really well done. It's bound so that you can remove and re-add pages if you want. Some pages flip out. The back contains a set of pictures of many of the pieces as they were originally written or transcribed.

This is a hidden gem of a book.

A Must Buy
This is a terrific book. Frank Koonce's selections, and especially his masterly fingering, make this book a must buy for anyone who plays the classic guitar.

Strange Comments

A review of Strange Comments
This work summarizes Dr. King's philosophy, as a historian, reflecting upon thoughts covering a lifetime of study. It is well-written in an easy flowing manner with a little wit and much wisdom. It seems to serve the purpose of a double-edge sword, cutting through humor with deep thought.
I enjoyed his lively portrayal of modern history given in item 66: "What fine people we are until we consider what our history has been. Take the 20th century, another century of devastation."
Comments by D. Moore, Roman Historian

Memorable gnomic sentences
Frank P.King's "Strange Comments" are reflections based on his own experience of life, passing abruptly from idea to idea, subject to subject, "on topics most of us are concerned about." At whatever page the work is opened the reader will find some wise thought expressed in vivid and memorable gnomic sentences. There is no systematic composition; the arrangement of themes or ideas is haphazard, and the subjects dealt with have little connection with the title. An insightful and delightful little book.

Thought Provoking
I find the content of the book Strange Comments to be extremely stimulating and thought provoking. It is the type of book that can be used in the classroom as well as by scholars and entrepreneurs to stimulate thought in assisting one to face reality when making efficient business or lifelong decisions. This is the first book that I have seen that does not only provide the student or reader with a wealth of profound knowledge of situations, but it also provides insight into many historical notions that can actually be used to enhance decision making in planning a course of action.

Due to the method in which the book is laid out and the numerical accounting of phrases, one can easily annotate ideas in which he or she may wish to use or revisit in those moments of question. The book contains a wealth of knowledge for centering situations to be viewed in their true essence. On numerous occasions the book gives one the comfort of knowing that he or she is not alone in many conflicting situations and that much of what confronts us today is but a daily dose of history. I would definitely recommend the reviewing of this book by students, scholars, and business professionals.

GREAT BOOK
I was trying to get a book that includes a great deal of modern portfolio theories and some practical examples to show me how to allocate my asset in a more scientific and knowledgeable way. This book has cached my eyes and I was very satisfied by the amount of knowledge I learned from it in a relative short period time. Here are some pro and con I want to mention about this book:

Pro
. Great amount of financial knowledge covered (asset allocation, risk analysis, etc)
. Easy to understand (practical examples present)
. Do not need to spend too much time on it, everything was concisely written (only 250+ pages)
. CHEAP comparing to other financial books

Con,
. Though ideas were clearly crossed inside the book, but some parts are poorly written.(Not a big deal, but still)

Conclusion: a MUST BUY for those entry level or intermediate level investors who want to learn modern portfolio theories in a relative short period of time.

A must read for today's investor
This is an excellent intro to the concepts of modern portfolio management. It is vital for today's investor to understand that he needs to take a portfolio view when making investment decisions and understand how the portfolio's assets are inter-related to each other. He must also realize that understanding how much you can lose is as important as understanding how much you can gain. This book clearly and effectively illustrates these and many more fundamental concepts that every successful investor should know. It's a great read.

great resource
In the current market environment, risk management is crucial. This is one of the only books I've read that explains to investors in plain English what "diversification" really means. A great resource for any market, this book is particularly helpful in managing money in the post-tech bubble.

get this, think about the rest later
when this book used to be out of print, legions of ambitous tap dancers - including myself - were searching used-book stores across the country to find a copy. i know some who ended up copying every single page in the lincoln center library. the reason is very simple: there is no other book on the subject that even comes close to gathering this much information on the history of tap dancing. even though historians may argue about some details, the book is usually considered the standard by all the tap pros i know and whoever reads it will have a good understanding of where the art form comes from, what the important issues are, what stages of development tap dancing went through, who the important dancers of different times and styles were, and what the characteristics of different styles and approaches in tap dance are. if you want to know about the history of tap: get this book. otherwise you will find yourself digging through the shelves of rare book stores when it is out of print again.

Great teaching tool
This is a fantastic book! In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I made my college advanced tap class read it, as well. They were truly inspired by this book and have gained a renewed since of determination as far as entering the field of "commercial entertainment" with an emphasis on tap. Each person has a truly unique account of how it was back in the day, when people actually went to "tap clubs" just like we would go to dance clubs nowadays. What an experience to see this exciting time through their eyes.

Not just for tap dancers!
This book is wonderfully written with first-hand accounts about show business during the first half of the 1900's. It is not just for tap dancers, but for anyone interested in getting a feel for the way of life during that period. The amount of information I learned about vaudeville, movie musicals, and even black history in America is much more than I expected when I picked up this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas: The Film the Art, the Vision
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (October, 1993)
Authors: Frank Thompson and Tim Burton
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Splendid!
An extremely wonderful book, and a must-have for all die-hard Nightmare fans. Aside from the new special edition DVD of the film, this will give you all the behind-the-scenes info that's readily availible to the public. The book tells everything about Nightmare--from the poem Burton wrote while at Disney, to the credits of who worked on the movie.

AWESOME BOOK
I got this book for my husband and it's a must have for fans of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. The book contains beautiful photographs and drawings that made this movie come alive.

A wonderful companion to the film
This colorful, coffee-table book turns out to be quite a very interesting read and an excellent book for both TNBC fans and Tim Burton fans in general. The book gives a solid overview of the creation of TNBC, from concept to production to the finished product.

On the plus side: Many original, and beautiful, concept sketches and artwork, both by Tim Burton and other conceptual artists; the complete lyrics to all of Danny Elfman's score, a very facsinating look at the actual production (creation of sets, puppets, mechanics behind stop-motion) of TNBC.

On the negative side: Nothing to speak of. A nice touch would've been the inclusion of Burton's original poem (now woefully out of print), but ah well.

Highly recommended!

An indispensable Tool.
I can't praise enough this book. The First section explain the Basic about Storytelling, the Second section expose The Screenwriting Tools, the Third Section from the page 100 to the end provide an Analyses of 16 Films using the following tools/elements:

Protagonist and Objective, Conflict, Obstacles, Premise and Opening, Main tension, Culmination and Resolution, Theme, Unity, Exposition, Characterization, Development of the History, Dramatic Irony, Preparation and Aftermath, Planting and Payoff, Plausibility, Action and Activity, Dialogue, Visuals, Dramatic Scenes.

My conclusions:
1) The information is clear and concise explaining the essential elements of a script
2) The Analyses Section provides examples in depth
3) The book is cheap

Is a favorite between my 12 books about Writing, you can't go wrong with this bok even if you are a Pro because the analyses of the films provide you a comparative of the central principles of a good movie.

Masterful! Brilliant! Amazing!
Forget all of the other books out there...or, buy the other books, but make this one first on your list. Howard and Mabley are both accomplished professional writers and they know their tools of the craft, which they now share with you. This book succeeds immensely simply because it lists the elements of a screenplay and tells how each is best used and why. It has all of the basic elements: Dialogue, Dramatic Irony, etc. But ever heard of "Preparation and Aftermath", "Future and Advertising", "Planting and Payoff", or "Plausibility"? If not, then learn how to include them in YOUR screenplay to make it better, more exciting, and more fulfilling in a dramatic and universal way. Absolutely the best book on screenwriting. Period. Buy it now. I have read it a countless number of times and each time I learn something new or it spurs my imagination to create something new in the world of my screenplay. Please do yourself a favor and get a hold of this book. A masterpiece of screenplay instruction.

A Book to Read
"Tools" is written by an intellectual with many years under his belt. He starts from the bottom up, and teaches you writing from the most basic levels to the most complex of ideas. This book not only improves your screenwriting skills by leaps and bounds, but enriches your movie-going experience.

Trapped at the Bottom of the Sea
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (June, 1990)
Author: Frank E. Peretti
Amazon base price: $5.99
Average review score:

Frank Peretti scores again!
It's Frank Peretti's brilliant novel writing skills...condensed! It's a super-cool family of archeologists--minus a mother--who investigate phenomena in the spirit of Indiana Jones, only with a Christian perspective. A nice alternative to the gore and junk in the Indiana Jones movies.

This time, all is NOT well in the Cooper family. Lila and her father part under unhappy terms, and she boards a military plane bound for the U.S. Things go ill, however, when the plane is hijacked and Lila finds herself locked inside a huge steel canister...Trapped at the Bottom of the Sea.

The Cooper men team up with Bad Dave, a local, lovable dude who helps them island-hop in order to rescue Lila before time runs out. Russian terrorists, angry natives (every book has to have them), and the miraculous love of God, all crammed into this cool little novel make it hard to put down. Parents and kids alike will love it!

Your books are the best!
Great book. I liked so much I could not stop reading it

a GREAT book!
This book is suspenseful to the end! A gripping book that I couldn't put down. I couldn't wait to find out the conclusion of the book. I recommend this book to kids and teens! This series is awesome!

Trooper Donovan
Published in Paperback by Leisure Books (13 June, 2000)
Author: Frank Roderus
Amazon base price: $4.50
Average review score:

inexperienced not wanting more
Donovan joins N Troop, not really wanting to become an experienced calvaryman but would rather serve out his enlistment on the safer side of any combat. however, Trooper Donovan will see plenty of action throughout this book. This is a pretty good read, smooth but stimulating as are all of the RODERUS books.

One Recruit's Army
"Trooper Donovan" illustrates the timelessness of some themes. Though thoroughly grounded historically in the Indian fighting army of the immediate post-Civil War era, the experiences of a young army recruit thrust into a military unit are ones with which many of us Twentieth Century warriors can identify. Roderus skillfully blends the minor, almost insignificant, details of daily life with the 7th Cavalry's mission to give a realistic portrayal of one man's experiences.

TROOPER DONOVAN
Frank Roderus brings us another exceptional western in TROOPER DONOVAN. From the very first day John Donovan arrives at Camp Horan to his final decision at the end, you find yourself pulling for TROOPER DONOVAN. It is evident from the start that this is a very well researched book. Unlike other western fiction about the cavalary that tend to glorify being a horse soldier, TROOPER DONOVAN gives us an excellent window into what life must have really been like being a cavalry trooper in the old west. VERY WELL DONE FRANK!

Best Snake Book !!
This book probably the BEST snake book I owned. Large of photo (I mean: really BIG photo!!, double pages). This book give you a very comprehensive section about the anatomy, how they hunt, habitats, and senses ...
It written in a very short informative way ....
I really love this book !! This book is "A MUST" for all snake lovers ...

Stunning!
This is a wonderful book, full of captivating pictures and beautifully written explanatory chapters. A serpent enthusiast myself, I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its excellent visuals guide you through the first few chapters which discuss several aspects of snakes themselves. The majority of the rest of the book looks at many different types of snakes..a page or two devoted to a certain individual species. I was impressed at the variety it covered, from boas to pythons to colubreds to venomous species. I applaud the author...this book will entertain beginners to professionals. This is a must for anyone who is interested in these amazing legless creatures.
--Lauren

Excellent for everyone
This book starts out by giving a very comprehensive section about the anatomy, hunting, evolution, habitats, and senses of the snake. Each of these topics were given two pages, of which were filled with interesting information. I keep snakes, but I still found myself learning things. After this, the book goes into a section that tells about many interesting species of snakes in a great format including color pictures. While the book doesn't feature as many species as I would have liked to have seen, the ones it does show are well chosen(for the most part). After this section, the book goes into a huge directory of genuses and species of almost all the snakes in the world(including some rare subspecies). This section of the book is invaluable for a herpitoligest or just someone looking up the latin name of a snake. Overall the book is great for average person and person who knows alot about snakes alike. I think the book could have been better if he had featured more species of snakes, but the book is fine as it is.

Using Networks
Published in Paperback by (15 January, 1998)
Author: Frank J., Jr. Derfler
Amazon base price: $29.99
Average review score:

Great book ...
In depth description and illustration of various network technologies, but unfortunately, having been published in 1998, it leaves out many of today's popular technologies.

Excellent Starting Point!
I wish this had been the first book I purchased. Frank does an outstanding job of covering fundamental areas of networking. And in a way that is easy to understand. Highly recommend this book.

Great OverAll Book !!!
Great Book !, For the beginner and Intermediate Networker. I'm quite experienced myself and needed a book to pass around to my associates and I was surprisingly pleased with the informative content and history of everything. I wouldn't Exactly consider it "Using Networks", it's much, much MUCH deeper than that !!!!! Topics Range from ways to connect PC's for only print sharing, to all the standards in place today, to in depth physical layer discussions and the software market.

Definitely worth $30 !!!, even if you only use it for it's 30 page Glossary !
