A decent read on Napoleon's final banishment
This is quite a decent read on the treatment Napoleon received at the hands of his "...most consistent and generous foe, the British". A balanced account is what Mr Giles has stroved for and the coverage is generally admirable. Napoleon's jailer comes across as a more humane person than history has given him credit for.
I din't care much for the last part of the book which focussed on various poems written by great men of letters to explain the Napoleonic myth as I felt that such coverage was either too narrow or irrelevant to the overall British perception of Napoleon.

Fascinating research, wanting for a story
Mr. Giles gives us a great work, obviously carefully footnoted with very meticulous references, full of very interesting tidbits about British perceptions of Napoleon's stay on St. Helena. I left it, however, wishing for more than the historical details, wanting for more color about the participants, their own stories and experiences. The character of Sir Hudson Lowe does not come through clearly, despite the book's stated goal of demonstrating his relative innocence in the supposedly cruel treatment of Napoleon. There are many details, but Mr. Giles leaves it to us, based on the facts presented, to muster an image of the gaoler. Perhaps that is his intention---perhaps that is good historical documentation. That said, his description of the Lord and Lady Hollands feelings, again based on thorough first hand information, is excellent and insightful, perhaps especially due to their ample and descriptive writings. For Napoleon buffs, this one is--if not a nail-biter---a good essay on one aspect of his life.

Thin picture of people seeking to be significant
While I agree with Steffanie Gibbons' view that the Waters' memoir is well-written, in that it flows with the pen of an accomplished writer, but I cannot not agree with a rating of five stars. The "intimate" picture portrayed gives a thin image of his artist friends. Moreover this picture is one of, somewhat desperate, people seeking to be significant as artists, but coming off more like hangers-on. After reading the book, Taos has lost much of the well manicured luster as an artist center, and comes off more like a tourist trap.

Intimate glimpses
In this well-written memoir, Frank Waters shares intimate details of his friendships with many of the artists who lived in Taos, New Mexico during the Mabel Dodge Luhan era. A pulitzer prize-winning author, Waters uses his talent with the pen to acquaint the reader with his artist friends in Taos and tell his own life story. Waters also shares his exploration of the history of Native Americans in the Four Corners area. If anyone is qualified to write about the art world in Taos at that time, it is certainly Frank Waters. A must-read for those interested in the Southwest.

one community with which Olmsted was involved
Though the title uses Olmsted's name as a valuable advertisement, the book does little to describe Olmsted's design values. This book instead details the genesis of a community and the exodus of Olmsted's values. While the book is a fine history of one community's development, do not purchase this book because of Olmsted's involvement on the project.

Making Olmsted Real in a Residential Community
This book is an outstanding work of scholarship in documenting how Olmsted's design principles were used to create a community. It is fascinating how the original design was maintained in spite of the fact that the original developer went bankrupt. This is the first book that I have found that doesn't dwell on Olmsted and Central Park but Olmsted and a neighborhood that still exists.

Cliff's Quick Review Organic Chemistry I
Though thorough and accurate, it does not have any sample problems and solutions, which is part of why I purchased this book.

Helpful Basic Knowledge
This book is a great source of background information and will provide a great starting point for organic chemistry. I would suggest reading it prior to taking a course, or using it as reference.

World War 1 Illustration
Very Good photo illustrations of WW 1. I found this book in a used book store. The copyright date on this issue is MCMLXIV.

A fun way to learn about World War I
At first, I thought this book was another general survey of World War I. While reading the prose, I felt as if I actually experienced the war. The pictures greatly added to the realistic presentation and my reading enjoyment.

The Paths of Soaring Flight

Interesting, but heavy slogging
I'm a glider pilot but no math whiz. Although Paths of Soaring Flight explains things like Reynolds Number and Pressure Distribution, it sounds so arcane to my ear that I have trouble wrapping my mind around the material. Maybe if I was more mathematical this book would be more fun. But even my ignorant tail-feathers learned a few things, and you might, too.

The paths of soaring flight
Most gliding readers will find this heavy going. More a reference book than a great read! Nice little titbits and packed with insights. However only for those of a mathematical bent - lots of formula requiring advanced A level knowledge of calculus. I would have written it differently with the text in plain English and the maths as a supplement for those requiring more detailed understanding. I regret that my maths is far too limited to have a true understanding of how some of the concepts are derived. A pity as I suspect that I am in the majority and reasonably intelligent, if mathematically no Einstein. I suspect that most readers will be put off my the text. It fails my Noddy test - reduce advanced concepts into simple terms that any gnome can understand. It could have been done but was not!

Better suited to the nurses than the doctors
The pedagogy of Pediatric Cardiology is already well covered by two masterfully written texts: Moss and Garson. They are, admittedly, tough acts to follow. A clinically oriented text, directed specifically toward the difficult problems encountered in the intensive care setting, however, would be appreciated. This text attempts to fill that need.

Not surprisingly, pediatric cardiac Intensive care is largely dedicated to perioperative management of congenital heart disease, and this text approaches it in this manner. After the expected chapters in monitoring, pharmacology and so on, large sections are devoted to preoperative care, operative considerations and posoperative care. There is a generic discussion of extracorporeal support and dialysis. The text ends with consideration of social and ethical issues,

I had hoped, when I read this book that it would enhance and expand the information found in general texts. For example, I know the litany of agents used for sedating posoperative patients. What I would like is some discussion of which is useful in a given set of circumstances, and how each might intereact with other aspects of care. Does any provide a specific advantage in a given clinical situation or represent a unique hemodynamic risk? This text generally does not explore cardiac care in this depth.

The text does have its strengths. The descriptions of surgical repair are well done and the illustrations of them are clear. They would be very useful in describing the surgical procedure to parents or staff. The generic approach is most useful to nursing staff and respiratory therapists, especially those just orienting to the PCCU.

Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is a well organized general text on the subject. Its approach is best suited to the nursing staff. Cardiac fellows, attendings and cardiac intensivists will find little here that expands their knowledge.

Multidisciplinary
What I liked most about this book was it's multidisciplinary aproach and down-to-earth explanations. Wer good dravings of the procedures. It lost one star since it was not easy to find information by surgical procedure.

Not very good intro to subject
When I had this book for a class in graduate school, I found that it never really helped me with any of the problems, and in general did not describe the topics well at all. I would recommend sticking to Rybicki and Lightman for a much better exposition.

Excellent
I was very dissapointed to see a rating on this book of only two little stars, so I've decided to express my opinion as well, for I believe this book deserves a much better qualification. The book gives an excellent overview in many of the most important aspects of the theory of gas dynamics as applied to astrophysics. The clarity with which the author expresses the underlying physical phenomena is amazing. You even find it "easy" the way in which fluid equations are deduced by taking the different momenta of the statistical distribution function of the fluid, or why a supersonic flow governed by a hyperbolic PDE is converted to a subsonic one governed by an elliptic PDE after passage through a shock wave in the stationary case. It's true that it doesn't go into too much detail; if it would, the book should have been at least of the size of the "Gravitation" (by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler) and it wouldn't easily fit anywhere. However, the references to excellent books on all the touched subjects have been meticulously selected and should be consulted by anyone interested in expanding the knowledge on any specific topic of the ones covered by the book. And for your curiosity, if you want to know whether Mr. Shu is a competent astrophysicist or not, just go to the Astronomical Data Service online and search for his name. You'll discover quite a big number of high quality papers on different subjects...

Police Field Operations
Too vague and general for someone using the book to use as a reference. Does not go into a lot of key points you actually use on patrol. Also, tends to make remarks that do not reflect the reality of todays police work. The author seems out of touch with policing today.

Very basic, good book
I had to read this book for a promotional examination and found it to be a good refresher of the very basic points that we all learned at the beginning of our police careers. When I am approached by someone who is not yet in police work and wants to read a good, simply written and understandable book on law enforcement, I always recommend this one. It may seem to be too basic for those of us in this field for the years I have served, but many areas are still very relevant.

Not Enough Depth
This book falls into the category of books that provide a survey of a field, useful for a beginner but certainly not for an advanced network administrator or cabling installer. For example, I needed to send instructions to an electrician at a remote site in Alaska on basic cabling techniques so that he could set up a small LAN using best practices. Unfortunately, this book lacked a basic procedure on how to punch down strands of 4-pair on to a punch down block. Another example, the 568a / 568b issues are poorly explained. Therefore, if you need real, hands-on information for an implementation, then move on to another book, perhaps one from BCSI, or perhaps the Sybex book by Groth and McBee.

Excellent Resource for Network Administrators
An excellent source for network schemes, cabling options and investments in cabling. Derfler's book contains many vivid diagrams of cable and the book is easy to navigate and understand
