Wonderful reading!
The Sports Afield Treasury of Fly Fishing is a fantastic collection of fishing articles. It's made up of stories and articles written by some of the greatest outdoor writers of the 20th Century. Throughout this book, you'll be carried away to another time and place, absorbed in the story setting. While reading most of the articles, the descriptions are so vivid, you'll almost be able to see the tumbling stream in your mind, smell the campfires and coffee, and feel the tug of a hard-fighting trout on the end of your line. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in good outdoor literature.

A wonderful book for aspiring stage managers
I hope to be a Technical Theatre major when I get into college (I am a senior in high school at the moment), and I found a copy of this book at my county library. I read it over and over! I finally bought a copy of my own, which I use as a 'bible' of sorts. When I do stage management for some of my school's productions I always tote this book around as a reference tool. I recommend this book highly; it gives great insight into all aspects of the stage manager's duties. It is also a good read!

Entertaining and Intriguing American History
I loved Star-Spangled Eden. This well researched history reads like a historical romance. Simmons covers 50 of the most critical years of American History, 1830-1850, through the eyes of eight British men and women who came here, traveled widely, and had marvelous adventures. Each traveler plugs into a major theme of the era when the country developed from raw frontier to a modern industrial state and provides a unique perspective on important events of this period - the Southern slavery system, the Civil War, the exploration and settlement of the West, etc.

My favorite chapter is the last one on Oscar Wilde's witty eleven-month cross-country American tour. To quote the author, "Here was the leading British snob, an effete poseur of highly refined sensibilities, lecturing American audiences from Boston to Leadville on the principles of aesthetics and becoming a popular celebrity in the process. Wilde found himself growing inordinately fond of Americans. A less unlikely love match could scarcely be imagined."

Simmons writes great history-of-travel books. I first discovered him with Castaway in Paradise: The Incredible Adventures of True-Life Robinson Crusoes. I recommend these books to anyone looking for a great read that's based on fact.

Great laughter & cute cartoons to overcome "numerical" fear!
This book is a great hoot for those who can laugh at their fears of numerical weakness. Do not be misled to be serious about the title. Humorist Will Roger's said that we are all ignorant, just different subjects. Well, ... Myles Hollander and Frank Proschan, exorcise that ignorance away with their charming wit and deep insights. They both are internationally renowned academic scholars in the science called Statistics, with Professor Proschan having retired and enjoying writing children's stories for his grandchildren, etc. Think of spirits like Dr. Seuss writing about quantitative thinking. So see the light and lighten up with your silly fears about numbers, probabilities and reason with more quantitative confidence after reading this truly playful book. Enjoy thinking better!

A readable intro to Statistics
I liked this better than "Elementary Statistics" by Triola or "Elementary Statistics" by Bluman. Those two have more human interest sidebars, more color, and more fluff. They also require additional software and study guides to get the best from the book.

Frank and Althoen are all business and their business is to get you to the point that you can do statistics and understand it. The authors do a nice job of presenting a mathematic subject. There are lots of examples, clearly worked out. The examples and student problems are with small enough data sets that you can work through them easily without getting lost in calculations.

This book is 850 pages. black and white. self contained. no photos, no side bars, and just enough graphs and charts. It's full of text that is well crafted and gently pulls you along through a lot of statistical "Concepts and Applications".

This book assumes you know algebra but not calculus.

Humor by no other name
After enjoying DL Stewart humor in the local newspaper for years, it is hard to imagine finding better quality humor writing anywhere. Stewart, in this book, combines the wit and sarcasm of his of his collumn with the vivd observation of his newly integrated family in, arguably, one of the funniest books ever. Few humor books are much more than amusing, whereas this one should contain a warning not to read while trying to go to sleep. I laughed so hard, out loud with eyes watering, that my sides would hurt for a full day afterwards. As a 20 year old college student I would highly recomend this book to anyone, as it relates parents to kids to pets to life in such a humorous manner, any audience could enjoy it.
