A critical look at thirty years of William Loeb's newspaper.
A scathing chronicle of William and Nackey Loeb's tenure at the Manchester Union-Leader, New Hampshire's largest newspaper. The only paper with statewide circulation, Loeb took advantage of his monopoly to become a spoiler in national politics. The book covers Loeb's acquisition of the paper, its mismanagement, his adulterous affair with Scripps-Howard heiress Nackey Gallowhur, and the use of the paper for their personal vendettas. Sadly it's a little outdated since William died c. 1980 and it doesn't cover Nackey's involvement of the paper in Pat Buchanan's presidential campaigns in the 1990's. Still, it's still a bold critique, especially when you consider it was written at a time when Loeb had virtual blacklist power in the state.

Interesting for fans of pro football's golden age
Frank Gifford's autobiography is a fairly interesting book that isn't dry like so many sports biographies are. I found it to be a pretty good read and learned quite a bit I hadn't known before about The Giff.

Gifford covers his tough nomadic childhood, his rise to fame at USC, his years as a New York Giant playing in five NFL title games, his experience trying to break into the Hollywood scene, his eventual transition into broadcasting, and of course the Monday Night Football years. He also spends a lot of time at the end of the book gushing over Kathie Lee. Unfortunately this was written prior to his infamous indiscretions of the mid-1990s; it would be interesting to read his side of that story.... oh well.

Overall I'd say "The Whole Ten Yards" is an above average sports biography. If you were a fan of MNF's first quarter-decade or of the old Giants of the 1950s & early 1960s, you will probably enjoy this book.

This is the way to tell a story! I felt like I was there, was really grabbed by this one. This book graces the otherwise limp, fluffy fantasy/sci-fi shelves.

All things considered he hit his mark
Very enjoyable reading, particularly the quotations in the various sections. The book flows very easily and the sense of humor behind the enterprise is excellent. However, I find too many inaccuracies in the information presented. The inaccuracies are not enough to reduce the pleaure of reading this book. But do not use this as an ultimate source for settling a bet.

Reflections at Sea
Legend has it, writes the author, that a person upon retirement must have some activity immediately following to look forward to, for the sake of his own well being. For Buckley, that activity was his fourth transatlantic crossing.

When this book came out in 1991, Buckley had retired as editor-in-chief from National Review, the magazine he founded over thirty years before. He was also celebrating the 40th anniversary of his marriage and his graduation from Yale. These landmarks likely account for the book's occasionally wistful tone. But although Windfall has as its backdrop the sweeping Atlantic Ocean, the focus more often is on the community in which he has traveled -- what the original conservative, Edmund Burke, called our "little platoons."

Buckley and his crew set sail on a 4400 mile voyage from Lisbon to Barbados, via the trade winds and southwesterly course that Columbus followed some 500 years ago. Given his landmark year, and that this probably be his last transatlantic crossing, it is significant that Buckley chose to navigate the route to the New World. At a church in San Sebastian, he prays for a safe passage, marvelling at the genuine faith Columbus had in an uncertain future.

In the introduction Buckley writes that the 30 days ahead would contain "moments of boredom, of frustration, of irritation, of near-despair" but that "these are inevitable to long ocean passages as pain is learning, despondency to writing, loneliness to love."

Buckley outlines the importance of choosing the proper crew. Much of pleasure of the book comes from how that crew interacts. They keep watch and steer according to a regimented schedule. They drink, play chess, tell jokes, and listen to music. At times they bicker, but they always pull together. Out in the unpredictable sea, left to their own devices, their dependence on each other is so obvious that it is unspoken. Excerpts from the crew's logbooks provide glimpses into their thoughts and feelings.

There are occasional digressions to Buckley's retirement speech, to a botched harpsichord performance with the Phoenix Symphony, and to days at Yale. But perhaps they are not really digressions, since the purpose of the voyage, when time and weather permit, was to reflect on what came before and to give thanks for a multitude of blessings.

Some Timeless, Some Outdated
Many of the articles (columnist for New York Times) in this book are outdated -- many of the wines are no longer good, the prices have tripled, many of the restaurants are no longer around, etc. However, many of the articles are timeless. They give the same advice that the current experts are giving, but in a more easily read presentation. For that, I would give it five stars, but the outdated articles pull it down to four stars. Worth checking out, especially for avid readers of wine material.

Simplicity
I am going to college right now, trying to learn about what I am going to be doing for the rest of my life. I don't have time to learn a whole new subject, and that's what I like about this book. It tells me what I need to eat and I eat it. Simple.

excellent book for beginning show jumping
Frank Chapot, a legendary horseman in the equestrian world, brings his many years of experience to paper in this wonderful book for those looking to win in the jumper ring. From choosing the correct horse and bringing that horse to qaulity show level, chapot explains the equipment, training and personal mind state one must have to succeed in the competitive world of show jumping. There is a great question and answer section in the back of the book, and anecdotes from frank's experiences scattered here and there. The only draw back i found was that I wished he had spent more time on the training section of horse and rider, this is not a book for complete beginners.

GREAT BOOK!
This book is 100 years old, but as Angela Lansbury (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, MURDER SHE WROTE, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS, THE WIZARD OF OZ: 50 YEARS OF MAGIC, etc) once said "you can hear the story and a million times isn't enough." This timeless tale is one you will enjoy indefinatly!
