For Pekar fans and people struggling with illness
I found this book interesting since I'm a fan of Pekar's American Splendor series and his appearances on David Letterman's shows (apparently at an end, unfortunately for Pekar, even more unfortunately for Letterman). This book's an in depth look at Pekar's struggle with lymphoma. Given the subject matter, it's probably no surprise that this isn't as amusing as the American Splendor anthologies. But for fans, or for people struggling with illness, it's probably a worthwhile read.

A great book
This is an incredible book. This comic-book remarkably and vividly portrays real lives--some lives torn apart by cancer, and some by war.

I loved this book, and I've read it twice, several years apart.

The second time I read it, something "hit me over the head" that hadn't struck me before. That's probably because since my first reading, I've done extensive research on the relationship between cancer and IGF-1 in dairy foods. (I've collected the full-text of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles while co-authoring a book on rBGH.) Upon this reading of Our Cancer Year, I noticed that dairy figured prominantly among mentioned foods in the book. Most readers of this review will view this paragraph as more quack than quirk, but I invite serious-minded researchers to check out PubMed for "IGF-1" (found in cow's milk) and "neoplasms," for instance. This book was written before rBGH was introduced into cows, which has resulted in even higher levels of the IGF-1 hormone in our diet.

Another thing that struck me while re-reading this is that people are still killing each other in the Middle East, even this many years later. Not surprising, I guess, but tragic, nevertheless. I admire Joyce B. for her challenging peace work. And I admire Harvey P. for this honest, insightful portrayal of their struggle with cancer.

I think the artist did a fine job, too. An all-around great book, whether you've had cancer or not. (I have not.)

Fine Work
A fine work of autobiography. Understand, however, that Harvey is critical of everything, himself included, and his unflinching eye depicts his personal agony alongside the state-of-the-world at the time. As in many of his extended works, Harvey uses his story to get up on a soap-box, but if you think of his comics as an extension of his life, you might be begining to appreciate what he really is. Harvey IS his stories.

I was struck by the relationship between Harvey and his wife Joyce: if there is a better depiction of the difficulty in love in the midst of illness, I don't know it. Their relationship is loving and it touched me deeply.

Older XSL spec covered
The book covers what seems to be an older spec for XSL (theremust have not been XLST at the time) (the book published in thebeginning of 98).

The book seems to cover CSS stylesheets quite comprehensively. I do not need to have a deeper knowledge of CSS so I have not read any other books on the subject and cannot compare.

Examples and explanatory text in the book seem a bit difficult to comprehend, especially if browsing. Even when reading carefully it seemed to be more difficult to understand what each example illustrated that other reference books I have read. END

Out of date XSL material
If you are looking for info on XSL, don't stop here. The information in this book is far out of date for the IE5 implementation of XML/XSL.

Professional Style Sheets for HTML and XML
I would like to thank all involved in the creation of Professional Style Sheets for HTML and XML. As a new developer in Internet development I can frankly say this book is a godsend. From its cutting edge, accurate information, user-friendly writting style to its excellent layout a superb reference.

This time is perhaps one of the most challenging times to enter into Internet development. There is a lot to do managing to stay current while waiting for user agents and software on the web to become 100% standardized jointly and impliment the standards properly. This book gave me a great in-depth look into using CSS and related skills effectively and sure helped smooth out the learning curve.

I was easily able to find answers for on-line formatting control even when I wasn't quite sure what exactly it was I was looking for. This to me is an excellent barometer of how well written a book of this nature is. I can also say that despite having a topic that may lend itself to being a little less than exciting reading, this book was very easy to stick through entire chapters! You just have to get this one folks.

Waste
I was excited to buy this book but very let down when I got it. Don't waste you money.

Good read....if you ignore the opinionated tone....
Mr. Elie has written a book that cuts a wide swathe through the regional barbecue landscape. While some of the information is good, and the book does provide a curious read, the regional nature of barbecue lends to the book's inadequacy. What any student of regional foodways should understand is that food traditions cannot be subject to a single standard. Especially a standard levied by an outsider. Unfortunately, Elie proceeds to "damn" local barbecue joints for their poor food, despite the high regard the restaurant holds in the local community. Mr. Elie's culinary arrogance extends not only to judgments on food, but he extends a patronizing attitude towards many of the people he meets, including a truly offensive treatment of the speech patterns of the Gullah in the SC lowcountry. While a moderately curious read, it will not remain on my shelf.

A trip through barbeque country
This is one great book. I love it so much, I bought another copy "just in case". The writing is superb, the photography is amazing, and from a Q-fanatic with literally hundreds of barbeque books, this one is my very favorite.

Book is misleading
DeSalvo was a victim schizophrenia. He was allegedly coerst by Bailey,George Nassar's solicitor, to confess to the murders. He thought he could provide support to his family with movie and book deals, and he was also a braggart. Additionally, some evidence points to Nassar, the convicted murderer who was DeSalvo's cellmate, as being the Boston Strangler. Nassar called Bailey to speak with DeSalvo. DeSalvo also allegedly maintained a photographic momory and information that he confessed could be found in local newspapers, including some fraudulent facts. DeSalvo's body, as well as the eleventh victim's, Mary Sullivan, were exhumed in 2000. DNA evidence, including 68 samples pulled from Sullivan's corpse, has not been connected to DeSalvo. Boston authorities were withholding information to the families, and lawsuits have been filled. Are the Boston authorities attempting to cover up past mistakes? A more comprehensive book to read is the Boston Stranglers or Casey Sherman's upcoming book, A Rose for Mary: The Hunt for the Real Boston Strangler.

Interesting account of unresolved case
When i first read about this case, several things popped up that were not adequately explained. One is that the women were found with serene expressions on their faces! Does this sound like what one would expect of someone being strangled to death? Another is the general context of 1960s Boston. There were an estimated 24+ organized crime families and in the 1960s the Mclean-Mclaughlin wars broke out. this is speculative, but is it possible that women with fringe ties to these 24+ families were targeted as victims in a mob war? The women need not have been into it , merely on the outer fringes of association with someone who could be tied in some way to a particular family. Why this possibility? The Boston police at first thought they were dealing with multiple or copycat killers because the women were either young or old but not inbetween. If rival organized crime factions were attacking each other by harming innocent women, this might account for multiple assailants as each side retaliates against the other. Then, when the dust settled between warring factions, the public outcry was so great that a whipping boy was needed to quench public thirst for justice. DeSalvo may have been just such a person, given an ultimatum by organized crime or promised his family would be cared for if he confessed. Such a confession would stop further investigation and public concern. Then the sudden stop in violence against women could be pinned on the capture of DeSalvo, giving the impression of a direct link between deSalvo and the stranglings while simultaneously accounting for the idiosyncrasies in his story and the peculiar linkage of Nassar and DeSalvo and Bailey. Another overlooked detail is that a woman who won a beauty pageant was said to have been attacked by the Strangler (page 223-6(?) Frank's book) and lived but never interviewed by the Boston police!!

Let's have a go at those files!
I always wanted to know more about the Boston Strangler, having read about him in other true crime accounts, but never getting the full picture. This book gives a frightening and touching account of Boston in the 60s and the Strangler's unwitting victims. Frank handles brilliantly the chaotic investigation and numerous (but mesmerizing) deadend leads; his reporting of the case and its frustrations is near perfect. By the time I got to DeSalvo's confessions (and the fact that the case has never been brought to trial!) I wanted to roll up my sleeves and spend an all-nighter going through the files to check facts. Not since reading about Jack the Ripper have I been so engaged by an unsolved crime.

Satanisn & bondage
I live in Price County and there is a lot of missing children.
I read the horrifying story of John Weber. I think a lot is missing like details of the Lenz family. I also believe that there were more people involved with Satanism. I don't understand how Emily could be beaten that bad and cut up and the assailant John Weber had no scratches. I do not understand why one person is at fault and the others get away free. I believe Satanism should be exposed to the public for what it is so that people can protect their children from this evil. There have been other cases that involve Satanism that are covered-up.

Did I read the same book as the other reviewers?
For a time, I lived in Wisconsin & now live in a heavily wooded
area like the scenes in this book. I am an avid reader of the True
crime genre. Yes, John Ray was a "nut case" and his family
& shrinks should have acted on his problems years before. But I
had a hard time slogging through this book as every mundane detail of
police procedure is detailingly catalogued - even though it is not
relevant to the story. (I could understand it if there was an error
in procedure that caused ramifications in the criminal trial - but
here it is boringly gratuitous.) The book is the opposite of an
"I couldn't put it down" good read - but the police
proceedural texts are good for curing insomnia.

A really good read...........
I am an avid reader of true crime and I must say this is one of the best. It is well written and the author leaves no stone unturned to let the reader know exactly what John Weber was all about. I just don't understand how his family didn't do more for him? If my brother stole my underwear and wrote perverted letters to me, I would have ran out of my house so fast I would have left a skid marks. I wouldn't have stayed around to hear him talk to himself, that's for sure. And I don't get his wife. Besides the fact that he looked like a baby with a beard, his bedwetting would have been enough for me to hit the road. I can't believe that this weird little deviant wasn't throwing off "I'm a nut" signals to anyone. The description of the way he killed Carla will leave the reader sickened. Not for the fainthearted that's for sure.

Awful Marriage!
I read this really expecting a blessing but didn't feel blessed at all. This couple fought so often and said so many horrible things to each other that I couldn't believe it.Their self-centerdness and explosive anger was amazing.I felt more depressed by the book than uplifted. They had no constructive advice only superficial junk.I honestly find it hard to believe that they are happy today though they say they are.Two books I can highly reccomend for wives are "Finding the hero in your husband" and "The politically incorrect wife" They are both much more enlightening and helpful than the above book.

Much To Be Gleaned From This One!
Upon reading the first few pages I thought this was going to be another husband and wife team patting each other on the back for being so wonderful and insightful while providing nothing of real substance for the reader. However, when feelings of conjecture come over me like that I find that I don't usually put a book down but like to read on to confirm or refute my presupposition. In this case I was happily surprised.

Throughout the book Frank and Bunny candidly expose their warts and weaknesses and use them to effectively demonstrate how by applying sound biblical doctrine they were able to work through a variety of serious relational difficulties. I was moved by the way they use their deep love for each other as a catalyst to honestly confront their personal demons and reign in their egos. It became quite evident that there was a power struggle going on in their marriage and without looking to Christ and scripture and subsequently delving into the dynamics of the personal roles God intended for each of them it doesn't appear there would have been much hope for its survival.

Bunny and Frank took the much maligned submission/spiritual head doctrine and really cast a brilliant light on it. Again looking to their own relationship which seemed to be quite volatile in it's infancy they masterfully illustrate how introspection and mutual supplication to God can profoundly transform two people into one mind. Their story is a compelling testimony to the victory that can be established when the Holy Spirit intervenes for believers and Christ-like love becomes the focal point of any marriage.

Wonderful Marriage Guide
This book is absolutely wonderful, and fun to read. It helped my husband and I through our first year of marriage, and equipped us with tools and principles that are practical. The best thing about them is you can begin to use them immediately. The activities at the end of each chapter are great and set the stage for future exploration in several areas of your marriage.

the book was dissapointing because the author cant seem to accept the fact that prejudice is natural so he tries to convince us that since there was a time when there was no prejudice, then we can get rid of it. The evidence he presents for this view is weak since the illustrations he used only shows caricatures of blacks.Another thing is,he falls into the same old racist definition of the egytians as white when it seems even to a moron that they appear to be mulatto than anything else.the only good thing about the book is what i learned about n.african blacks in antiquity.Racism has always been here and will always be here. The aauthor has not convinced me that the ancient greeks or romans had no clor prejudice,in fact he has convinced me of just the opposite.

Snowden presents an extremely credible view of ancient race
Let's get it straight. Dr. Frank Snowden knows what he is talking about.

Snowden offers solid evidence from antiquity that does show "racism" based on skin color was in fact not a major issue of ancient times. While it is true that slavery did exist from antiquity, it was based on conquest, and not skin color or race from a biological superiority/inferiority perspective.

Dr. Snowden is not writing a piece of revisionist history or unsupported political Afro-centrism, he is presenting findings of honest and credible research.

This is an excellent book that any intelligent person who has serious questions about race and racism in history should read.

One possible conclusion you may arrive at is that racism is evidently a much more recent social (and possibly even theological) construction in history and definitely not one that originated in antiquity.

I highly recommend "Before Color Prejudice".

I felt ripped off buying this book.
I needed some concrete advice on how to handle complaint more effectively. This book didn't really tell me much more than to be obnoxious in demanding what you want. While the squeaky wheel gets the oil, why be obnoxious to a low level representative of the company? If you don't like how you are being treated, take your business and money elsewhere. This book just taught how to be a whiny, obnoxious customer, until the company caves in and you get what you want. How about some constructive advice instead?

Too harsh!
I agree with others thoughts. I think the book goes overboard on expecting totaly 300% prfection ALL the time. It says that many people in service industries shouldn't be there because they are incompetant. I am a waitress, and I like my job, and I found that rather offensive. It isn't my fault when the kitchen screws up your meal, or that it tastes bad, or that it took too long to cook. I don't cook it!
This book has some good advice, but has a lot of stuff that you would ignore.

A harsh outlook on customer service and satisfaction
The book Consumer Terrorism: How to Get Satisfaction While You're Being Ripped Off by Frank Bruni is about the poor customer service given by many companies in the United States. The book gives good advice to consumers who desire better customer service and demand satisfaction. It is a bit harsh when it comes to some situations and goes beyond what most people would do to get satisfaction. I think that the authors could have been a little easier on some of the companies. I did like the fact that the authors pointed out companies that provide excellent customer service. Other bonuses in this book are: a guide to using the Internet to file complaints and a list of consumer protection departments across the nation. Although I enjoyed reading this book, I think that the authors could be a little more lenient. People are human and mistakes are made sometimes. All in all, it did offer good advice to those consumers who may need a little push to get good customer service.

I don't think that the author empasized the Pistol's life as well as he could have. I have known several things about his life that wasn't even mentioned in the book.

Best story I've read about a Macedonain American Superstar
Reading this book was entertaining but I wish it was more comprehensive. There was not enough time spent on his Bulgarian Macedonian heritage and how that affected his style and work ethic which drove him to push himself so hard. More time on his early years would have given us a rounder, fuller and more accurate picture. Still a pretty good read though

Excellent, outlining his father's life added a lot to the bo
While this book did speak about Pete's career a lot. The whole point of that was to show how empty it had left him and that only a personal relationship with jesus christ could fill the void in his life. Possessions will not make you happy. Only God can do that. This amazing story of a man's battle to find truth and happiness gets 5 stars from me.

A real Tombstone travesty
In the last few years with the discovery of Frank Waters' original manuscript for this book, scholars of Western American History now understand how much Waters distorted the memoirs of Allie Earp (wife of Virgil Earp and sister-in-law of Wyatt) in this later, published version. It is shocking to realize that literally every negative thing Allie Earp was alleged to have said about Wyatt Earp in "The Earp Brothers of Tombstone" was absent in Waters' earlier manuscript. The conclusion that Waters altered Allie Earp's words to fit his strongly anti-Earp prejudice is inescapable. "The Earp Brothers of Tombstone" was highly influential in the 1960's and 1970's in creating the image of Wyatt Earp as basically an adulterous criminal far removed from the 1950's television portrayal as a peerless hero. In fact, Allie Earp's memoirs presented in the original manuscript show Wyatt Earp in a rather favorable light, as a stern and taciturn man, but honorable. Frankly, I think that the University of Nebraska should be ashamed to continue to publish this book in the light of the discovery of Waters' original manuscript -- it is not history, only a fictionalized smear.

A counterpoise
This book is an excellent counterpoise to the silly, inaccurate and self-serving blather which usually passes for a biography of Earp's life. While it has problems, here and there, it is, by orders of magnitude, more accurate than books which claim Earp was a lawman, primarily, or cleaned up any western town, of which several more have been published in the last few years.

Read it, look up the very accurate records kept by the justice department regarding who was a Deputy US Marshal (including special deputies, commissioned for one purpose or another), and who was not, and decide for yourself which story is correct: the intrepid lawman, or the pimp who abandoned his common-law wife; the wealthy gambler and real estate magnate, or the lazy ne'er do well who ran out on a ...mortgage; the unfailing courageous battler for law and order, or the braggart who had his face slapped and gun taken by a real US Marshall in Alaska.

The Best Book on the Earps
This book is a remarkable treasure. A painfully honest look at the Earp brothers from the point of view of Virgil's wife. Unbalanced in it's own way as all memoirs are, it's still the most credible account we have of this troubled but fascinating family. Waters has been under attack lately by a new generation of Wyatt Worshipers but his book stands out among the volumes of Earp literature as a light in a dark forest. Read this as an antidote to Casey Terfertiller's love letter to Wyatt that passes itself off as a objective biography.
