An exhausting collection of papers...
Maybe my expectations were set too high. I had always found it amazing that designers of those state-of-the-art microprocessors were able to squeeze out cycles times that are almost an order of magnitude faster than what I can do on an ordinary asic flow and hoped for a well structured story, which is not to much to ask such an expensive book. I should haved noticed that the authors are listed as 'editors' because a good story is not what I got. Of course, there is some organization (big deal) into different parts (technology aspects, design techniques, clocking issues, fast adders and multipliers etc.) and there are some introductory chapters written by the editors but what you get is essentially a cut-and-paste collection of papers. Papers are usually exceptionally dryly written, cramming as much information as possible in a limited space. Sometimes going in too much detail, sometimes already assuming expert knowledge, almost never hands-on practical. And thus so is this book: overwhelming, dull and highly theoretical. Impossible to read this from front to cover. The statements from the editoral review that this book "Assumes basic knowledge of digital circuit design and device operation" is gross understatement. Be prepared for hard intellectual work while reading this. At one place, for example, a opcode selection circuit is described. For me, a good way of handling this in a textbook, would be to start with a description of the context in which it is used, going to a block diagram and refining into a detailed schematic that evolves into the final solution as trade-offs for speed and area are applied. Not here: the only thing you get is the final, very obscure schematic in domino logic that requires hard labour to figure out. But even after that you can't assess its usefullness since there is no context or anything to compare with. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have bought this book. All topics are handled and it has probably its place on some shelves as a reference, but I would have saved a lot of money by making use of the IEEE web access subscription of my employer instead.

The Discourse of Race in Modern China
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (March, 1992)
Author: Frank Dikotter
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $34.95
Average review score:

Adequate but not excellent
Dikotter gives an interesting and detailed description of racial views from the earliest of China's interactions with a variety of ethnic groups. Unfortunately, he fails to continue his systematic approach throughout the book and by the end just reveals facts. The work is still of great value dispite any faults because it sheds light on a rarely researched but important topic for anyone interested in a fresh perspective to Chinese history.

Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz

Author: L. Frank Baum

Not so good story for a Baum book but the illustrations...!
The illustrations are ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICANT (especially the color plates!) John R. Neil actually hand-colored the plates instead of having the printer at Reilly and Britton do it. The story would of got 1 or 2 stars because it is quite dark and unlike the fantasies we are used to by Baum. But the illustrations are what gets the stars. It's book #4 in the series of 40 BOOKS and it's worth reading although not a tightly-constructed quality story.

Thouroughly Unimpresses
I have to say tha I was thoroughly unimpressed with this play. The author seems to be using the same characters that we all know and love, but most of them seem out of character. It's also a musical so every once in a while the characters burst out in song. This can be anoying; especially when you consider the fact that there is on music written for it. The authors tell people to write their own simple music. This is a disaster waiting to happen! The redeeming quality of the book is the other "helps" that are included in it. They are very good and in depth dispite how short they are. Overall, I do not recommend this purchase

this book is good, but has no content. It's all politics and no action. I don't know about all of the people out there who find politics enjoyable but i hate it!

computer simulation of dynamic models
It is a brief review based on my past memory when I saw the book on the desk of a professor, a colleague at University of Tenessee, Knoxville. The book, Dynamic Models in Physics is a good reference book to improve upon similiar courses in physics departments, particularly for second year physics undergraduates who have completed two semesters of a calculus based introductory physics, and are about to start in a year or two an instruction in Goldstein level of mechanics. I can use the book gainfully even in my own course of a 300 level mechanics course, and if book can be seamlessly adopted to excell spreadsheet, can seve as a companion textbook.

I may have to leave now, and probably i will write a more candid review if i have the book on my desk. I am taking this opportunity to request the authors if they can rush a copy to me. I remember vaguely that the book has a good coverage on normal mode analysis that i use in my diffraction based simulation of materials' structure-property.

Sorry for rushing the review 1

Although this book was written back in the sixties, it is still exciting. Could the bubonic plague really hit America?

A new face for an old book
This book has a very good visual presentation, but the content is surpassed. It seems that the authors never made a good review in the biochemistry section. They still talk about lactic acid, where all the biochemistry books talk about lactate. There are mistakes in bioenergetics, where the authors refer to muscle metabolism to what really occurs in the liver. This book was one of the best. Now it is history.

Lots of unrealated Content
There are only about 20 pages in this book that have to do with Speed Reading. Most of the book is success stories and how to improve your study habits which would be fine if the book was titled "Improve Your Study Habits and Get a Brief Introduction to Speed Reading" but it's not.
