BEST dissenting, counter-culture JOURNAL IN AMERICA
If you believe that Newsweek, ABC News, and (yes) National Public Radio are good ways to stay on top of things, skip this and buy a book by Al Gore. If, on the other hand, you would like to read a remarkable journal, you've arrived. The Baffler has no corporate advertising, is well-edited (thank god), and offers scintilating critiques of the mass media/corporate/industrial/advertising/idea makers. I sound like an ad for the Baffler: it never sounds like an ad for anything. It's a great read every time and marvelous brain tool to pick locks with.

My 3 year old loves this book
This frontier story is a favorite of my preschooler, I think because the two main characters, young girls, confront the fear of "monsters" while gathering flowers for their mother's birthday. The fears of night, being lost, and "monsters" are all addressed in a way that my son finds reassuring. He asks to read this story a lot. It's nice to find a story that doesn't involve commercialized characters with pre-determined story plots. The artistry and text are pleasing for the reader.

A solid overview
As I find with all of the Fabozzi books, this is a very comprehensive overview of a complex subject. Fabozzi has gathered together an impressive list of experts who each write on what they know best. I found the chapter on Latin American loans to be particularly useful.

ADVENTURES IS RIGHT !! Wow !
To think that all of these stories are true, makes these stories so much more dear to your heart ! It's just amazing how truly smart animals are ; They teach us so much about life and living.
This particular book is a great book for school kids too = a great way to get kids to read is to give them a book like this one of real true stories that they can really get into. First Lady, Laura Bush, has this book also; Mrs. Bush is on a campaign to get our children and young people back to reading, as I'm sure you know. This book is a great book to get started with and it's for all ages. My mother, plus 70, loved this book too. Hey = It's a great gift to give those you love for Christmas !

An indispensible reference
My 12 year old (who hates math) picked up this book and said "awesome!" My 17 year old, who is taking pre-calculus, was fascinated - exclaiming, "I never knew that about circles!"

This study dictionary defines and explains mathematical terms and functions in a comprehensive, dictionary-style format. The information is geared for students from pre-algebra through college.

This is simply a reference that every student should have. The definitions and illustrated examples are grouped by concept. When you look up a term, you will find it on a page with all the other terms related to the same mathematical function. For example, the word "denominator" will be found under "fractions". In fact, just reading the definitions on any given page is a good introduction to the subject.

A comprehensive 'wordfinder' index at the begining of the book directs you to the right page. This book would be a bargain at twice the price. (It probably will make more sense to your kids than the explanations in their textbooks).

PATIENCE! PATIENCE! PATIENCE!
Baseball for Breakfast is a delightful book for kids, especially those who hate to wait. The book shows it's readers what can happen when you don't take time for all things in life and how that thinking only of yourself can be disastrous. A wonderful book to show that each moment is important and that patience is truly a virture!

Here¿s a deal
Sometimes a deal comes along you can't pass up.
Just over a year ago, I was browsing around on Amazon.com, checking out one of their bargain book deals.
God, some of the things people write books about. Let's see, cookbooks, how to wire teeth, how to jump-start your car with a pencil. Ah, here we are. Sports.
One of these so-called "bargain books" was "Sports Illustrated Baseball: Four decades of Sports Illustrated's finest writing on America's Favorite Pastime." Yeah, long title, I know, but if you can find this book anywhere, it's well worth the search, not to mention the [money], plus [money] for shipping or whatever it was I paid for it.
In hindsight, I may have paid 50 clams for this book, given its humor, intensity and raw truth offered by some of the best sports writers in the business.
Mark Mulvoy, SI's managing editor, prefaces the collection with an introduction of his own, asking, "Why does baseball inspire such wonderful writing? Red Smith had a very simple answer to that question. 'Today's game,' he once wrote, 'is always different from yesterday's game.'"
The articles are as different as one game to the next, and read more like stories, vignettes grouped into chapters titled Spring, Summer, Fall, Players, Management, Milestones, They Also Serve and The Game.
The oldest piece in the book was originally penned in the August 23, 1954 edition of SI. No single era's tales are less fascinating than another's, but the evolution of the tale is quite intriguing.
The authors range from Peter Gammons to George Plimpton to Frank Deford. This collection is filled with jewels of varying length and subject matter. Rick Reilly's "An American Classic" allows us to catch a glimpse of a Texas teen phenom and his life off the baseball field, while, at the same time, he's chasing a national prep record for consecutive wins.
"Yogi," by Roy Blount, Jr., takes us inside one of the game's sharpest minds and offers a hilarious dichotomy of Yogi Berra's quotes and sayings of the world's famous Hindu Yogis:
"The time is now and now is the time." - Yogi Bhajan
"You mean right now?" - Yogi Berra when someone asked him what time it was.
But perhaps the most engaging and awe-inspiring tale is Steve Rushin's "A Series to Savor," chronicling the 1991 World Series. Atlanta versus Minnesota. A seven game series. Rushin writes, "There were five one-run duels, four of them won on the game's final play, three extended to extra innings."
In the piece, we get an inside look at the series that reduced grown men to tears, ill health and rashes and caused them to feel and act like young boys on the sandlot.
We need stories like this to recall when Atlanta began their remarkable run in the 1990s, with their otherworldly pitching staff, which still has not let up today.
We need stories like this to remember how extraordinary players like Kirby Puckett were, taken from the game far too soon because of glaucoma. This 5-foot-8 piece of granite practically made a living by bringing potential home runs to centerfield back to the playing field, and his play in the 1991 Fall Classic alone may justify his place in Cooperstown.
Bookending Mulvoy's intro wonderfully is novelist William Soroyan's reflection on the game: baseball's innate ability to keep the viewer in his seat.
In Soroyan's words, "From the first pitch to the last out, the caring continues. With a score of 6-0, two outs, two strikes, nobody on, only an average batter at bat, it is still possible, and sometimes necessary, to believe something can happen - for the simple reason that is has happened before, and very probably will happen again."
So, go ahead, storm your local bookstore, hit the websites 'til they crash, demand your right to have this collection. Because with more labor problems looming ominously on the horizon after this year's World Series, books like this treasure may be all we, as baseball fan, have for a while.

An excellent and practical guide.
I have found this book very useful both in the field and in the museum. It represents an excellent feat of practical scholarship by Bonaccorso, with good keys, locality information (with maps), reference to specific museum specimens, and external measurements for all species from PNG, including the provinces in the Bismarcks and northern Solomons. It is not only a terrific synthesis of what is known of bat biology in the country, but also offers a large store of new information. Also extremely handy are the comprehensive gazetteer at the end with lat/long coordinates and the good bibliography. Fiona Reid's excellent color illustrations round out the guide.

Wonderful ! both book and memories
The title initially didn't mean much to me, but when I saw reference to the LRDG, a bell rang. Having served in the Western Desert of Egypt in WW2, I knew that I had to read this book. I did not know any of the LRDG members but I was very familiar with their existance. As with all Special Forces these men had a mission, and as with all special missions, exceptional men were called for... Their mission meant existance very different than todays desert forces face. There were no cell phones, no computers, limited communications, very little water and certainly no Perrier !! Anyone interested in special missions carried out by either side should absolutely not pass this one up. Trooper Jopling's diaries are incredible and the photographs are superb. Author O'Carroll deserves a medal for this one !

One of the best!
This would have to be one of the most insightfull books on the LRDG that I have ever read.Having meet and talked with several KIWI LRDG veterans, this book truly reflects what daily life in the LRDG was like. Frank Joplings diaries are packed with the "every day" happenings that this elite group of humble heroes took as "just doing their bit"as they blazed their way into history and legand. This book is one of the best. Many of the photographs have never been published before, Do not miss out, you will regret it forever.
