An in-depth look at each of Richthofen's victories
This book is not only a treasure trove of historical information, it also manages to evoke the humanity of the Great War. The authors have tracked down tons of information on Richthofen's victims - where and when they were born, some tidbits of their lives, where they were buried and who they left behind (or what became of them after the war if they survived). The book seems to reveal two sides of Richthofen, too - sometimes, a cold-blooded hunter, other times, more of a sportsman who delighted in meeting his adversaries after defeating them.

The authors have also very, very carefully investigated each confirmed 'kill' to try to determine which Allied loss, if any, it was - and in the process exposed the difficulties and inconsistencies in identifying enemy aircraft, determining what happened to them, and recording all the information correctly. Not surprisingly, their research has revealed that some of the 'victims' may have made it home after all - and that perhaps Manfred did not claim every enemy he shot down.

The book is packed with wonderful photographs, of victims and aircraft and, of course, Richthofen himself. There are color paintings of ten of the victories, along with the artist's comments on some of the historical accuracies and liberties he took.

The only problem - and one that is easily overlooked - is some sketchy editing. Some of the text is not as clear as it could be, and some of the text is not well organized.

A one of a kind history book
Massive amoumts of research were obviously put into this book.UNDER THE GUNS OF THE RED BARON recounts every single one ofRichtofen's eighty enemy kills, and, the death of the Baron himself. It also contains a short biography of the pilots who were shot down, and what plane the victims were piloting. Although this may not be your typical history book, it should be in every aviation enthusiasts bookshelf.

AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO OCEANOGRAPHY
.

For any child who is developing an interest in the marine life sciences this is the book for them.

"Under the Sea" is well structured and logically laid out. It starts with the physical environment of the oceans. The main part of the book is a systematic coverage of the various marine environments that are classified according to their depth and temperature. . The characteristic biotas that occupy each ecological niche are well described.

Some readers may find this approach formulaic but a rigorous scientific methodology is necessary if the information it contains is to be comprehensible and of real value.

The illustrations accompanying the text are bright, accurate but definitely not garish. The pictures and their captions provide good support to the text.

This book is an ideal companion to another book by the "Nature Company Discoveries" title "Mammals" which is edited by George McKay

This book provides an ideal launching pad for those children who are keen to learn about the natural world. This book is definitely out of the ordinary.

.

Informative, very well illustrated
This book is very educational, no matter how old you are. I am a student at UWF and I used this book as part of my sea life lesson plan. The children loved looking at the bright illustrations. I recommend it to everyone.

Another Brick in the Wall
A powerful book that speaks to the truth of what happened at Country Walk Day Care. "Witch Hunts" my foot! These children are still alive, and still live among us, and still suffer the traumatizing effects of what happened to them, as do their families and anyone close to them who has been affected by Frank and Iliana Fuster and whoever they were working with and for.

It is true that a majority of visible nay-sayers have said that the history of ritualized child abuse in this country is nothing more than a "hoax." Consider the source. And consider who benefits.

The ritualized sexual abuse of children continues. The media coverage does not. The hidden agenda of those who would kidnap and torture children remains hidden, and children continue to disappear.

"Unspeakable Acts" speaks to the issue of those acts that remain, so to speak, unspeakable. Survivors have been efficiently silenced -- but not entirely. The story is not over yet.

It is too bad this book is out of print -- but it is still possible to find a copy, and it is well worth having. It is powerful and volatile history, and yes, "another brick in the wall."

Truth or Fiction
This book is the detailed story of the case of Frank and Illeana Fuster and the Country Walk, Florida case of child abuse in a day care center. It was recently rehashed on PBS' Frontline, and low and behold! there are more questions now than ever before!

I read this book in the early 1990s and was mesmerized by all the accounts of so-called sexual abuse of children in day care centers. But guess what, since that time, there have been virtually no incidents of such a thing! I live near Los Angeles, and I watched with great interest the McMartin PreSchool case around the same time wherein all the defendents were eventually acquitted of hundreds of counts of child sexual abuse.

The theory used to be "Why would a child lie? You can trust what a child says. Where else would a child hear these (crude) sexual terms and know about sexual acts?" But times have changed........And interview techniques for children have come under scrutiny and have been left lacking, to say the least.

Why were there so many of these cases ten years ago, and none now? Is the media just not reporting it? Is it not happening anymore? Did it ever happen?

This was truly a mesmerizing book and I remember thinking it was a journalistic reportage and therefore unbiased, but now I'm not so sure. Illeana was eventually deported after serving some time in prison, but because she testified against her husband, Frank is still in prison, serving a 165 year term. Has justice been done in this case?

If you can find a copy of this huge book, read it with an unbiased eye, and remember, while you are reading it, that it was, or may have been, written during one of the USAs many "witch hunts". (Why do we still have them?) This is a very readable and shocking book. Too bad it isn't still in print because it is a very important book, as well.

A Native Vermonter agrees, the State must reinvent itself
Government at a distance does not work. It is easy to ignore the personal responsibility of governance when it is not local. First we allowed the State to take over the rule making and curriculums of our schools and now the Federal authorities are making global rulings on school operations. Those who wish to control find it easier to make rules once at the Federal level and force all to submit to their vision. Return the control to the local levels.

Recreating Democracy on a Human Scale
Having just seen the review posted by Independent Publisher (1998) - right on the money! Ten years after publication, The Vermont Papers is still the only blueprint for dismantling overgrown liberty-destroying political superstructures and restoring true LOCAl democracy with widespread civic involvement. And we also thought it was pretty entertaining, too. (from co-author John McClaughry, now 32 years a Town Moderator)

Excellent
I'm an experienced programmer although I'm just learning VB. This book is essential to becoming productive quickly.

Already an experienced VB programmer? This book is for you!
Being a VB Consultant and a VB Teacher, I've had the opportunity to go through many VB books. By far, VB4 Unleashed is the best. If you're already a good VB programmer, VB4 Unleashed will take you further. You'll learn how-to easily add sound (.wav) to your applications, how-to make screen savers, and even help files. Best part is that there is NO need to purchase any additional third-party controls in order to use the examples. (E.G. Learn Visual Basic in 21 days requires purchase of 3rd party OCX controls to use many of the examples.) I highly recommend this book. Disney's Sketchbooks - Great Resource for Artists!
This fine addition to the Disney Sketchbook series has many of the wonderful sketches done by Disney's animation department for Lady and the Tramp, including many pieces from the storyboards, and several sketches of scenes that never made it into the final film.

Artists that would like to study the Disney style of drawing and animation should find this volume a terrific addition to their collection despite its rather high price. As a student of art, and a fan of the Disney style, I highly recommend any of these books for your library.

A must-have for animation fans!
The Lady & the Tramp sketchbook is just a beautiful book to add to any Disney fan's collection. This book is HUGE and it is full of wonderful sketches of all of the characters (even minor ones) and full color photos from the movie. This is an excellent book for anyone who loves Disney animation.

Perfect Novice's book
Having never painted the usual way, I took to this method like a duck to water. I'm afraid this method may spoil me! I found some of the concepts odd at first, especially the purple underpainting for everything, but then I remembered that Rockwell started his oil paintings with a Mars violet underpainting; and besides, the results are beautiful! I'd say that if you've never done a watercolor before in your life, here is a safe way to plunge into a new medium with good results!

Innovative Approach to Watercolor
A fantastic little book. The author draws with watercolor paint! In otherwords, instead of the usual wash or broad strokes that most painters use to complete their paintings he builds pictures with a wash and then painting thin small strokes or daubs of the brush as if it were a pen. The results are facinating.

Each chapter has a project/demonstration and lists exactly the brushes used, the paint, surfaces, etc. By following the instructions you learn a new approach to watercolor painting. The process is not unlike egg tempera painting (which I also do) except with watercolor paint. After reading this book and completing the acorn project I am ready to begin the next project. I know I am going to have to incorporate more of this style of watercolor painting in my new work.
