How a church and people should spread the gospel
In a highly readable and thought provoking style, Frank Harrington simpy tells it like it ought to be and how it works best. Drawing on his own church's success over a three decade period of growing a mainline protestant church (Peachtree Presbyterian) from a small surburban to a thriving metropolitan church that is the largest and most influencial in the entire Presbyterian demonination, he reveals the timeless bibilcal truths contained in and implored by the bible to assist churches of today to carry out the great commission - to go an spread the gospel unto the ends of the earth. His message is one of spiritual practicality - unwavering in its connectedness to the printed word of the bible, yet loaded with real-world approaches, points to consider and suggestions for any church to apply and develop from. It is an excellent guide with study questions at each chapter conclusion for group or leadership discussion. Dr. Harrington is known for simply raising the essential questions of faith as they apply to real life where we all live out our existance and points. In the book, he points to, but does not force the reader, toward the answers as contained in holy scripture. It is a must-read for growing churches - particularly those of the traditional mainline protestant tradition who want to grow and strangthen their witness in today's world.
Dr. Harrington passed away in 2000, I highly recommend the commerative book that describes his life and contains many of his most moving sermons - "To Comfort, Strengthen and to Guide"

The Text for Mathematical Models of Reality
From discrete to continuous modelling, with many proyects and examples, I like very spacially this book for the undergraduate level. The presentation is very clear, but rigurous, making experience the reader through the models. It focuses on the interpretation and ends with some tools for modelbuilding. For a start of mathematical model understanding of reality this book is specially good, clear and completely well written. Good job Mr. Giordano and Weir! When Hale and Congreve rockets RULED!
This book discusses the development of powder war rockets during the 18th and 19th centuries and their use. A curious footnote to military history, the problems involved with such rockets and the increasing lethality and accuracy of conventional artillery overshadowed them and led to the termination of their use . . . until 20th Century technology improved rocketry. A great book!

Oh see what we cannot say
What has happened to freedom of speech in America? Why are we not publicly and openly debating the self-serving and undeomocratic policies of the Bush administration? Didion, in another fine essay on American life, asks these questions and tries to answer them. This is a fine book for anyone who worries about our nation proceeding out of control in its war for oil and corporate interests. Didion is clear in her concerns about why we have lost our powers of free speech and citizenship. A must read for anyone who cares about this nation.

Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery
Published in Paperback by DC Comics (May, 1998)
Authors: Bob Kahan, Frank Quitely, and Grant Morrison
Amazon base price: $9.00
Average review score:

Secrets of the Universe
Flex Mentallo, in one sense, was a spin-off of Grant Morrison's work on the Doom Patrol. In another, it was a compression of his entire five-year run on the Invisibles shot through a superhero comic.

People who aren't intimately familiar with comic book mythos might be a bit confused, if not outright lost, by the sheer volume of references that give this book a lot of its kick. However, there is still a damn good tale about madness, death, isolation, love, magick, the people we could have been and the people we were.

The fact that Morrison manages to cram this into four short comic books is a testament not only to his skill as a writer, but also to the power of the medium.

Of course, that's all a moot point, because due to copyright issues, this trade will probably never be published. Still, if you can find the individual issues, they are well worth it.

A Delight to the eye and the ear
I discovered Fly in the Cobweb, and Frank Parrish (and Dan Mallett) in a brouse through. "Oh well, you like Brit mysteries, give it a go." So I did. Parrish is a subtle and entrancing writer, and Dan Mallett is as easy going as is Parrish's writing. I do not know whom to compare either with. They both are as different as I can imagine from anything I have read in my 50+ years of reading mysteries. The slow start was almost a "ho-hum, do I really want to go further?" Then, after a few pages, I was hooked. Marvelous. I wish my non-fiction articles could have the character and delight I find in Dan (the rascally character who is a thief with a heart of gold, who has a penchant for getting himself embroiled in the mysteries of "who done it? Not me. But they won't believe me, I'd bettter find out who did!") And he does. The reader moves leisurely through the exquisite details of life in the wooded thickets around the villages in Somewhere in England. Dan and his arthritic mother live in a small cottage in the wood near Somewhere, but all the folk in the vilage know he is the rogue who by all rights should have been hanged long ago. In this particular novel, he is drawn by affection to a quite pretty American who is on a tour of Europe with her Aunt. Those two ladies are attracted to a polyglot bunch of wannabe actors for a fortnight of joint inspiration in an old manor house. Meanwhile, Dan, on one of his midnight jaunts to pilfer the valued silver (of course, he will only sell it because he needs the money to pay for an operation for his widowed mum, who refuses to go the the public health service for service) just happens to witness a murder. And the murderer witnesses Dan witnessing him. This totally is out of character for Dan. Dan is the retiring soul who loves to travel only by bicycle, then walk, so as to blend in with the walls and never be noticed. Then the plot thickens. And thickens. And thickens. I recommend Dan Mallett highly to those who enjoy a circuituous plot, a slow word picture move through the countryside Somewhere in England, and an invitation to come to know the various non-human life forms Dan sees and knows one a first name basis. To this, Parrish has added an exquisite analysis of the inner character and motivations of numbers of folk. I regret this book is out of print. It is, however, worthy of a quest through the out-of-print venues. Frank Parrish provides the reader with fun and frolic, a dash of spoof and mystery, and, oh yes, a restrained romance in the background. A delight worth the quest.

Flying the Old Planes
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (December, 1973)

Used price: $16.95
Collectible price: $25.00

Highly recommended for pilots and others who love airplanes.
Frank Tallman is a pilot's pilot, and this book is written for pilots who respect their aircraft. It's a great mixture of performance analysis, BEAUTIFUL photography, aviation history, and Frank's own personal experiences. Even a little bit of "pilot humor".

The book is organized as a series of "first flight" reports of a variety of early planes, from the 1909 Bleriot and Curtis Pusher, through the dogfighting biplanes of the Great War (Spad, Sopwith, Fokker, Pfaltz...), the 20's and 30's (Ford Trimotor, Spirit of St. Louis...) and finally some great WW II planes (P-40, B-17, B-25, and Corsair).

Frank Tallman has flown them all, and owned most of them. You've seen his group's work in MANY motion pictures over the decades.
