Wonderful book!
I love the author's style of writing. The book contains the stories about the Little People, the Steel-lo-booch-go-gee that were told among generations. The author uses the storytelling device to present the stories. I was fascinated by the stories of the Little People and their connection to children and healing. I would highly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down.

A poet of great beauty
Frank Stanford died a suicide at a young age, yet managed to create a body of work that deserves to be read despite his youth and nearly 20 years of obscurity. His poems, both subject and meter, are of great beauty. It's too bad that most of his work is out of print but, despite this, the University of Arkansas Press manages to keep the best of his poems alive. They do deserve to be read, and a good part of Stanford's work merits a wider audience. Check out The Light the Dead See for a great example of what this guy managed to create in his short life.

A Stunning vision of Death in everyday Life.
Unique in form and subject matter, Frank Stanford was a poet of great vision and power. While his verse may seem random and vulgar at first glance, The Light the Dead See stunned me with its familiarity with Death as a companion and friend. With this in mind, it seems no wonder that Stanford eventually felt compelled to take his own life.

Stanford's poetry is without bounds. The imagery he puts forth concerning the backwaters of rural America gave me chills, not because it was frightening, but because it illustrated the truth about the often violent and arbitrary turns of chance rule the lives of many of us.

This book is not to be missed. It could very well change the way you look at poetry.

The Limits of Dissent: Clement L. Vallandigham & the Civil War (North's Civil War Series, 8)

Well-Researced: Highly Controversial
Author Frank L. Klement (with tongue firmly in cheek) once told an audience that there were only two imortant central figures in the Civil War: Lincoln and Clement L. Vallandigham; the subject of this disputable biography. One must understand that Frank L. Klement is a revisionist historian with 62% of his 221 published items anti-Lincoln. Attacking Lincoln, the most sacred icon in American history, for blatant illegalities in violation of civil liberties caused a sensation in the histrorical community when it was first introduced. Klement's contention that the Copperhead movement was not a threat to the union has generally been accepted by major Lincoln scholars including James Macpherson. The question remains how far can civil liberties be protected before they endanger national security. In the case of Clement Vallandigham the outer limits were reached in a time when many, including Lincoln, felt that constitutional liberties would lose the nation. Klement's thesis has gained more respectability since the dissent of Viet Nam, but the problem presented by Vallandigham has really never been resolved. Vallandigham won two out of eight elections for congressman from Ohio. Preaching preservation of the union with slavery intact, he believed the South could not be coerced into reentering the union. The Ohio congressman was the spokesman for many in the midwest who favoured agriculture over industry, opposed equality for blacks, and wanted to continue the balance of power the midwest played in the rivalry between North and South. Had this been all to Vallandigham he would have been written off as a hopeless reactionary. But the Dayton congressman was also a liberal, speaking out against arbitrary arrests, executive usurpation, as well as supporting abolishment of capital punishment, Jewish rabbis as army chaplains and free trade. The Ohioan was also-according to James Horan-a child prodigy learning the alphabet at age two and learning to speak both Latin and Greek at age twelve. (see Horan's CONFEDERATE AGENT,PA.18). No physical coward, Vallandigham courted martyrdom by defying federal authorities. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment by General Burnside (upheld by the court in EX PARTE VALLANDIGHAM). Wisely, Lincoln dumped him over the border into Dixie, ignoring the gadfly wdhen he attended the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1864. Klement's Vallandigham comes across as an insufferable self-righteous prig who was neutralized by Lincoln. But Vallandigham-the faithful son of a Calvinist Huguenot minister-always believed he would be vindicated by history. While defending a client in a murder case Vallandigham grabbed the wrong pistol and killed himself. He has largely been forgotten by posterity. The bullet that ended Lincoln's life, on the otherhand, made him immortal. Such is the verdict of history.

twisted and beautiful psychedelic children's book
this is not the type of book your would buy for the child of your p.c. sister-in-law. but it's one of the only books i remember as truly great from my formative years, and it's only grown better as i've aged. you can search the tighly packed illustrations for hours and still find something new the next time you look. it's got dark themes, but i don't remember having problems with that when i was young. instead, i read it now, and marvel at how little and how much of the rich content i understood. it's immediately obvious - the man must have been on a lot of drugs when he made this book - one look at the copyright date pretty much confirms your suspicions. *whatever* he was on, the result is gratifying. but if you agree with those who want to shut all mapplethorpe and nine inch nails in a box somewhere, don't bother. trust me, you're glad it's out of print.

brilliant and useful
This excellent book should be included in all "American" literature courses. Art and music and story telling, as well as traditional ceremony are elements in the incredibly diverse fabric of Native American literature. Of course a book of this length can hardly investigate specific Native American nations, but this is still a valuable work, by a brilliant and courageous scholar. White eurocentric paradigms may continue to make the classroom a very dull place, but a book like this can enliven it, and should be allowed to do so.

Delightfully malevolent & highly recommended
Little Evil Things: Volume V is the fifth and final volume of an award-winning series of audio horror anthologies on CD and features a modern music accompaniment. The music that complements these short thrillers was specifically composed to the actors' performances, resulting in a high-energy, pulse-pounding, spine-tingling audio experience. Volume V features five tales, from a world with its information superhighway out of control to a fossil brought to rampaging life. Recommended for fantasy/horror fans ages thirteen and older, Little Evil Things: Volume V is a delightfully malevolent, highly recommended addition to any Halloween or horror audiobook collection.

Whether beginning a Liturgy Committee or reforming an existing one, this book covers the guidelines as to how to accomplish everyone's goal of great liturgy. It re-focuses the energy of the committee from the extreme details to the overall enviroment.

The explanation of what the committee should focus on, how to focus on the selected part of the liturgy, and evaulate how the effect of the focus of the committee, is invaluable to accomplishing the the committee's goals.

Timeless, practical and very, very funny
I found a copy of this book at an estate sale ten years ago. At first I thought it would just be fun to have on my book shelf, but when I opened it up, the wisdom poured out of it.

Written for single women moving to New York in the 30s, the author does not hesitate to instruct, cajole and browbeat her reader. You MUST own four bed jackets. You MUST NOT have too much antique furniture.

And the overriding theme of the book: when you are single, you MUST look out for yourself, because no one else will, and you might as well look out for yourself really well.

Several of my friends read this book after I did. Based on its advice, one friend threw away all her worn out lingerie and started fresh. Another completely redecorated her house. Another started a financial savings plan. I began preparing much nicer meals for myself.

I don't think any of us has bought a bed jacket. But maybe you will, after reading this delightfully illustrated and charming book.
