Accurate, insightful, synthetic... and fun to read.
This book is one of the best of the whole West Point series. The authors have found a way to describe an analyse historical events in detail and in a very serious way, yet the book is never boring nor exceedingly academic. The readers feels like a junior officer in a staff HQ and witnesses key decisions being made. A brilliant and innovative book, maybe a little too centered on the role of the United States. The Atlas is a useful complement, and reading the two in parallel is invaluable. Probably one of the best tools to understand WWII ever designed.

Great for researchers and anyone into ubiquitous computing
Great for researchers and everyone who is interested in ubiquitous computing, which may very well be the future of computing. The book in general gives a high-level overview of available technology and security issues/requirements needed for this technology. One drawback is that the book will probably become obsolete after sometime as ubiquitous computing is evolving relatively fast..

Excellent review of available technology circa 1981
Written after the 1970s oil price crisis, this book pulls together the available technologies to make a house (more) independent of outside systems. This is not limited to energy (heating, cooling, and electricity), but also includes water supplies and septic systems.

The coverage is pretty comprehensive. The only problem with this book is that specific technologies are dated because the book was written over 20 years ago.

Wright Design
A good, revelatory, and brief book, but not as your First Book of Wright. Hoppen focuses on architecture with very little mention of the allied arts (glass, furniture, etc.) for which Wright was also famous. It is the only book organized by the geometric primes or principles at play in Wright's buildings. Although based on a chronological, sequential insight into Wright's development that Englishman Hoppen had while one of Wright's last apprentice-students, the text consists of short vignettes that actually skip back and forth in a way that could confuse (contrast "Years with Frank Lloyd Wright" by another disciple, Edward Tafel). This book might better be called The Seven Principles..., since Hoppen shows that each "Age" (roughly a decade) is aligned with a design principle and each of those has earlier antecedents, extending and layering onto earlier aspects of Wright's work.

The good side of his serendipity is that Hoppen can trace lines of development or renewed inspiration stemming from far earlier projects Wright once drafted. It is written as a paean to human creativity. Hoppen presents many revealing episodes in Wright's life and relates them to his bursts of creativity and innovation. While they ring true, most episodes are unattributed. A tall but thin book with generous margins filled with black-and-white illustrations. Plans are often too small for legibility.

Seventeenth-Century Prose and Poetry

Authors: Alexander M. Witherspoon and Frank J. Warnke
Amazon base price: $77.95

Average review score:

An excellent anthology of 17th century prose and poetry
A beautiful volume divided into two parts. The first contains the prose of writers such as John Milton and George Herbert, and the second, poetry by people like John Donne, Ben Jonson, and George Herbert. Each auther has his own bibliography. Even Francis Quarles emblematic poetry is encluded with the wood cuttings. For all of its beauty, there is a severe lack of female contributers and the the tone of the book is very religious.

A Good Step-By-Step Book On Painting
I am an art teacher, and I found that when my students become frustrated with their work, and they run out of ideas for painting, a step-by-step is always a reliable lesson plan. This particular step-by-step book by Frank Clarke is great for everyone who likes to have an outline to go by, but still wants to be creative. Right now my students and I are working on a seascape acrylic painting following Frank Clarke's instructions. We are all really enjoying the way our paintings are coming out.

MFA's Gift Creates a Stir in Boston
Melvin Blake and Frank Purnell were avid art collectors. At the time of their death, many of their art works were willed to Boston's Museum of Fine Art and have become part of the museum's permanent collection. To honor this gift, the museum had a special showing of their work and issued this book as a commentary and companion to the exhibit. Most of the pieces in the collection are twentieth century works. There is great variety in this collection. The collection has a number of nude works, but the people depicted in the paintings and sketches are hardly glamorous which adds a certain intrigue to them. Perhaps the most interesting work in the collection is Vanitas by Claudio Bravo. This work depicts a man from Tangier sleeping while his son blows bubbles. The man looks almost like a monk and the son a choir boy. A close second would be Antonio Lopez Garcia's Lavabo y Espejo which depicts a bathroom sink. The painting is both simple and striking. This book exposes people to these relatively unknown works of modern art and the written commentary of the book is very helpful an introduction to the artists featured as well as a testimony to the generosity of the Blake and Purnell estate.

To the Court of Public Opinion
If it pleases the Court... Of the more than 150 piano folios I have arranged in my life, this was - at least for me - one of the most interesting ones. Each of the little "easy piano" composition is based on a different scale, many of which are quite esoteric and unknown to the average piano student. I had hoped that this folio would stimulate student and teacher alike. Truth to tell, the book has not found a large audience, whereas some less interesting folios of mine have. Sadly, creativity does not always pay off. -frank metis-
