New insights on Jesus through facts and fiction
For two thousand years Christians and historians have searched for more accurate descriptions of Jesus of Nazareth. Following Gutenberg's printing of the Bible in the 15th century, untold millions have been able to read the four gospels, Mathew,Mark, Luke and John as they seek for the true portrait. Inspiring as the accounts are, nevertheless, these descriptions of Jesus are not identical. While the first three show a fairly similar Jesus as a humble, itinerant preacher and healer walking about the countryside with a group of followers, the gospel of John portrays a majestic, from the beginning of time figure, of the very Son of God. Frank Tribbe, from a lifetime of Bible study and travels to countries significant for early church history, has written a refreshing narrative describing Jesus as he might have been seen through the eyes of Joseph of Arimathea. Tribbe acknowledges that to write his book, he has used fiction adding to the biblical accounts. Building on the friendship of Jesus and Lazarus, he suggests that Lazarus might have been the real author of John's gospel. Tribbe's precise details of Herod's scourging of Jesus and the final hours of the crucifixion are heart-rending. Tribbe is known for his devoted years of research to the shround of Turin, the garment provided by Joseph of Arimatha for wrapping the body of Jesus for burial. Far from just a book of fiction, I, Joseph of Arimathea builds on known data to give a moving account of Jesus of Nazareth and the earliest days of Christian history.

A thought-provoking work of meticulous and literate fiction
In his richly textured historical novel I, Joseph Of Arimathea, author Frank Tribbe presents the story of the rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, a disciple of Jesus, and the person who laid Jesus' body in a tomb of rock following the crucifixion. Here is also related the experiences of the women most closely associated with Jesus and the encounter of those who met the resurrected messiah on the road to Emmaus. This vivid, engaging, highly recommended novel draws upon apocryphal New Testament texts (particularly the Gospel of Nicodemus) to recreate the life of Joseph of Arimathea, Jesus, the various disciples, Lazarus, Pilate, and others. The reader is treated to a fascinating account of the survival and earliest history of the Shroud of Turin; the "lost years" of Jesus before entering his brief public ministry as recorded in the Gospels; Joseph of Arimathea's role with respect to introducing Christianity to Britain and the west (before it reached Rome); as well as details of daily life in the first century, descriptions of travel, plausible reconstructions of ancient business practices, languages, literacy, education, and metallurgy. A unique, entertaining, and thought-provoking work of meticulous and literate fiction.

Incredible Ned
This is a great book that my 5 year-old thoroughly enjoys. I recently read this book to his Kindergarten class, and the kids loved it. They loved the way the book's prose rhyme, and the excitement of the fact that the school children in the book really could "see" what Ned said! After reading the book, the class discussed what they would do if they had Ned's ability. It was a great learning experience as well as enjoyable for the children.

Incredible Ned
I like this book because I like art, and I like the idea of the story. My favorite part is when the art teacher comes and figures out why Ned's words appear over his head.

Easy to Follow Guide for Irish Walks
While visiting Ireland for a week my Dad and I enjoyed two of the walks described in the book. Walk 16 from Spa to Tralee winded next to a quiet stretch of ocean and canal. While following the trail through farmers's fields spotted cows slowly blinked at our presence. We viewed horseback riders, the Blennerville windmill, and wild flowers during our trek. It was an up close view of the beautiful green Irish countryside. We also enjoyed walk 14 on Inishmore (one of the Aran Islands). The book gave helpful advice on using local transportation to travel to the starting point of the walk. Starting at the mighty fortress Dun Aonghasa we marveled at the sheer cliffs protecting the fortress. The view was incredible. Leave extra time for listening to the crashing ocean waves and exploring the rocky walls. On the return walk the ocean view was captivating. We saw a local farmer repairing a stone wall by hand. This walk allowed us to enjoy a unique part of Ireland firsthand. The 35 walks listed in the book were from 2 to 9 miles in length and descriptions of elevation and estimated walking time were included. Public transportation information was provided where available which we found helpful since we did not have a rented car. Using this book we were able to enjoy recommeded sites, but also get off the beaten path to see the real Ireland.

Walk and don't get lost!
Planning a walking trip sight unseen is always an act of faith. This well-written guide makes it easier to discover Ireland off the beaten path and be confident that you are setting off on walks that you can handle, that you know what to expect along the way, and can judge ahead of time whether to take one walk versus another. Booth includes information on where to find food and water as well as toilet facilities. I looked at three walking guides for an upcoming trip to Ireland, and this is the only one I am taking with me.

Useful and amusing
We spent 6 days in Italy, and ended up only doing 2 of the walks (plus visited the site of a 3rd), but found this book a great resource for getting away from the crowds, without being in the back of beyond. It provided ideas for some truly unique places to go that weren't on the usual "tourist's map" of Italy. Also, one of the hotel recommendations in the beginning (there aren't many -- the book is not at all a comprehensive guide) was a great find. We did find at least one discrepancy in a trail marking (at the end of the Florence walk), so be alert and flexible!

kept us busy for our 2 week vacation
We spent 2 weeks in Italy and did 6 walks. We would love to do more. This was a very easy guide to follow and you could make this the only book you need. Can't wait to try another one soon.

Industrializing America : Understanding Contemporary Society through Classical Sociological Analysis

Sociocultural Materialism Rules
The title to this book is somewhat misleading. It is not about the Industrial Revolution as recounted in the history texts, but about the IR that is transforming America today. This book examines the costs of hyper-industrialism on such institutions as family, community, political campaigning, agriculture and higher education. It really brings social theory alive.

Sociocultural Materialism at its Best
Elwell writes with clear and concise prose, which makes his interesting subject of modern American society incredibly interesting. One of the finest explanations of sociocultural materialist theory and classic social theory (a la Weber, Marx) as they relate to everyday issues. A great effort. Marvin Harris would be proud

Some solved problems, little background
My first exposure to Bessel functions was while I was doing an internship and I was attempting to simulate radar imaging on a spherical target. The gentleman that I was studying under had previously written this code in Matlab, and I was attempting to translate it to C++. I purchased this book with the hope that it would help me obtain a better knowledge base to tackle this problem. It didn't.

Later, I took a graduate math course in special functions (Green's Functions, Fourier Transforms, Legendre Polynomials, and Bessel Functions). Although this course was extremely challenging, I found that the examples given in Bowman's text were perfect for the segment of the course that was devoted to Bessel Functions, and it helped me raise my grade on homeworks.

In the end, the book is strictly about Bessel Functions. There is hardly any background (page 1 begins right away with Bessel Functions of zero order). The book progresses linearly with the most basic Bessel Functions, a few examples, and eventually ends with Bessel Functions of any real order and a few applications.

A true introduction to Bessel's fuctions.
I think this book acutally fulfil the the titles it named. An "introduction ot the bessel functions, ." I have read other books on so called introduction ot certain subjects , say Riemann's Zeta Function, but actually the book is as difficult as a treatise book on that subject. In this book, the author acutually doing the good work. From the beginning, he defined
the bessel function of order zero as a power series, Don't ask why, just accept the facts. Then he gradually presents more facts about Bessel functions without rigorous proof. That is good!! Before mastering the subject, just accept the facts and in the future, if you want to know more about Bessel functions, you have already have a certain background knowledge about that.
If you read Watson's timeless classic " teatise on "bessel function", not only you will get stucked and you may lose interest to that as well. So I think this is the best book for those mathematicians or engineers who would encounter bessel function. I really have a lot of fun in reading this book !

Beautiful book, well done and full of facts.
As a person of Irish descent, I was very happy to see "The Irish in America". This book is full of colorful illustrations showing what the Irish have accomplished in this country. I am referencing the book in my MA, History Thesis, this Autumn.

On page 57, however, the editors have made an understandable error. They attribute the founding of Manhattan College (1853), De La Salle University (1863) and St. Mary's (Moraga, California, (1863) to the Irish Christian Brothers. As a 1965 graduate of Manhattan College, I can tell you that these three colleges were founded by the French Christian Brothers, also know as the De La Salle Brothers. This teaching order was founded in Paris by St. John Baptist de la Salle, and predates the Irish Christian Brothers by almost two hundred years. To my knowledge, the only college founded by the Irish Christian Brothers in the U.S. is Iona College (1940) in New York. Personally, I enjoyed the book, found new facts about the Irish in America, and would recommend it to any Irish or Irish-American person.

Famous Irish offer engrossing overview of culture in USA
Coffey and Golway give a wonderful overview of the experiences of Irish men and women in the United States. Coming to the U.S. as a result of political an religious oppression, as well as a result of the potato blight in the mid-19th century, the Irish worked hard to gain respectablity and political voices as American citizens. In many cases, especially in the early 20th Century, to be Irish was to be a second class citizen in the U.S. Today's attitudes prove that the Irish have come a long way in American society from being judged as such to becoming a very proud and celebrated nationality in our country.

Coffey and Golway use numerous anecdotes, excerpts, and other quotations from famous and not so famous Irish Americans. Included in this book are Denis Leary, Frank McCourt, and a forward by Patrick Kennedy. Reflections of these Irish-American personalities on their grandparents' or parents' lives and hard work, as well as memories of Catholic school, and other aspects of Irish-American life. Glossy photographs accent each passage beautifully and add to the overall attraction of the book. Contributions by all the authors provides a celebration of Irish ethnicity and heritage in the United States that is portrayed as humorous, melancholy, but overall proud. This book accents the PBS Documentary by the same name very nicely. After reading this book, I wished in a sense, that I had some Irish heritage.

Brief history of "wild weasels"
A good book that describes in some detail the development of wild weasels, associated gears and tactics. Traces development through veitnam to more current times. Good coverage of topics related to WW history and development and some Airforce / Navy politics. Good for the casual readers with no engineering background to follow and understand. For engineers or researchers this will provide a good general background and introduction into this field.

Great book for an introduction
I worked in the field of EW for 9 years, and so I am very biased about this book, but I am also a harsh critic on books about this topic. I found the book to be a great intro to what exactly electronic warfare is and how it is used on the battlefield. Stories abound, terms are explained, and the writing is in a friendly style. I did find it strange that the book is called "Iron Hand", the term the USN uses, and the front cover photo is of USAF F-16CJs. The USAF uses the term "Wild Weasel".

Wonderful and Uncommon View of Iron Construction Today
There were only a few architectural drawings of The Disney in the back of the book: most of this photographic tour de force deals with the iron works, the skeleton of the building. After paging through this entire book, which is on display for sale at the historic Lummis Home off the Avenue 43 exit of the Pasadena Freeway, I had a new appreciation of the new Disney Concert Hall, which I had photographed under contruction against the backdrop of a thunderstorm.

Garcetti takes you close to the massive lattice of ironwork that underlies the curvaceous and apparently delicate hall. "Lattice" , "Skeleton", "frame", none of these words capture in their sense of mere adumbration the massiveness of the iron underneath. Can I say it simply? There's really a lot. Just what you're looking for in a book entitled "Iron."

Garcetti does a great job of capturing the workers, too, with many closeup shots of them as people that really bring out their essential happiness. There's a sign of their union hall, and the wonderful holiday shot of the christmas tree being lifted up to the top on a huge steel beam.

Also shown are some huge ironworking tools.

If you're fascinated with the state of the art in iron-based construction today, I'd say this book is for you.

Something else to remember -- once a building is built, you'll never be able to take photographs of it under construction again. It may sound trivial to say it that way, but after reading this book you probably won't think so.

Iron: Erecting the Walt Disney Concert Hall
In his foreword, Frank Gehry calls ironworkers "the forgotten heroes of architecture," and this book celebrates their courage and skill. Nobody who saw the structural frame going up on Grand Avenue will forget its raw beauty, but most of the bones were covered in a shimmering skin a year before the hall opened. Garcetti, better known as the former DA of Los Angeles County, has captured the physicality of the work in his photos, and in the words of the people who did it. Their pride and solidarity are inspiring. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

A FUN book for young children!
My almost 3-year-old loves this book and the others in the series! The language is simple and he thinks he is reading the book himself since he has it memorized. My 6-year-old was able to read the books to his brother! Small children will love this book series especially if they like animals. It may be a bit too repetitious for older children.

Is the Spaghetti Ready?
I learned that when the folks came up and asked for food, the lady gaeve them food! More and More animals came up! The lady asked them why they were not eating! They said, "We were waiting for you! She came to the table and they ate together!
