Black Music, White Business: Illuminating the History and Political Economy of Jazz

General Observations and really great vignettes
This book is a useful expose of how the music business scams and exploits all artists, not just Black artists. It is vitally important at a time when the Wynton Marsalis/Albert Murray school of Jazz history is trying to claim that Jazz is a "celebration" of American capitalism. Kofsky shows Jazz musicians have been and continue to be victims of capitalism! And as someone with a background in studying the history of country music and western swing, I can agree with another reviewer here that the same tales of exploitation can be told about white musicans as well.

Kofsky is most effective in the individual stories he tells in the separate articles in this book where as has already been pointed out he "names names." Kofsky unmasks a lot of people who have manufactured images that they were friends of the jazz musician like Blue Note Records.

One of his most interesting vignettes is his exposure of Vanderbuilt heir, self-praising liberal, and paternalist interferer with Jazz John Hammond. He exposes how Hammond's phoney story about Bessie Smith's death was part of the legend that helped net the already-wealthy Hammond scores of thousands of dollars, back when a dollar was a dollar, while Smith and her estate got zilch. Just the Bessie Smith story is worth the price of the book!

An important illumination of the way jazz has worked
As the pithy title suggests, African-American culture has been the primary source of jazz music -- and folks who hail from that culture have had prescious little influence over where the profits from the music have gone... and, even, over who has gotten work and who has been heard.

This book illuminates that ugly side to the jazz world. The first three chapters get things rolling in fits and starts without adequate evidence to demonstrate that the explotation of black musicians has been markedly different from that of other musicians. If this were the bulk of the work it would be interesting reading but would not do much more than preach to the choir.

The rest of the book builds on those chapters, deepens them, broadens them, and creates an inarguable portrait of exploitation that goes so far as to names names *and* provide well-researched explanations that refute, for example, the notion that race is what one should focus on when exploring the history of jazz.

The "black" and "white" of the title may appear to refer to genetics or race -- but the text makes it clear that these are cultural categories and are inextricably bound up within the history of jazz, what it has sounded like, what it sounds like now, and how it has been made.

I remember it from my youth
I live in Vermont. The adjoining forest contains an old grave marker which reads "Bob, Son of Battle". Anyone have an explanation?

I liked this book
I liked Bob Son of Battle because I thought Bob was cute and nice. I didn't like when Bob was eating a lamb and blood was dripping.

Best textbook for abnormal psychology
It is unfortunate that this text is temporarily out of print. It is the bex text book on abnormal psychology. Having served as adjucnt associate professor for a state college as well as teaching Bible college, this is the most accurate text that I have seen. Dr. Meyers is a leading expert on depression and children's problems. This book however covers a full gamet of abnormal psychology with unusually astute treatment suggestions. What many people do not realize is that many psychiatrist lack common sense, and good counseling depends on so called common sense, Dr. Meyers and associates display a wisdom that those of us who have been in practice of mental health much appreciate. This would be a very good book for young therapist of any belief system to read and pick up concepts of treatment. Yet, the book is written in a simple style that a college freshman can read and understand. An outstanding piece of work that should not be out of print.

Bullet-Proof Buddhists: The Real Deal
Frank Chin's collection of essays is magnificent. The book is a course in itself on the authenticity of the Chinese-American experience in American culture. Chin's ideas are well researched, even scholarly in origin, but they are presented in ways that are eminently accessible. Each of the essays is provocative of the reader's thinking. I loved the essay on "Lowe Hoy & the 3 Legged Toad", for its exposition of strategy in Chinese social experience, and for its use of authentic Cantonese colloquialisms in his interviewees' speech.

Frank Chin combs the landscape of Chinese American culture
There is no question that when it comes to specific, focused cultural criticism, Frank Chin has the task nailed down. I don't know the time frame spanned by these essays, but in terms of content they cover all the bases. Any student of Asian-American history and culture can profit from Chin's sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes frightfully serious analysis of several aspects of the Asian-American experience. Chin deals with immigration/migration; gang subcultures; folk history and mythology; and others. But the thing that makes this book so impressive, beyond its coverage, is Chin's writing style -- fast and loose, comfortable and razor-sharp. The jacket describes him as a "literary gangster" -- never have I heard a more apt description of an author. He wrangles words from the oral histories he obtains and makes them work for him. But he is a respectful gangster -- the subjects of his interviews seem open, warm to him and to his neverending questions. The text can get heavy at times, but this is a function of the content it taps. A very, very powerful book.

calcucus is DA bomb!!
when i was back in the vietnam war, my commander made us all take calcucus. he said a whole bunch of loogie about how it would make us better soldiers. well, little did i know that he was right. one day, when i was out in the heat of the battle, i came upon an unaware guerilla who did not know calucucus, i immediately figured out the derivation of my rifle and with a few simple calcultions, i was able to blow my opponent out of the water from several feet with my high powered rifle. take calcuclus and save your life and your country's life. go calcucluals!!!!

Book wonderful and easy to understand; Saxon does it again!
This book teaches the advanced topics of calculus in a manner that one does no learn one day and forget in a month. The Saxon series learning premise is that of an 'incremental development', which means once a skill is acquired and it is practiced, another fascet is added, and then another until you have a full understanding of the material. This book is great for anyone at all who wants to learn Calculus; not just students. It is recommended that the book "Advanced Mathematics" should preceed this because the first part "Calculus" quickly reviews all the topics in that book. So, I say get the book and try it; it is the best way to learn Calculus!

A must have for your "how to" library!
This is truly an excellent book! Great techniques and illustrations shown with fabulous detail! Inspirational too! I highly recommend this book, especially if you like painting buildings or scenes with buildings. One of the best watercolor books I've seen!

Indispensible book for the serious artist.
I am a "profesional" seascape artist and needed a push to get myself painting again; and perhaps a change of pace. I find that this book is brim-full of important info, techniques and ideas which any artist can enjoy applying. Raves!

Everything you wanted to know about the movie
This commemorative book, published in 1992, certainly does its job of commemorating the movie Casablanca. It's a slender book with tons of photos of the actors, sets, and posters from the movie, and packed with everything you seemingly would want to know about it.

You find out about what led to Casablanca's production, its inspiration, how the actors were chosen, the history occurring at the time that helped it along, the quarrels on set, the difficulties with budget and timing, the process for coming up with the ending of the movie. You learn about the director's accent and odd way of speaking that sometimes confused everyone. (When he asked for a "poodle" and such a dog was brought, he angrily tried to clarify that what he wanted was a "puddle". ) You learn about Bogart's standoffishness to Ingrid Bergman, and Peter Lorre's continual playing of practical jokes on the cast. There's a bio about each actor, and how the movie affected his or her career, and a listing of movies that were intended copies or spinoffs. This is a great book if you love Casablanca, its actors, or want to know about moviemaking of that era.

Can there really be better?
"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." Unrequittted love? No one knows it better than Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Paris, Casablanca, does it matter where love meets up again? Reality intrudes, and makes these two face facts. This is the ultimate love story of the century. What this world truly means. Unrequited love, and our responsibility to everyone else. "Fall in love all over again." And I always thought that quote was so corny. Until I saw this. Watch this. You'll really fall in love with Ingrid and Humphrey, and cry at their nobility and their own love. And what they'll do for love. See it. Understand it. There is nothing better.

A super find for anyone interest in Castle and medieval life
I got this from a library sale, thinking it was likely another skim the surface books, instead was delighted to find it so much more. If it has to do with Castles you will find it in here. It has a guide to the notable Castle of Britain for those on the tour, giving you details about its layout and history. It covers the architecture and its reasons and purposes, it goes into the feudal system and how lords, barrons, knights were made and ruled.

Compact, but incisive book that is well written in an interesting fashion for those just now wishing to learn about all aspects of Castle life, weapons and warfare, but also a handy reference guide to writers working with that period.

Highly recommended WISE WRITERS AND READERS History Pick.

This is like an Encyclopedia of British Castles!
I bought a used version... 1983 printing, 249pages, 5.5" by 8" hardcover.

From the cover: "A guide to everything there is to know about exploring castles in England, Scotland and Wales." ...Believe it, this book has a glossary of hundreds of details about castles with black & white sketches for most entries.

If you are a castle enthusiast like I am, you will learn a great deal of castle architecture, history, daily life, etc. I keep it by my bed and browse thru it sometimes before I go to sleep.
