Great contrast with DeSoto
By way of contrast with "The Mystery of Capitalism" by DeSoto, this book (read May 28) on this same topic is reviews events after the collapse of communism in Russia and details the movement toward capitalism. It looks at seven eastern European countries. It looks like it offers a more balanced view than the DeSoto book. There are good sections on the issue of property (p. 41) and how those issues are being fought over. In Russia, for example, they go over the various groups that have grabbed the property - ex- communists, mafias, etc.

Patient ants will eventually enjoy higher standards of living than impatient crickets. Optimum levels of consumption are below the maximum - must save for the future. Topics: why private markets work, growth models.

Psychology of Creativity
This was by far one of the greatest books that I have ever read on psychology. It was funny, touching, sweet, but most of all thought provoking. As an aspiring artist, it helped me to comprehend myself a little better. The book is a compilation of essays, interviews, and writings by different creative individuals. From the flamboyant Maya Angenlou to the brilliant Federico Fellini. Probably the most moving and amusing segment of the book was the segment written by Frank Zappa, who explains creativity in a way that no other could. Sure genius.

Creole Cookin' from the Heart of New Orleans

The best recipes I've seen out of New Orleans!
Although there are only 31 recipes in this cookbook they are some of the best and unusual I've tried. Some examples are Chicken File Gumbo, Creole Stuffed Onions, Oysters/Artichoke Soup, etc. They are from the authors family and neighborhood. Anyone who is familiar with true New Orleans style cooking knows that the heart of its cooking is in the small neighborhoods that make up the city. The author uses a simple guide for cooks that I find very unique. Its based on two keys. The first being the time that a recipe takes to complete and second on the degree of difficulty. This made it easy for me when returning from work to decide on which recipe I wanted to tackle. The cover of the book is a water color of a Creole lady holding a basket of veggies. It is nice for framing.

Excellent Intro to Criminal Justice textbook!
This book is used as the textbook for Indiana University Bloomington's Intro to criminal justice class (P100). As a freshman taking this course, I find the book extremely interesting and easy to read. I would highly recommend that instructors for Criminal Justice look at this book for an introductory course.

Criticism in Society: Interviews With Jacques Derrid, Northrop Frye, Harold Bloom, Geoffrey Hartman, Frank Kermode, Edward Said, Barbara Johnson, Fra
Published in Paperback by Routledge (Import) (April, 1989)

An excellent compilation of contemporary ideas
Interviews are a very rare genre in literary criticism. However, Salusinszky created an astounding gathering of the top critics in the U.S. The book is not based necessarily on individual interviews, because the points of view of one critic about the others are included. This, of course, allows a clear, direct source on the opinions that Said has on Bloom or Lentricchia on Hartman. A must have for anybody looking for a comprehensive and personal approach to contemporary critics.

Fresh perspective on Western philosophy
Very well written book that provides a sweeping, fresh perspective on the whole history of philosophy including formal logic and the mythology of higher mathematics. Of particular note is his treatment of Wittgenstein, especially how his internalized homophobia might have colored his views.

Telling It Like It Is...or a picture is worth a 1,000 words!
An extremely well written book with lots of pictures and charts. I used it to sail my 28' boat from Coconut Grove to Key West with my wife and 9 month old son. It's great for gunkholing and points out many of the unknown facts about the local area. And besides, Frank's a nice man...I can say that on authority as I have an autographed copy.
