The REAL story of Grizzly Bears
A very well written and entertaining book about the Criaghead's multi year study of the Grizzly Bears of the Yellowstone Eco system. The book while written by a Biologist, is very entertaining and an easy (light) read....not a scientific paper.

If you want to understand what Grizzly Bears are REALLY like, and want to understand this interesting animal- this is your book.

It's a great book to read if you visit the Yellowstone area and are somewhat "Bear-a-phobic" as a result of the sensational bear attack books. I was reading this book in Yellowstone this summer when I had my 1st bear incident in the 15 years I have been coming to the park. Armed with good information the "incident" became an interesting encounter with another one of YNP's great animals.

This is a book worth buying and keeping in your library.

Trial of the Century: People of the State of California Vs. Orenthal James Simpson

The BEST book about the Simpson Trial
Without a doubt, Schmalleger's "Trial of the Century: People of the State of California vs. Orenthal James Simpson" is the best book ever written about this trial. Two essential points must be made.

First, the intended audience of this monograph is criminal justice students. Schmalleger thought that students could learn court and legal concepts by employing the Simpson trial. This is a brilliant strategy. For example, students will learn and will not forget concepts such as "evidence," "direct evidence" and "circumstantial evidence."

Second, when one is finished reading this book, one will understand why OJ was found not guilty. The reason is simple, but not obvious. Much of the book includes court transcripts. We actually read the exact words of the lawyers and the judge. This is the real eye-opener. OJ did NOT win because of the "race card." He won because his lawyers (F. Lee Bailey, Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, Alan Derchowitz, Carl Douglas, Peter Neufeld, Barry Scheck, and Gerald Uelmen) were much more competent than the prosecutors (Gill Garcetti, Marcia Clark, Christopher Darden, and Hank Goldberg).

Reading the transcript is much better than hearing the words. With the written word, the reader has an opportunity to analyze the sentence structure and understand the power of the words being used. Simply stated the defense were better orators than the prosecutors. The defense had command of the English language and the prosecutors did not.

My conclusion from reading this book: If OJ had an all white OBJECTIVE jury, he would have been acquitted. It was not the evidence; it was the manner in which the evidence was presented. Evidence was presented within the context of the spoken word and the prosecutors -- particularly Christopher Darden and Marcia Clark -- were seriously lacking.

There are many other books written about the OJ Trial. These include "Without a Doubt" by Marcia Clark and "In Contempt" by Christopher Darden. The central theme of these publications is "blaming." Neither Clark nor Darden would take responsibility for their incompetence as prosecutors.

Another book by Vincent Bugliosi is entitled "Outrage: The Five Reasons Why O.J. Simpson Got Away With Murder." Bugliosi also includes transcript pieces, but interjects his opinion. Schmalleger has an opinion but does NOT share it with the reader. He forces the reader to come to his or her own conclusion: OJ didn't win, Clark and Darden lost.

Insights on some interesting neotropical bird species.
This may be Skutch's last book--the culmination of seven decades of careful observation of hundreds of bird species. Here he has selected some very interesting neotropicals and offers his own detailed, thoughtful insights into their habits, often citing other sources to round out the reader's appreciation of his subjects. His narrative style is objective yet personal--spoken as though he were standing right next to you while birding together. This book deserves a place in your library. It is a wonderful reference source as well as a good read. Skutch is truly a master and this is another important contribution to his body of excellent work.

A Magnificent Exploration of Vintage Trolleys
While there are a number of books about streetcars and interurban trains of the past, few come as close to putting readers around and onboard them as this book does. Its modern-day, color photography of these vintage rail cars -- all preserved at rail museums around North America and Britain -- is nothing short of stunning.

Grouped into chapters by historical era and car type, each featured car is profiled in a one or two-page spread containing a wonderful balance of words, statistics and photos. Combined, each chapter and profile allows readers not only to understand the history behind each car and its use, but also appreciate the details of each car's design and craftsmanship, right down to the brass controller handles, stained glass windows, and sleek curvatures.

Covering everything from the 19th-Century horsecar predessesors of the trolley right through to the streamlined PCCs and Liverpool "Liners" that represented the end of the classic trolleycar era; this book is bound to satisfy both the serious urban rail enthusiast or historian, and anyone wanting to see what trolleys were like. If you enjoy the magic of trolleys, or the wonder of history vividly come to life in the present day, "Trolleycars" belongs in your hands!

Informative and empowering
This book explores the dynamics of both harmful (abusive and neglectful) and therapeutic (specially-trained adoptive and foster) family environments. Disturbed children can be helped to develop more productive and satisfying relationships, the authors suggest, through the efforts of foster and adoptive parents working in the home environment, aided by the support, encouragement, and resources of the professionals on the team.

Most of the book is concerned with therapeutic intervention, based on four goals: Manage acting out behavior; assist the child in becoming conscious of negative expectations of others; help the child develop constructive interpersonal skills; increase positive interactions between the parent and child. Delaney and Kunstal are clear there are no magic or immediate "cures." Their "unconventional" strategies (examples rather than prescriptions) attempt to discourage power struggles, create new opportunities for both the parent and the child, and encourage small successes in order to help motivate foster and adoptive parents to keep trying.

This book, coupled with Fostering Changes (a previous book by the same author), should be required reading for foster and adoptive parents and caseworkers. It is informative and empowering.

Trucks of the Wehrmacht : A Photo Chronicle
This book covers the Wehrmacht supply organization and the trucks used within the German military during WWII. There are hundreds of photos detailing domestic, foreign, and captured types. There are also other sections, such as marking and painting. As a modeler, this book was very helpful to me as far as technical details and illustrating numberous types and uses.
