i learned from this book.
The book starts out with an autobiography written by Renee, who suffers from schizophrenia. She recaps terrifying moments in her life and her writing is very vivid. After her story, her analyst, who authors the book, explains Renee's condition in more technical terms and does a very good job of this. For anyone interested in learning more about schizophrenia, this would be a good place to start.

Ballet: A Decade of Endeavour

Dance in Europe and America
The "decade" of the title refers to the ten year period just after WWII. Dance-wise, it was a most dynamic decade, both on stage and screen. Especially in war torn England this was noticeable. It is a well known fact that for various reasons, all kinds of entertainment thrive during times of unrest. A.H. Franks, eminent British ballet authority, has assembled a great number of critics, directors, editors amd authors, such as Arnold L. Haskell, Lillian Moore, Marie Rambert, Ninette de Valois, Clive Barnes, etc. Especially the contribution by Donald Wray is witty and sarcastic, page 193. What he has written about ballet critics in general is a gem.

noticeable.

An inspirational story
At first glance, this is very similar to the run of SAS memoirs. The struggles with passing the rigorous selection course, early training and the missions. Frank Collins, like most of the other authors, left the SAS as a sergeant, on the way having been the youngest member of the team that stormed the Iranian Embassy at Princes Gate. Most of the SAS books though finish when their authors leave. In a way this is where Frank Collins' starts as he finds religion in the SAS and leaves to become a priest. Becoming born again seems to be relatively common in the US armed forces but is much less so in the UK. He eventually ends up as SAS regimental chaplain.

CAPITAL BASEBALL
This book is an excellent visual record of Washington baseball in it's own right but is outstanding as a companion piece to Tom Deveaux's The Washington Senators, 1901-1971 (a top notch history containing no pictures). It's great to put a face to a name from a bygone era. This book is chock full of historical photos (all b&w) that extend beyond just the Senators. After all this glowing praise, why do I rate it only 4 stars? I received it a week before Ted Williams' passing. In going back through it a week later, I was struck at the gloss job that the expansion Senators (1961-1971) received. At 14 pages (out of 128), the Senators of my youth are barely represented here. One photo each of Ted Williams and Frank Howard? Reprehensible!!! Hondo isn't even given an action photo (of him crushing another homer) but a tame head shot. Sort of reminds me of James R. Hartley's Washington's Expansion Senators (1961-1971). All in all, a must have that could have been so much better.

Good for what its called
Although good, but very BASIC guide to decathlon. If you're envolved in Track & Field already, 99.9% chance is that you already know 99% of what this book is talking about; things such as common injuries, basic nutrition needs, what to bring with you to the meet, training with (a) partner(s) is better than alone, implements needed for decathlon (shot, discus, javeline...)...etc

As far as training, this book gives you a BASIC, sample, two-week split for traing 10 events.

You may learn some history of the event however; Find out how top U.S.A. decathletes were introduced to the event.

The part I found most useful for myself, is the scoring tables. Gives you an idea of what performances in each event will lead to a world class score.

Bottom line, this book is good, but VERY BASIC. Good for encouraging future decathletes, and gives you an idea of what its all about. If you're looking for a serious traing guide - look elsewhere.

A historical overview with future research possibilties
Any reader looking to learn more about the history behind interest group formation will appreciate this detailed, highly engaging book. The authors do an excellent job of laying out their ideas and backing up their opinions. What most impressed me about the book was the final chapter, where the authors went on to recommend ways political science researchers could achieve more coherence in the varied approaches to studying interest groups. This was a adept way to pull together the rest of the book and I only wish I was looking for a way to conduct research in this evolving field!

Step into a mythological world...
After reading this book, I just HAD to rave about it! I have never read anything so interesting, yet in a factual way. McHargue does an excellent job of describing the mytholical beasts of never as though they really existed - their appearance, habits, and life. It also discussed the possible originations of the myth, and some of the great stories that they were involved in. I highly recommend this book to any fan of mythological tales!

The beer drinker's companion

Putting Beer in Historical and Social Context
This book, small enough to fit in one's pocket, contains everything a writer, beer aficionado, anthropologist or historian needs to gain a quick study in the life of beer throughout our history as a species. Focusing mainly on the literary and social impact of beer (and those determined to stamp it out - the first prohibitionists in sumeria, for example), the book provides a wonderful reference for those who are ready to move beyond today's limited cultural books on beer.

Best American Screenplays (First Series)

Authors: Sam Thomas and Frank Capra
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $10.95

Useful collection of classic screenplays.
The screenplays in this collection range from golden age to relatively modern. They include:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Meet John Doe
Casablanca
Miracle on 34th Street
Rebel Without a Cause
Bonnie and Clyde
The Graduate
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Sounder
On Golden Pond
Arthur
The Candidate

It's also worth reading for the very entertaining and useful foreward by Frank Capra. Beware of only one thing: the typeface in this book is very tiny and takes some getting used to.

Worthwhile book for students of film and screenwriting.

Enjoyable paperback
Frank O'rourke, the author, does an excellent job of developing the four main characters -- True Benton, Jan Schmidt, Colonel DeLight and his daughter, Celia. Good storyline that moves along. "Big 50" was my first O'rourke paperback, but will probably not be my last.
