Where's Charley?, A kids point of view
I am 13 and I played "Amy" in our school production of "Where's Charley?". So I decided to rate this book. I really liked it!!! These have grown to be my favorite songs while doing this show. Whers's Charley is about two Oxford students, Charley Wyckhem and Jack Chesney, who invite two girls Amy and Kitty to a graduation dance, The Red Rose Cotillion. Their intension is to propose, but a randition of the song "Better get out of here" reveals differant ones. In the meantime, Jacks father, Sir Francis Chesney reveals to Jack that they are poor and are in serious debt. Jack suggests that he try to marry Charley's aunt, Donna Lucia D'alvadorez, who is rich and is supposed to come and be the chaperone for the girls. She is late showing up and since the girls won't stay without a chaperone, Charley is forced to dress like his aunt. To make matters worse, the girls garrdian, Mr.Spettigue shows up demanding that the girls return home. In order for the girls to stay, charley has to allow himself to be woed by Mr. Spettigue. This leads to one of the funniest songs in the show, "Serenade With Asides". Charley does find time to spend some time with Amy through all this. They sing a charming duet called "Make a Miricle". He also has time to sing about her in one of the plays better known songs, "Once in Love with Amy". Jack, his room mate and friend keeps the romance going with Kitty in the song "My Darling My Darling" In the process of trying to woo Donna Lucia (who is really charley dressed as her)Sir Francis Chesney meets the real one. After a series of questions she senses what is going on and decides to play along in her nephews little game. She does not not reveal her true identity to Sir Francis. She introduces herself as simpley Lucy. As luck would have it, Sir Francis and "Lucy" were once sweethearts back when they were seventeen. They rekindle this romance in the balled "Lovlier The Ever" Meanwhile Amy is furious that Charley has not been with her. (She does not know that Charley is masqurading as his aunt) She jumps to the conclusion that he is with another woman, and expresses all her anger in the song "Woman in His Room". Will everything work out for all three couples or will it just fall apart. You'll have to read the book and research the movie to find out!!!

Whims, Twists and Fancies

The ultimate in short story entertainment!
A tapestry of well told tales, WHIMS TWISTS and FANCIES is for me the ultimate compendium of assorted short stories that etches itself into the top ten. The character of Gramma in 'The Invitation' will not soon be forgotten. The loneliness of an old man in 'Another Year,' waiting in vain for a family visit, is a moving portrayal. I laughed aloud at the antics of the gentleman saddled with an unwanted date in "An Ethical Easement,' and the moral in 'Flaherty's Flute' set me pondering over another solution. All the stories are crisply told, the style is pleasing, and the total enjoyment is thoroughly satisfying.

A book with depth
a book with depth I find in this book so many attributes of preservation of more than just wildlife. The book tells a great story of a man's dream, a kid's growth, and about how a bird brought them together. The man was real and was influential in bringing a lot of publicity to a beautiful place and a beautiful bird where I grew up as this man's son. this is a fitting tribute to him and all he cared about, before his time was up as it's caretaker. Especially when he never asked for the credit, or prestige for himself for what he considered a privilege and part of his job as a human on this planet.

Feels like you're there.
John Muir is simply the best naturalist writer I have ever read. His writing is clear, descriptive and interesting. I typically don't like this type of writing, but his essays make you hear, see, taste and smell the outdoors. I usually like to experience nature directly, but Muir is the next best thing to being there. A collection of his best works is presented here.

A Potpourri of Styles
I used The Wilderness Reader in teaching a course in stewardship and field ecology for teachers. I found that the book contained a wide variety of different types of environmental writing and that all of the selected pieces were excellent examples of the genre. Several of my elementary school teachers even read parts of the reader to their students.

Everyone should read at least one of Frankl's books
This book and Frankl's other popular book, "Man's search for meaning" offer a great deal of overlap. Yet I fond both extrememlty interesting and helpful. Frankl posits that we all have an innate tendency to mental/spiritual health which he calls the will to meaning. This is similar to the body's hedency to heal after any physical assault. He explains that good counselling focusses the will to meaning, or removes blocks which are preventing it from being expressed. Frankl's experiences in a NAZI death camp show how focussing on personal meaning and what little freedom of choice one does have, can enable mental health to survive even under the most pathogenic of circumstances.
