post-war germany and it's past haunting it. rating: 7
Frank Defelitta wrote a good story on a holocaust survivor/mental patient on a killing spree to advenge the wrongs of the past. it has a good storyline and takes you into 1960's germany and Israel and you get a feeling of the time. The relationship between the detective and female holocaust survivor leaves the reader confused and disappointed. I still pull my copy out & read it every few years.

Ancient stories of an ancient people.
Linderman has a wonderful narrative voice in his stories, retaining the flavor and style of the tales as they were told to him by the likes of Walks-with-the-wolf, Fine-feather, Bird-in-the-ground and Cold-wind, back in the early days of the 20th century when Linderman (called Sign-talker by his Native American friends) spent much time at their fires.

By no means a comprehensive tome of Indian lore, Linderman's Old Man Coyote is a delightful introduction to the stories unique to the Crow tribes. It could be a great stepping stone to further study into this fascinating subject.

through
I'm assuming that this is basically the same book as Frank Buchman: a life by the same author which is out of print. It's a very through and well researched book about the life of a remarkable man, gives one a different world view from the late twenties right up to the sixties and explains what a life of faith really means. Could have been a little more critical but still a very intresting book, not a typical christian read.

Spread the joy
I've always enjoyed this simple Valentine's day picture book. When Milton and Marvin decide that "valentines aren't just for girls, they're for everyone" they set about procuring valentines to give to everyone in the neighborhood. Money being short, they make their own cards and slip them under people's doors instead of mailing them. (People are delighted.) When they have some left over, they sell their homemade valentines for 5 cents each, so other people can have the joys of giving. Milton laments that they didn't get any valentines themselves, but that isn't quite true, for with the money they made the boys are able to buy a box of candy to share with one another in friendly fashion. This is a sweet book about random acts of kindness and overall generosity, and the straightforward text and cartoony illustrations keep it from being sappy. A good one.

A good introduction to a vast subject.
This is a very short book on such a huge theme...

The book presents the reasons for both wars as an strategic decision by the rulers of Germany. It makes a very good case, of the connection between the reasons for both wars.

Due to its size it is not very detailed, but still is very interesting. The author has included excerpts of historical documents that are related to the reasoning developed in the book.

It is a good book to start understanding why these two wars happened.

Great book-useless CD
As a 2nd year pediatric resident in a foreign hospital I chose Oski's Pediatrics as my reference textbook based on the clarity of disease presentation, the friendly and consultatory approach to issues as begining your own practice etc. I found extremelly helpfull the sections with brief disease outlines, symptom related differential diagnosis and syndrome presentation. An excellent book (5 star)with the only drawback being the unacceptable CD (no star) which is hard to master and has limited flexibility regarding page layout (could a PDF version help?).

Our America

Eloquent if a bit brash
I picked this up because I enjoy Frank's voice. The essays in this collection-- written to his "peers" in an attempt to explain America at his time definitely show a nice range. Frank occasionally writes so boldly that it can turn one off of the work, but in the last few essays, esp. New York, he hits his stride and writes some beautiful, flawless essays that perfectly define his times-- just before America's cultural explosion in the 20's-- and still hold true today.

Overland telegraph : an epic feat of endurance and courage
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus & Robertson Publishers ()
Author: Frank Clune

Used price: $30.00

Valuable for understanding the Australian Outback
This is a very readable account of the building of the telegraph line from Adelaide to Darwin last century. Clune gives thorough coverage to the political factors involved, which were surprizingly dominant. It's hard to believe in the Internet age how only a little more than 100 years ago, people in Australia waited literally months to hear news from Europe and North America. Then the telegraph came, and it took only a few days for Morse Code messages to arrive!

Today it's hard to find any remains of the line, except for the Telegraph Station in Alice Springs, and a very modest memorial next to the track north of Oodnadatta. But it's fascinating to get an understanding of the difficulties of stringing a wire through the uncharted centre of Australia, but there are lots of good insights if you are planning to travel in that part of the world.

Worth reading!

Another good Oz reference
Whereas "The Annotated Wizard of Oz" is a good reference for the first Oz book specifically, this is a good reference for the whole Oz phenomenon, from Baum to later authors, from books to stage plays and films.

The book opens with a description of L. Frank Baum himself; biographical details, his history of books, the writing of the 14 Oz books, his relations with illustators, and his involvement with stage plays and films based on Oz. This section, like the whole book, is illustrated with many black & white illustrations, b&w photographs, and a few color plates.

The second chapter describes the ongoing Oz phenomenon taken over by Ruth Plumly Thompson and some later Oz authors, and includes pictures of the dustjackets of some of these books as well as many other illustrations.

The third chapter deals specifically of course John R. Neill. There are also samples of illustrations from foreign language translations and adaptions of the Oz series.

Chapter 4 documents Oz on stage and on screen, starting with Baum's earliest stage plays, his later attempts with the Oz on stage and in film, later cartoon adaptions, the 1939 MGM movie, up to The Wiz of 1975. And the last short chapter spends some space to Oz pages + 16 unnumbered pages of color plates. By David L. Greene 0-394-410548, LCCN 77-3675.
