Age-Appropriate Mystery Fun
My son and I read this book together. It kept us guessing to the end. More amazing than that, it kept his attention throughout. He actually asked me to sit down and read with him, so he could learn how the case came out. Like in other books in the series, elementary-age Frank and Joe Hardy work with their friends to solve a mystery and help a friend in need. In this case, they help a magician regain his good reputation by discovering who stole the latest Jimmy Han flick during the magician's show. References to magic and karate wrapped up in a mystery make a great story for young readers.

A practical set of rules for a new project manager
This is a book that I wish I had 10 years ago when I was starting out managing major business development projects - the checklist model is sound and works to cut away risks.
It has an engineering bias but can be refocused to business development - but this requires some existing experience of project management to secure the maximum benefit.
If there is a negative, the book is a little thin - both in size and in business examples.
It is worth a place in a serious project manager type of business role.

A Great Feast
This book gives a great representation of folktales from all parts of Africa. These tales highlight the variety of the people and societies on the continent, helping to correct the notion of Africa being one big country. While stylistically consistent, the themese touched in the book speak of sophistication. From epics to simple "lesson" tales, Mr. Abrahams has done a great job laying out the stories. His introduction is also superb, though for some reason two stories he mentions in his introduction are not to be found in the book itself. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for the "real folk," and not simply beddy time stories (though some stories here could be used for that too!)

The beginning of the attack on Alexander
A good examination of the means and motives for Alexander of Makedon's conquest and colonization of Bactria. This is best read as the prequel to his excellent "Thundering Zeus : The Making of Hellenistic Bactria." Recommended.

Tells the rest of Canton's story
Frank Canton was sheriff of Buffalo, Wyoming in the 1880s and during the Johnson County War. Later he was a Deputy US Marshal in Oklahoma Territory, rising to high rank in Oklahoma law enforcement. He wrote an autobiography titled "Frontier Trails" that is a classic of western adventure about his life as a western lawman. Only, Frank Canton completely left out a significant part of his life history--his real name was Joe Horner and he was a convicted bank robber and murderer from Texas who had escaped from prison.
Alias Frank Canton fills in the blanks Canton left in his story, and does it very well. The reading was interesting and appeared to have been very well researched.

A new Bill Bryson on the block?
I'm a great fan of travel writers, especially ones who make me laugh, like Bill Bryson and Pete McCarthy. I've never heard of Frank Nelson before but he sure made me laugh. This book covers a lot of ground, from New Zealand to New England to old England, with a few other stops along the way. I think Nelson is originally English. Anyway he certainly has that dry British sense of humor while also (like Bryson and McCarthy) a sharp eye for the ridiculous things all around us in everyday life. In addition to all the laughs, this tale of two ordinary people just roaming the world year after year makes fascinating reading. I'm envious!

Case closed (apparently).
Gerold Frank's "An American Death" is one of those hard-to-put-down books about the assassination of Martin Luther King. This was the first book I had read about King's assassination. I didn't know much about the killing other than that James Earl Ray was the purported killer. Frank does give ample time to all elements of the story - a) that JE Ray acted alone b) that JE Ray was framed c) that JE Ray was willingly duped by others d) that JE Ray never fired the gun. However, Frank slowly shows us how the evidence does mount against Ray as being the lone gunman. The book does an adequate job of suggesting and proving that no one else but Ray was the killer. I was very impressed with the book and its conclusions. However, I have a copy of a newspaper article that appeared in the May, 2000 edition of the Houston Chronicle. It said that Loyd Jowers, who ran Jim's Grill, testified in 1993 that he hired someone else other than JE Ray to kill MLK and that King's murder was a plot conceived by a late Italian-American Memphis produce merchant. This was alluded to in Frank's book (page 173) but nothing more was said of it. So...what can one really conclude? Nevertheless, "An American Death" is quite excellent and worth a read.

Good American Heritage textbook
I used this book for my American Heritage class at BYU. It's a great book to learn about a little of everything from the social studies. It teaches good basics about American History, Economics, and Political Science. I'm going to get another one to review from time to time.
