The best there is on Postmodernity
Trying to explain Postmodernity/Postmodernism is a tricky issue at the best of times. David Lyons makes it easy to understand and makes the very complex issues surrounding Postmodernity and Postmodernism very accessible and understandable. In Postmodernity, David Lyon provides an easy to grasp introduction to this highly controversial body of work and situates thinkers within and throughout the - excuse the pun - discourse of Postmodernity. My understanding of the Postmodern has grown in leaps and bounds has benefited greatly thanks to this book. I recommend it highly.

A fascinating foray into 19th century solar technology
This book tells an amazing story -- that of solar powered steam engines, great BIG ones -- on the banks of the Nile in Egypt before the First World War. Who would have thunk it?

The writing is gripping and reads like an Indiana Jones adventure yarn -- this isn't a textbook. And yet, though told like a story, this is nonfiction, and all this stuff really happened. The author points out that the science stories we remember widely from the 19th century, like those of Edison and Marconi, are those that impact our lives today. The story of solar power a century ago has been forgotten because most of us dismiss solar as a marginal technology, one that doesn't (or maybe can't) have a big impact on our lives. That view appears to be changing.

The writer traces the practical applications of solar power technology back to the Greeks and takes us through the 'burning mirrors' of the Middle Ages, but the main focus of the story is on an American entrepreneur who, having made millions from patenting safety devices as a young man, devoted the rest of his life to building huge solar-powered steam engines -- machines he believed could supply most of the energy the world would need in the 20th century.

Solar-powered steam fell into the doldrums during after World War I, but now it is experiencing a revival. There are solar-powered steam plants in California and Spain today (one in Barstow here in CA, which I have seen myself) that can produce 12 megawatts, enough to power 10,000 houses, and it appears that solar powered steam may give PV a run for its money in some locations.

This was a great read. I couldn't put it down.

exactly as described
After finding some coins I was really puzzled about identifying them. I purchased two other books but found them to be of only partial use. This book helps you to understand some of the history behind the markings, which in turn makes it much easier to remember what you've read. I also found the pictures and sketches to be very useful in practical identification.

An excellent book for the safety professional
This book contains 17 chapters that define basic concepts of loss control in an informative, easy to read format. The strength of this book was the author's straight forward practical approach to loss control leadership. An effective methodology to implementation, with a motivating style of writting made this my most popular book in OH&S to date. This book is one of the few that have also become a permanant addition to my reference library. The books weakness was that it did not cover the historical aspects in great detail (a weakness that may reflect the reviewers interests). The book was a text used at British Columbia Institute of Technology for it's OH&S program.

Excellent practical book for beginners or advanced.
This book is very effective in leading a reader/learner from elementary mathematical ideas to practical to more advanced shop applications. Starting with basic calculator operation, the book moves to precise mathematical/trigonometric calculations needed in the machine shop. Ample sample illustrations and practice problems give sound reinforcement to the learning. Further, this book can almost be used as a self-directed learning project. I have used the book with students who are behind in grade level and with others who are more accelerated: both found the material comprehensive and useful and advanced easily from their present level to higher levels. The book is especially good for bringing below level performers up to par. As a college level teacher of technical education and as a coordinator of vocational programs and training, I highly recommend this book for use in trade, vocational, junior college, and even high school settings.

Fabulous Prayer Book
This is a wonderful resource, clear, simple, but with great depth. It is very valuable in bringing to mind many female biblical characters who are often forgotten. I use it in my daily private prayers but it would also be extremely useful as a liturgical resource in many settings. Mary Louise Bringle's hymns are beautiful and can easily be set to well-known hymn tunes. I would love to find a larger collection of her texts. My gratitude goes to both Ms. Bringle and J. Frank Henderson for compiling and publishing this volume. I hope they do more.

Great Reference, Highly Educational
This book is an excellent overview of the various stages an electronic file goes through between design and print. It is not written so much as a "how-to" preflight book but rather as a "what to avoid and why" reference. Each chapter deals with a specific preflight issue, such as Vector and Bitmap Images, Fonts, PostScript, DPI, File Formats, Collecting the Pieces, etc. Anyone wishing to peer into the workflow of a prepress department will get a great education on WHY electronic files must conform to certain restrictions and what happens if they don't. Mr. Muir uses flowcharts and simple but clear illustrations to demonstrate his points. He also includes comprehensive preflight checklists, overviews of the various preflight software packages available today, and an introduction to PostScript errors and how to deal with them. His writing style is highly informational without being wordy. It would serve as an excellent reference book for both content creators and service providers, and would be highly educational for anyone even remotely involved in digital output. END

Wonderful Reference
This is a wonderful reference book for information concerning 20th century artists. Included is biographical data, main exhibitions, and the character of the work. The primary focus is Western Europe and the USA, although, a few artists from Latin America and Japan are included. I would agree with all of the nice things that the editorial review says. This is the most complete and up-to-date reference for this type of information. My only disappointment was in the extensive bibliography that is not that helpful to me, primarily because I don't read all those languages.

A Touching and Moving Account
I was engrossed with Pretty Shields story from the moment it began. It was wonderful to read of a native woman's life, before "the buffalo went away". Life then was simpler and so full of joy, as well as so many hardships, but the spirit that is brought across is inspiring and uplifting. A wonderful and engrossing read from beginning to end. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in Native studies, feminism, or simply life, before we came along.
