MANAGING CANCER TAKES A HUMAN APPROACH
MANAGING CANCER addresses the particular needs of African Americans and helps them to achieve earlier diagnosis and thus better cures. There is much that can be done to prevent cancer before it begins and this book fully covers over twenty types of cancers in language every reader can understand. MANAGING CANCER is well-written, thoroughly researched and accessible and speaks to readers through personal stories involving patients, the senior author himself, and his family. Many of these stories are poignant, revealing examples of how the human spirit can endure and even triumph when faced with crises. This is a book that will educate, inspire, and improve the life of African Americans from all walks of life.

Managing Downside Risk in Financial Markets (With- CD-ROM)

Authors: Frank A. Sortino and Stephen Satchell
Amazon base price: $89.95

Excellent Treatment of Risk/Return - A Must Read
Though the book is quite pricey, it delivers a wealth of information regarding various treatments of risk and return. This is not the stuff you find in most financial texts, such as outdated modern portfolio theory. In fact, the material is far beyond the old risk/return traditions of yore. Various authors each contribute a chapter including Sortino so one gets a wide range of views (I only found a few chapters irrelevant to my needs). However, the common theme throughout is, "It is high time to view risk/return in a more meaningful and practical light."

This text is not just for portfolio managers. Anyone involved in risk/return assessment will benefit from the material; though much of the book is intended for those with a mathematical slant. The material can easily be applied to discounted cash flow (DCF) financial modeling though this is not discussed in the text. In my opinion, it blows away VAR, Real Options, etc.

If you ever thought T-Bills were riskless assts, you need to read this book or be forever wrong. I also found a wealth of information on Sortino's website that complimented the text. Lastly, each chapter is chocked full of nice reference articles for those desiring to delve deeper into the multitude of ideas presented.

Managing Iron Salespeople : How to Manage Salespeople in an Ag Dealership

A Must Read!
This is the first and only (to my knowledge) book of its type for salespeople selling agricultural capital equipment. Running counter to the mindless spat of generic "me-too" books on selling, this book stands apart. It is specific, credible and practical. It is also written to be understood. Quickly. Frank Lee has written a book which should benefit all iron salespeople.

A great glossy insight into the man behind the glory
1992 Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell is one of Britain's racing legends, his duels with Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet fresh in people's memories. Williams' wheelchair-bound boss Frank Williams writes the foreword, and the two have achieved success hand-in-hand. With the help of veteran racing author Derick Allsop, he has written his most authoritative work on his success. Sections look at his personality and life off the track, which conveys him as a classic family man, the Williams team and what made it tick, the way a race weekend works (fascinating information for all F1 fans), the drives eh has raced against (unsurprisingly his comments on his 'Gang of 4' rivals aren't always complementary) and each race individually. Derick writes a section on his 1992 championship triumph, looking at each of the races in which he emphatically achieved the dream it looked like he would be denied. A great look at a great racer.

Scrummy recipes from the Eighteenth Century
The trouble with the old recipes or 'receipts' as they were called in the eighteenth century, is that they leave a great deal ot the imagination. They had no temperatures, very few instructions- most cookery information was handed down mother to daughter, and of course their ovens had no thermostats anyway. When Alice and Frank Prochaska dug up the old Receipt book belonging to Margaretta Ackworth, they decided to remedy this and spent the next months experimenting with the recipes, the ingredients and generally researching the family.

The result is this marvellous book. At once a cookbook with authentic Georgian period recipes with modern translations - and also a short history on the the cooking of the time generally, and Margaretta's family specifically. The book tells us alot about culture in Georgian England of the eighteenth century and makes a marvellous read.

Many of the recipes just seem plain strange, they include ingredients rarely used now like carraway, rose-water, quinces and hare - well doesn't everthing now have hershey's chocolate or steak? Meat is often collared, scotched, potted, ragouted or colloped. I haven't had the courage to try any of the meat dishes as yet .

The layout is really nice. The Prochaska's use the original Ackworth recipe to precede their modern 'translation' of it, so you get the best of both worlds, the old and the new. There are only two colour photo's in this book, reproductions of the portraits of Margaretta and her husband. The rest of the book is printed on a heavy cream paper in black type which feels very satisfying to read.
