Hearts of Darkness: The European Exploration of Africa

The Kirkus review accurately describes this book
The first 30 pages are dry: too much description of traveling, not enough of personalities and adventures - at first. But stick with it. As pages and chapters go by, it gets fascinating. I got a real feel of what it was like to be on a safari of discovery and a real sense of the social environment of the times. This is not a child's book of wonder, however. It is a true picture of the men and their times, including the horrors of traveling where there were no resources we take for granted today. The author describes the illnesses, many awful and incurable, the head porters, the slave trade, and how the explorers brought some economic destruction for the tribal cultures in their wake. If you have an interest in how Africa was opened up to European awareness and exploration, this is a good beginning, general book.

Close To Definitive
Carlos Baker is generally known as the founding father of Hemingway biographical studies. His 1969 biography, "Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story" is the so-called "authorized" Hemingway bio and it was the first book of its kind to explore the author's life. All subsequent biographers owe a great deal to Baker and the seven years he spent producing "Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story."

Calling Baker's bio the definitive bio of Ernest Hemingway is difficult though for several reasons. First of all, being published in 1969, the book is now outdated to a great degree. Second of all, a slew of other biographies have been published since 1969 and some are very formidable. Baker's book, in my humble opinion, is probably the most tediously researched biography of Hemingway. His "Notes" section is just over 100 pages.

If I had to recommend one standard Hemingway biography, I would likely choose "Hemingway: A Biography" by Jeffrey Meyers. I have read many Hemingway biographies and in comparing them, the work of Meyers does stand out. He offers details not present in other bios and provides fine commentary on EH's literature. Meyers gets as close to definitive as I think one can come in a single book.

Henry King Director: From Silents to Scope
Published in Paperback by Directors Guild of Amer (February, 1996)
Authors: Henry King, David Shepard, Ted Perry, and Frank Thompson
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

A talented movie director for 50 years.
Frank Thompson has re-edited some interviews with silent-film director Henry King into chronological order. King talks of his days as an actor, and then a silent film director. In the 1930's he moved to the Fox studios and directed many good films (including some classics such as THE GUNFIGHTER [1950]). King talks about Daryl Zanuck (the mogul at Fox) and many film stars such as Lillian Gish, Ronald Coleman, Gary Cooper, and Gregory Peck. The book has an excellent filmography in the back, plus a few pictures of King throughout the years.

A Good Book
I purchased this book and used it extensively when I was writing up the learningtrip for maximumkids.com. It is well laid out, has a great deal of superb history information, not a little technical help, and plenty of photos. Mr. Perry did a good job on this one.

The history of the states since 1865
this book deals with tha end of the civil war, 1865. you would find how the reconstruction took place, how slavery end, how the people suffer with many changes, how some presidents and government political wasn't all that helpful in restoring the united states in those years of battle. you would get a better understanding on how the presidents and political parties put a stop to those hard times people face, in those day. I use this book for a history class and I really learn about american history.

Wonderful baseball story
This book was about George "Babe" Ruth and Henry Aaron. I think it was a great baseball story about these to players. It really tells a lot about Babe's history where he came from and how he got to the top. the book also tells some about Henry and how he got to the top. I really enjoyed this book!
