The Boy Fortune Hunters in Yucatan

A very intersting look at a differint Baum..
This is one of Baum's less famous and more infamous series. Being out of print for many many many years and now coming back. I for one am grabbing up the editions as fast as they come out. Similar to the storytelling in his Master Key the Boy Fortune Hunter follows the exploits of three your boys. Now there is a note in the beginning about some of the viewpoints might not be PC, but not to the point (at least in my opinion) that they take away form the story. It is really your typical turn of the century boy's stuff, but it still is wonderfully Baum.

Useful but severely limited
A reference book on the chart activity of records ranked on the CD, 12" single, and jukebox charts, video games, and videocassette sales and rentals in Cash Box Magazine. Entries include artist, title, catalog no., chart date, and week-by-week position on the chart. A section at the back shows the number one entries for each week. You won't find any information on the artists themselves, but this is worthwhile resource for record collectors, discographers, and chart fanatics. That said, the book is disappointing overall due to the scattershot selection of the charts covered (does anybody really care about the video games chart?) and the lack of coverage of some the more important charts (albums, singles - covered in the authors' other volumes through 1985 and 1981 respectively). Recommended as an addition to the Joel Whitburn Billboard books but definitely not as a substitute.

The story tells a tale of extraordinary love and sadness
I found the story a little challenging to read , however, it struck my heart so deep that I could'nt put it down . The amount of love that was expressed was unreal.A perculiar story , Thomas Hardy has used the un touched parts of his imagination to shock the reader . The story is beautiful , and disturbing .

Must have for Space: 1889
If you are planning to play Space: 1889, this is THE supplemental book to get. It gives much greater detail to Mercury & Venus than the rulebook, and adds to the information on Mars. The information on Victorian Earth is lacking, though the travel times and world maps of 1889 Earth are helpful.
Cloud Captains provides interesting detail on Karkarham, "the Casablanca of Mars" - where just about anything goes. It is a great place to set a campaign for ribald adventurers.

Code Five
Code Five by Frank G. Slaughter is set a few years after the Vietnam War. Dr. Jud Tyler is highly decorated and one of the most respected field surgeons in the army, but now with one big flaw, while working in a field hospital in An Tha, vietnam a grenade went off, partially parilyzing him and giving him a medical condition called Aphasia.
After being dispatched from the army his old friend and army asks him to come back to the hospital where he started his medical career because they are in dire need for good doctors. When he comes back to Farmingham he is shocked, in the ten years he was gone it went from a nice, quiet town to a runned down dump and St. Lukes hospital is in total chaos and its up to Jud to fix it.
I thought it was an allright book most of it held my intrest and the ending turned out pretty good.
I would recomend this book to anyone who is intrested in the field of medicine.

Dry and Boring
I ordered this book as the primary textbook for an independent study course in community psychology. While the text is thorough and up-to-date, this is one of the most boring textbooks I have tried to read. This textbook is poorly designed- no pictures, no color, virtually no charts and diagrams to compliment the text. As a student interested in learning community psychology, I found this an extremely difficult text. It put me to sleep every time I tried to read it. If you have a strong attention span, then this book is fine. If you need something more from a textbook than 300 pages of black and white print, then keep looking.

The Complete Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
Published in Digital by Wildside Press ()
Author: L. Frank Baum
Amazon base price: $2.49
Average review score:

Birth of the Santa Legend
The author of the Wizard of Oz deserves consideration and respect for the delightful fantasies he has provided the world. This syrupy recreation of Santa's youth, manhood and ultimate immortality is quainting charming--especially to the young-at-
heart. However, there are several serious issues mentioned: if we are to die, why are we born at all? No outright religion is preached, but this is a Baum's philosophy: "Everything perishes except the world itself and its keepers..but while life lasts,
everything on earth has its use. The wise seek ways to be helpful to the world, for the helpful ones are sure to live
again."

This book relates how an orphan named Claus found his true calling--to bring joy to the children of the world. Each man must discover and honor his own mission, but Claus' dilemma is the morality of giving gifts to rich children, when there are so many who are truly poor. One chapter even deals with the timeless battle between Good and Evil.

Baum describes how each custom associated with the secular celebration of Christmas came into existence--without reference to the manger scene. Baum truly loved children, as he dedicated most of his writing to their enjoyment. He concludes about the annual gift-bringer: "No one..was so greatly beloved as Santa
Claus, because none other was so unselfish as to devote himself to making others happy. For a generous deed...spreads and leaves its mark on all nature and endures through many generations." An enjoyable, sentimental tale for children of all ages and religions.

Counting is For the Birds
After sharing this book with 2 kindergarten classes I wish to contest other reviews by saying my students loved the simple, rhyming text. The format helped my students practice numerical order and rhyming while giving just enough factual information to hold their attention. They enjoyed the illustrations and could identify several of the birds featured.

Interesting bio
You don't necessarily have to be a gear head, or even remotely interested in motorcycles, to enjoy this Horatio Alger-like biography about a winner - on the race track, in the business world and in life. Working for Trev Deeley for the past 15 years, I had only known him for his stunning home & love of "toys", his quick temper and his thoughtful generosity. Naturally I was curious to learn more about this supposedly "larger than life" celebrity in the motorcycle world. The book provided the answers to my questions. It is well researched, if a little skimpy on the details, and a quick, easy read. A lot of references to local (Vancouver/ Victoria) geography make it particularly interesting to those who are familiar. It is accompanied by some fascinating photos that provide a good reference to the narrative. A good inside look into the motorcycle industry, and the life of a very fascinating man...it actually inspired me to pursue an unfulfilled lifelong desire: to purchase a motorcycle and learn to ride!
