Irish Citizenship Handbook

This handbook saved me time, money and a lot of frustration.
Simple and easy to use, the Irish Citizenship Handbook walked me through all the steps to my dual citizenship as an Irish-American. Got my Irish passport finally due to this handbook. Found the place, address and phone number for my grandmother's birth certificate in County Wexford. Then the location (address and phone) of her marriage certificate in Chicago. My mother's birth certificate in Buffalo, N.Y., and my parent's marriage certificate in Boston. The book has the addresses of all relevant public documents in both Ireland and America, plus information on Canada and Australia. This book saved me time, money, and a lot of frustration in obtaining dual citizenship from the Irish Consulate in Boston. My phone calls alone would have been far beyond the cost of this book...Thanks for making me an Irish citizen.

An excellent presentation of the Iroquois.
This is one of the volumes in the long and extensive "Indians of North America" series. It provides a good and brief introduction to the culture and history of the Iroquois tribes. Children who wish to learn more about native Americans will enjoy it, as will adults. We all learn of the importance of the League and their impact on the American Revolution as well as their impact today.

The most lucid explanation of the U.S. Tax code written.
Do you care to fully understand your rights and obligations to the U.S. Government as it pertains to the Internal Revenue Code? Read this book. Mr. Kowalik's in depth explanation of the evolution of the United States Tax Code is the best thus far written. Though it requires some dedication to comprehend, it is a valuable read. This book exposes the fraud instituted by the U.S. Government against it citizens better than any thus far published. This isn't simply about being a "tax cheat", you can hire and accountant or tax attorney to help you with that, and pay handsomely for the privilege. This is about the common individal being permitted to excersize their common right to exist and pursue the establishment and maintenance of that existance without harrassement by the various governments of these United States. Do we have a moral obligation to support our government? Of course. However, the United States Government has the duty and obligation to defend the U.S. Constitution and not merely, through tawdry political process, shirk that responibility and consequently diminish the greatness of the documents which makes us who we are. Read it.

Isis : Poems

Pleasingly Askew
"Diane Frank's first book introduces us to a sensibility pleasingly askew. Her poems, like most positive experiences, never quite go where we expect them to; they follow their own imaginative paths and persuade us, often with humor and a surreal charm, that the journey will be rewarding. It is."--Stephen Dunn "These poems are nearly oriental in a sense of orienting towards the hidden. there is a delicacy here, a spinning, a weaving, a branching out. One door opens so another can close. At the center of her poems is that tender dark space we occasionally fly out across, as humans, with no thought of beaks or wings."--Lauren Liebling "Diane Frank's Isis is a marriage of two quite different impulses. For one thing, there are poems of spiritual excursion. But alongside these are poems of a wry, even riotous inside into the spetacle of everyday life we live. In the tension between these two impulses, Diane Frank writes a poetry which is positively radiant with grace, charm and truth."--Joseph Di Prisco

Passage to Heaven or Return to Hell
Millions of immigrants traveled by sea to America in search of a better life than the one they left behind in their old country. They were escaping from poverty, famine, persecution, and conscription. They sought jobs, freedom, and adventure. In Island of Hope, Island of Tears by David M. Brownstone, Irene M. Franck, and Douglass Brownstone, the history of Ellis Island comes to life through stories told by immigrants and the workers in their own words. This book explores the reasons why people left their home countries and the special role that Ellis Island played in their journey. The authors attempt to answer many questions that surround the peak years of immigration. They approach the subject with facts and personal anecdotes from interviews with people who passed through Ellis Island. The results present a surprising variation in the recounting of tales. No two immigrants recollect an identical experience, even in the same family. Why did they leave? Stella Jedryka left Poland in fear of the Russian soldiers. "We couldn't stand the Russian people-soldiers. We were running away from them" (28). What countries did they come from? "I was born in what is now Czechoslovakia-it was Bohemia in those days" (34) stated Charles Bartunek about the area near Prague in 1913. What did they expect to find? Esther Almgren from Sweden said, "I figured you're going to be picking gold out of the mountains, everybody thought America had no work..." (102). Was America what they had hoped for? "Between 1908 and 1923, fifty or more people returned for every one hundred immigrants that arrived for many nationalities..." (57/58). Some people left in search of adventure and some out of fear. Most were in third-class steerage accommodations and were seasick after they left they port. Still others loved the trip and the food, mostly pickled herring. Some hauled prized possessions with them, like feather beds, while others wore only the clothes on their backs. Many came bearing gifts for relatives in the United States, anything from sausage to whiskey. There were immigrants who stole across guarded borders at night and a few who went in better accommodations on first or second class. Travelers were often promised a short comfortable trip by shipping lines but often found themselves for "two to four weeks in an unseaworthy bucket" (117). Teenagers fared the best, having an optimistic outlook and fewer family responsibilities to harden them, but the newcomers represented all ages. If you are one of the four out of ten Americans who can trace their family back to Ellis Island, you will enjoy this book and perhaps find a story that sounds like your own heritage. Brownstone and Franck illustrate the rough beginning for these important Americans who took risks and paved the way for many of us who enjoy our lives today.

Outstanding
Sit back with a mint julep and follow the thoughts of divorced single mom Anna Lutz Abbot. As a hairdresser, she knows everyone's skeletons as she hears more confessions than the College of Cardinals would hear in their combined lifetimes. Now Anna has scandals in her own life. As a high school senior, her grandma who raised her and the local minister arranged a date between their two charges. His son raped her. When Anna learned she was pregnant; her grandmother reacted with apoplexy that soon led to a death stroke.

Her college daughter is coming home at the same time the creep that sexually molested her will also return to town. Emily is unaware that the guy she thinks is her biological father is gay and never had relations with any woman while her real sire is a rapist. Then there is that gorgeous Connecticut Yankee to obsess.

This novel is reminiscent of the Mossy Creek tales. This excellent work of fiction is fun to read for those who want to read something escapist but interesting. The support characters are an eccentric delightful ensemble especially the lead protagonist's daughter and the two geriatric neighbors who seem less golden and more leaden in attitudes (an ultra conservative Maude in her geezer stage). This is a fine beach bingo book and fans will appreciate the insights into small town southern life that allows interruptions because the novel never requires as much power as the dryers used by Anna.

A Low Country Pleasure
Hello-she's baaaaaaaack- that low country lovin, livin, writin, Dorothea Benton Frank.

As with her previous 2 releases, ISLE OF PALMS, is also set in the author's beloved birthplace region and is a tribute to everything from it's salty marshes to it's eccentric inhabitants.

IOP is the author's best book yet.Frank provides equal parts drama, southern heritage and razor sharp one liners(reminiscent of Jersey girl, Evanovich).

The character of Anna Lutz Abbot is richly layered and supported by an ensemble cast that is flawed, but, loving and loyal.Anna's narrative is truly southern as well as sassy!

After reading all 3 of Frank's books, I have added a much needed, soul feeding, low country visit to my 'things to do before I die list.'

The 2 days spent reading this book was a long over due treat and well worth the wait since PLANTATION. My only regret is I didn't have my feet and backside firmly planted in the sandy beaches of South Carolina while reading it!
