The defining of core meaning of what it is to be human
Regaining Consciousness: Resuscitating the Soul by analytically trained psychiatrist Francis Broucek is a unique and compelling analysis of what science has said and tries to say about human consciousness, as well as the essential difference between human thought and the limits of computerized artificial intelligence. A fascinating tour of Darwinian evolutionary theory, speculations on true consciousness within machines, Regaining Consciousness is especially recommended for students of the interplay between contemporary psychology, the creation of artificial intelligence, and the defining of core meaning of what it is to be human.

The X-Files: Regeneration
This is a book of The X-Files episode "Leonard Betts". It is one of the scariest episodes, and the end of it leads to the revelation of Scully's cancer, which is obviously a very important event in the history of The X-Files, as any fan of the show will know. It is also hardback, which I greatly appreciated, and is well worth the money.

All of the lights change colors: Relapse and Recovery
In the detective novel the LONG GOODBYE, by Raymond Chandler, his hard-boiled detective, Philip Marlowe describes recovery from alcoholism as the lights changing colors and drinking friends become less fun and that the process takes 3 years. Raymond Chandler, who had personal experience with alcoholism, had great insight into the processes of relapse and recovery and he would have loved the subject of this review, RELAPSE AND RECOVERY IN ADDICTIONS edited by Frank M. Tims, Carl G. Leukefeld and Jerome J.Platt. Chandler appreciated the truth and RELAPSE AND RECOVERY IN ADDITIONS tells the truth about relapse and recovery. The book is a well balanced and comprehensive volume that sums up the contemporary research on relapse and recovery. As workers in the addictions are aware, the processes of relapse and recovery are complex and multi-determined. Similarly, RELAPSE AND RECOVERY IN ADDICTIONS appreciates the complexity of the task and covers the biological, psychological, social and cultural approaches to understanding, predicting and treating relapse and recovery in addictions. This book is no misguided attempt to seek simple but incorrect solutions but rather a realistic appreciation of the very complex conundrum that is treating addictions. The book provides a clear conceptual framework for understanding relapse and recovery, reviews the extant research on recovery and relapse and also describes the current status of the search for effective interventions. The volume is really quite eclectic in the range and depth of topics addressed, most likely reflecting the good judgment, wide knowledge and very even-handed approach of the editors to scientific findings. Interestingly, the authors who have contributed chapters are leading researchers in the field of addictions and the author list includes such addictions superstars as Robert L. Hubbard, M. Dougles Anglin, George DeLeon, Richard Schottenfeld, Harvey Siegal, Barry S. Brown, Patrick M. Flynn, Thomas R. Kosten and D. Dwayne Simpson, among a number of others. In closing, this book is an exceptional work and is destined to be seen as a contemporary classic and an essential reference for information on relapse and recovery. No serious student or researcher in the addictions should be without this book. I am sure that Raymond Chandler would have purchased a copy and perhaps reading the book would
have helped allow his lights to have changed colors a little quicker.

Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports : How the Major Leagues Respond to Market Conditions

Professional Sports As A Business
Frank P. Jozsa, Jr. and John J. Guthrie, Jr. have written one of the most relevant books of its kind. "Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports", covers the subject of professional sports and how those sports react to market conditions in today's era of big money and demanding fans. From the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers all the way to the expansion Cleveland Browns this book is a must read for anyone involved in the decision making process which may involve the future of a professional sports franchise. People who will benefit from this book includes, but is not limited to, management in the front office of a professional sports franchise, state and local government officials who may be asked to subsidize a franchise or stadium/arena, fans who want to take their knowlege of professional sports to another level, and sports writers who want to be the most knowlegeable in their competitive field of sports reporting. After reading this book all will be able to answer the questions, Why did the Baltimore Colts really move to Indianapolis (in the middle of the night)? Why did the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta? How many NBA teams moved between 1952 and 1973? And most importantly, which sports teams are the most likely to move in the next few years and why? Are tax funded stadiums and arenas a good investment for the taxpayer directly and indirectly? Instead of guessing or taking an emotional stab at these questions you will KNOW the answers. As in any business, you can predict the future to some degree by understanding the forces which come into play by knowing what happened in the past. If you desire to truly understand how professional sports work, then this book is a must read for you. Don't let your competition be the only ones with all the answers. If you like professional sports then this book is a a truly enjoyable read.

An excellent reference to reclaim the stories of women
The work is very well done. In the back are several essays that help the reader to understand why such a book is needed and includes concrete ways to reclaim the stories of biblical women and introduce them to the community.

An excellent treatment of a complex subject
Heidegger's dialogue with Kant is often disparaged from many directions, not least by Heidegger himself. It is one of the virtues of Frank Schalow's splendid new book that the importance of the dialogue with Kant throughout Heidegger's career is thoroughly demonstrated. Schalow shows that rather than being an eccentric sideline, Heidegger's grappling with Kant served to inspire him from the earliest to the latest stages of his thinking. However, Schalow's book is not quite a renewal of Heidegger's dialogue with Kant, but rather he himself attempts a dialogue with Heidegger on those aspects of Heidegger's thought that crop up in his dialogue with Kant. This makes Schalow's book not so much a renewal of the dialogue as an attempt to appropriate it: Schalow intends that his book should "carve an independent path of thinking beyond the explicit reflections of either philosopher" (xiii). Schalow presents Heidegger's treatment of Kant in the context of the development of his philosophy as a whole. Throughout, he demonstrates how important the dialogue with Kant is for Heidegger in his attempt to pose his central questions. But Schalow's treatment of the Heidegger-Kant dialogue is at its most distinctive in his discussion of issues addressed by the subtitle of the book: "Action, Thought, and Responsibility." Schalow tries to clarify the ethical issues that arise out of Heidegger's thinking, without trying to distil some ethical system out of it. In particular, Schalow examines Heidegger's discussion of the connection between freedom and responsibility, while not forgetting the pivotal role that truth plays here. In doing so, Schalow addresses the role of technology here, and also the vexing question of Heidegger's notorious association with the Nazis. Given that Schalow's book covers a great deal of material, one would expect that certain issues are merely touched on. In particular, I would think that those who are sceptical of the role Heidegger's dialogue with Kant played in his thinking would want a discussion of exactly what Heidegger did reject in his dialogue with Kant, and why he rejected it. However, it is a measure of the worth of Schalow's book that while it may not solve all questions, it is at the very least a stimulus to further study.

Reptiles and Amphibians in Captivity

must-have tool for zoo reptile curator or serious breeder
This is one in a series of annually produced inventories of the world's reptiles and amphibians in captivity. About 500 collections, both public and private, are represented, with contact phone numbers and addresses. Great for those looking to pair up specimens or for networking with those who have experience with particular reptile and amphibian species. Sections on longevity and breeding are additional valuable features. Still being produced on an annual basis, so there are more recent versions available.
