Many thanks to the author.
I have no appropriate adjective that describes how happy and grateful I am (as well as my in-laws) upon reading this book. We are sure that anybody who reads this book will find it so simple and easy to understand. When applied you will be blessed with minimized trips to the doctor. How I wish I'd read this earlier so I would not have spent and worried about my husband's dry skin condition. Anyway I'll lend this book to my friends and relatives to help them too.

It really works!
Believe me these secrets work. Teh foods we need to eat-seasonings we use can prolong life, exercising, all help. I find every paragraph important and needful. Before trying these remedies, I felt listless, tired, nervous, swelling legs & feet. Natural Healing Secrets has caused all this to change. I'd had two slight strokes, before I decided I'd better stop and listen to Proven Remedies. If we go by the book, I believe we not only live longer but be healthful and "jolly" feel good.

Help for the whole family can be found in this book!
In the past year my family has spent well over $600 which could have been saved had I known about this book sooner! My husband's dry, cracked feet were a real problem until I found the solution for healing them in this book. My son suffered terribly from allergies until I read how to "attack the menace in his bed" and "find the solution in his bottom drawer" to his stuffed-up nose. My daughter and I are losing weight eating the foods suggested, and I no longer endure severe bouts of hiccups. This book is "just what the doctor ordered" and goes with me everywhere as a reference.

A book I can personally relate too
Excellent book! Some events bring me back to my childhood years growing up in the Bay area.

A Pleasure To Read
I love the essays of Frank Chin. I just wished that the editor would put in "Racist Love" in this anthology. Anyway, this book is a treat because you'll have a commentary of Sun Tzu's ART OF WAR. Over and over again I've heard Chin mention how well ART OF WAR reflects Asian thinking. Well, it's now available to you guys, written by Frank Chin himself!

Yes
This book is a work of art. I loved every page of it. Thank you Mr. Chin

Excellent British Police Procedural
A rather bleak, but very good book. CANDLES centers around the murder of a woman victimized by three separate assaults on the last day of her life. And she had endured a lot of misery before that, too. DCI Luke Paget, coping with the imminent third anniversary of his wife's death, investigates, assisted by a whole lot of other coppers. There's an incident room coordinator, various sergeants, criminologists, and many other police personnel. I enjoyed the depiction of these characters' work roles and relationships, and found the book excellent, well-plotted, and very well-written. Smith's FATAL FLAW is also terrific.

another excellent Inspector Paget mystery
Candles for the Dead is a wonderfully written British police procedural that had me guessing until the very end. Smith is a very talented author, (Fatal Flaw and Stone Dead are good reads as well), and I can't wait for the next Inspector Paget mystery to arrive.

Excellent Paget entry
Everyone involved in the investigation seems a bit stunned by the murder weapon and the location of the crime scene. Someone used a candlestick to pound widow Beth Snakewood to death inside the St. Justin Chapel. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Paget and his junior partner Sergeant John Tregalles investigate the brutal slaying.

The problem confronting the two police officers is that the victim seems to have several individuals who have strong motives to kill her. Her former peer on the job is obviously jealous of Beth's recent promotion, which he feels she gained through her figure rather than her figuring. Her boss raped but promoted Beth. The woman's violent son loses his control very quickly. Then there is the unknown person who tipped the police off on many of their early inquiries. The only thing the two cops know is that they have their work cut out for them if they want to identify the killer.

CANDLES FOR THE DEAD, the third Paget mystery (see FATAL FLAW and STONE DEAD) is an invigorating village cosy who-done-it that will grip readers from start to finish. The investigation takes center stage in the engaging story line. However, a subplot involving Paget's personal life adds much depth to the tale. Frank Smith provides fans of the regional (outside London) British police procedural sub-genre with a fast-paced, old fashion, but enjoyable detective story.

Valuable tools in a well written book
It is well-written, clear, and extremely USEFUL. And it is very easy to use.

The book clearly presents how to create a powerful career portfolio and market yourself effectively. Very valuable tools presented in a well-written book made this one of my best Amazon buys of the year.

A must have

It offers easy to read, true to life examples of what it is really like when your out looking for a job or promotion. City of Lingering Splendour: A Frank Account of Old Peking's Exotic Pleasures

Time Travel !
If the name John Blofeld means anything to you, you've probably been consulting the I Ching. Blofeld wrote a popular translation to the Chinese oracle at a time when the only other version available in English was Richard Wilhelm's groundbreaking but somewhat turgid text.

"City of Lingering Splendor" is an autobiographical travelogue, one of the best ever written. Dedicated to ' the hermits, scholars, youths and courtesans who inspired these pages ' it's a love letter to Peking and the breathtaking greatness of an ancient civilisation at its twilight, about to be extinguished.

While remote jungles still offer anthropologists the chance to chew the fat with stone age peoples, the romantics among us are simply out of luck. Until someone invents a working time machine, Ancient Egypt is gone forever along with Homer's Greece and Imperial Rome.

But in 1934 it was still possible to travel back in time. Back to Old China, to a culture that had remained virtually untouched for thousands of years---and chew Peking Duck with Taoist sages. . .

Wonderful reading.

A Gentle Masterpiece of Lingering Splendour
I had no idea when I picked up this book that I had such a pleasant experience in store for me. Beginning in 1934, a young man in his twenties spends "three exquisitely happy years" in a China at the edge of the abyss. Japan had already invaded Manchuria and made no secrets of its intentions of further conquest. The shaky Chinese Republic was ruled out of Nanking; and Peking was still full of memories of the old Dowager Empress, the last of her line.

The streets of Peking were full of Confucian scholars, aging palace eunuchs, adepts of Taoism and Buddhism, starving White Russian refugees, 14-year-old opium addicts, and gentle courtesans and flute girls. Blofeld threw himself headfirst into this world which was on the point of being snuffed out forever. Most memorable are the White Russian hermaphrodite Shura and the Rasputin-like Father Vassily; the decorous Buddhist scholar Dr Chang; Yang Taoshih, the Taoist sage, and his friend known only as the Peach Garden Hermit; the lovely courtesan Jade Flute; and the mysterious Pao, who elopes with a young girl intended for a Japanese colonel.

After Blofeld leaves for a trip to England, the Japanese finally invade. There are two bittersweet chapters at the end where Blofeld revisits the scenes of his youth after 1945. His fragile Peking of the 1930s is now poised between a growingly thuggish Kuomintang secret police and the great unknown of Mao Tse-tung's Eighth Route Army.

Blofeld's Dr Chang says it all: "Decay is inherent in all things, as Shakyamuni Buddha bade us always remember. Death swallows all that has been born; rebirth or re-creation follow in their turn, as spring follows winter. Things rise and wane in unceasing flux."

CITY OF LINGERING SPLENDOUR is recommended to all sentient beings who were ever young once and are now faced with a confused welter of possibilities, none of which seem particularly appetizing.

Ah - the good old days and the good old writers.
This is the most sensitive, respectful and intelligent book I have read on traditional Chinese culture. The writing is terrific, on a par with Peter Fleming's, though more from the heart.

It records the author's love affair with the city before WW2 (and includes a return to Beijing after it). While meeting many of its remaining Daoist, Confucianist, Bhuddist and literary leaders and exploring its temples, nightlife and food, we get a last sympathetic, philosophical, tragic glimpse of the splendour decaying under the Republic. Before it vanished under the Maoists.

If you thought there was little more to pre-War China than footbinding, Dowager Empresses, opium and Shanghain greed and degeneracy, this book will even the score a little.

Forgotten Hero
When I picked up this book I did not know who Buddy Edelen was. This is right up there with the best running biographies I have read. If you love a good sports biography, whether you are a runner or not, pick this up. GREAT READ!

The poetry of long distance running
What I found so amazing in Frank Murphy's work is his lyrical skill that makes this non-fiction book read like a wonderful tale.

Historical accuracy and insightful exploration of personal determination give a clear psychological landscape of the kind of athlete that put long distance running on the map of today's sports.

A must read not only for long distance runners, but for poets as well.

This book covers the essence of the long distance competitor
This is about One of the premier runners in American history yet he is relatively unkown. He prefered the relative solitude and training methods that are now employed by the great Kenyan runners before anyone knew of Kenyan runners. This book is a highly motivational book for anyone training to run a serious marathon yet it would be good for a beginning runner also. Buddy Edelen was a class runner who didn't need drugs or "aids" to set a world record in 1963. I have personally read this book at least 10 times and will no doubt continue to read it.

Inexhaustible - a special book
There are very few stories that can make you just want to sit for a while after you've finished them. You're not sure if you're happy or sad: they just fill your body and you need to sit for a while because you know something special has just gone through you. Maybe they have a way of looking at the world that's just somehow more right than anything you've come across before. Chekhov's "The Bishop" is a story that does that for me, and Salinger's "For Esme, With Love and Squalor." A couple of others.

It's not that they make you happy, exactly, but they give you a sense that life is a more worthwhile thing than you might have felt before, stranger and more full. Frank O'Connor has more stories that give me that feeling than any other writer I've read in English - The Drunkard, My Oedipal Complex, The Mad Luceys, The Ugly Duckling, Don Juan's Temptation. He gave me the same feeling I got when I read Tolstoy and Chekhov for the first time: this guy is onto something: he knows the secret, and if I just read closely enough I'll figure it out too. Well, no luck yet - but each time I read one of O'Connor's stories I feel like everything around me is both more sensible and more mysterious than it used to seem, which is possibly all the answer any book is going to give.

Ireland's Premier Short Story Teller
The tradition of the Irish story teller has been reborn in this century in her marvelous short story writers. None was finer than Corkman, Frank O'Connor. All of O'Connor's classic stories are here. O'Connor truly captures Irish life in the early part of this century. The wit and humor that are legendary among Corkmen is present throughout this book. This is one of my favorite books ever. I have given it as a gift too many times to count. Every person that I gave it to came back raving about it!

The best short-story teller of his generation
Frank O'Connor is likely our time's and our language's best at telling the short story. Don't miss "First Confession" or "The Drunkard."

You don't have to be Irish to recognize the pattern and rhythm of life and speech in his stories. They capture a place and time perfectly, but yet transcend the confinements of culture or period.

BUY THIS BOOK
This is a CLASSIC reference book on Revolutionary War artifacts!
This one first came out around the time of the bicentennial, and has set the standard from day one. With photographs of original (and in some cases, excavated) and reproduction equipment, this book is a gold mine of information. Where photographs are not available, black and white line drawings by George Woodbridge fill the gap. Woodbridge is one of the BEST illustrators of military subject matter. He captures the details that matter.
Members of the Brigade of the American Revolution were used to further display everyday items used by 18th century soldiers. Museum curators, reenactors, collectors, illustrators and makers of reproduction equipment MUST HAVE THIS BOOK on their shelves.
My only criticism ? Color photos and exact measurements would have been nice. ...

The best book written on Revolutionary War artifacts.
George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic have really done it this time. Hands down this is the best book written on artifacts of the American Revolution. From A to Z you can look up nearly anything that was used in the War For Independence. Great for amateurs and pros alike it is an indispensable reference tool especially with museums and private collections. Very popular with online auctions as this book is referred to often. Great photographs that are clear with a brief description of every item. Some of these artifacts are now on display at Valley Forge. For collectors and historians alike this work is unparalleled and for over 20 years has been the "bible" for collecting artifacts of the American Revolution. No other work has come close. Highly recommended.

Excellent for re-enactors!
This book is an alphabetically organized list of hundreds of artifacts from the Revolutionary War, with photos of everything listed. Each item is described in detail, from powder horns to clothing to medical instruments. If you are a re-enactor of this period and you don't have this book, get it!

Straight to the point
Forget the emotional posing and the masturbatory use of the "method" in today's actors and acting teachers. Doug gets right to the point and gives you the raw, essential tools provided by the Stanislavski/Strasburg Method. Stop letting the "feelings" of attention-seeking actors confuse you. Great tools are to be found in this book.

This Is the Actor's Bible!!!
I have heard so much about this book. Well, now I finally got it and I am mad that I waited so long. Every time I pick it up I learn something from it. I re-read it all the time. I am learning sense memory in my acting class and I use the book and my teacher say "great!" but I know I got it from the book. I love that it's so clear. That is awesome. So far I have bought 3 of them, 1 for me and 2 for presents. This is a must have book.

Clear, Concise and Funny
A student from Yale had this book and that made me curious so I bought it. I have studied with some really good acting teachers but this book has made an incredible difference in my understanding of the craft of acting. Professor Moston's discussion of issues like sense memory, collusion, objectives, character and other Method and non-Method acting styles are really wonderful. I don't think anyone can learn acting from a book, but if you could, this would be the book to do it. I like how Moston gives you a fast answer and then, if you want to learn more, you can read the entry and get where the term came from, how it came about, and what's really great, how to use the idea in your acting. Also, I carry it in my backpack and I've even used it to settle arguements. Check it out!
