Nice Chronicler of Centennial American Golf
Great record of game. Worth having just for the photo collection and memorabilia displayed.

The writing is outstanding and shows the birth of the game on American soil to start of USGA, professionals, ladies entering game, to architects, to players, and literature.

Especially enjoy the watercolors of the 100 Heroes of American Golf and the accompanying writeups.

More bang for the buck
I have a golf library -- much of it is too technical to read in the evening. And it seems every author their own technique -- that's about 100 techniques so far! If my body could do what the drawings illustrate, I would give up golf and become a male model! This book is different. It's simple. It's direct. It has pictures, not drawings! It's layout is totally unimaginative, making it easy to read and use. About every other page is a post it note to remind myself why I do what I do when I do it so I won't do it anymore. I guess I love this little book, after all, I have just written my fist Amazon review ever!

Amazing Book!
The book Gotch:An American Hero is extremely well-written.Chapman is VERY descriptive. His use of details puts the reader right in the middle of the action. He conveys emotions very well.Even though it is a historical novel, the book is full of information about the world of professional wrestling in the early 1900s. If I could have given it more than five stars,I certainly would.Mike Chapman has written a very impressive book. I urge all people interested in the history of wrestling to read this.

The Best Nursing "War Story" Book Ever
This book was written by my friend Richard. He's the funniest guy I know. I heard all of these stories and I said "Richard, you should write a book" and the rest is history. This book tells it like it is and is a funny description of what life is really like in the ER. He lets you know just how hard the doctors and nurses laugh at you when you come into the ER with silly problems. If you really want to laugh about nursing "war stories" in the ER, then this is the book for you. If you can't find a copy, ask Richard he has a few thousand. thx WHS

Finally a book that makes sense out of Christianity.
This is an important book. It takes all the things in Christianity that give different religions fodder for disagreement and tosses them out. Instead, the reader gets a concise outline of what Jesus was really about. We all talk about loving our neighbors as ourselves, nonjudgment, and honesty but have no idea how to make these idealistic precepts work. This book shows us how and what happens to us to make it all possible. It is simple and easy to understand. Not only that it just makes good sense. Whether you are a Christian or not, you will treasure this little book.

Super Read!
This book was excellent! The author writes about one of her own waiting experiences, but generalizes her learning so that the reader can easily apply it to their own experience. While you may not be ready to move through all the waiting stages as you read the book, it is helpful to know what the stages should be...then you can set future goals for yourself and recognize your growth.

Grammatical Roles and Relations
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (April, 1994)
Author: Frank Robert Palmer
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

excellent
Writing linguistic textbooks is not easy. Given that the intended audience is usually undergraduate students, you are supposed to start from the basics, you cannot assume any previous knowledge of the topics covered and you have to go to extreme lengths (literally) to make sure that the main ideas and issues are clear. All this does not mean that you can be divulgative, on the contrary, the use in university courses prevents you from using an informal, discursive style and requires you to explain all the necessary terminology and the (sometimes very technical) analyses proposed in the literature. In the field of linguistics, then, the textbook is supposed to do what in other disciplines is attained by at least four other books (or courses): explain the foundations and goals of the field, be a technical introduction to the discipline, be a reference book, where you can look up things you have forgotten, and finally also act as an intermediate course, which can enable you to go on to read the specialised literature on your own. Needless to say, the result is often a clumsy 600 pages monstrosity which manages to be dry, shallow, dispersive and incomplete at the same time. Trying to acquire a vast and technical discipline from such a book alone can be a very frustrating experience, as those of us who tried to teach themselves linguistics (or a subfield of it) by reading textbooks on their own know only too well. It is therefore all the more remarkable what professor emeritus Frank Palmer has achieved with this book. It provides a thorough and clear discussion of the notion of Grammatical Relation (such as Subject, Object etc.) and the much more difficult one of Grammatical Role (such as Agent, Patient, etc.), and uses them to analyse a wide variety of typologically different languages. This alone would have been a monumental achievement, but professor Palmer goes on to discuss how Grammatical Roles and Relations are matched in the world's languages, which means discussing vast and thorny topics like Case Systems, and to illustrate the mechanisms, such as the passive, that languages use to switch the identities between Role and Relation. To cover all this material with clarity and in less than 300 pages you have to be very sure of what you want to say, and professor Palmer certainly is, but even if he has his own theory about these topics, and argues it clearly and convincingly, he refrains from imposing it on recalcitrant data. On the contrary, he often quotes alternative analyses, showing the pros and cons of each one. This kind of theory neutral approach to such complicated issues could have produced a confusing and inconclusive comparison of badly summarised theories, but professor Palmer always manages to focus on the relevant issues and clearly show the different consequences of each approach. It is really impossible to understate the richness in ideas and data contained in this book: the reader will learn about fairly exotic languages (some of them not familiar even to professional linguists: I must admit I had never heard of "Awngi" (p. 231) before) and grammatical devices (such as the Antipassive, Active Systems, Split Ergativity etc.) which are discussed only in the most specialised publications. What is more important, she will be able to place all these data in a precise and comprehensive theory, with which the reader can go on to explore these fascinating topics on her own.

Short story collection of life in Rochester, NY in 1800s
Samuel Hopkins Adams, the author, grew up in Rochester, NY, where he was privileged to know both his grandfathers. His grandfathers Adams and Hopkins lived in the 19th Ward of Rochester during the early 1800s. They both shared stories of life in that period and what it was like to work on building "Clinton's ditch," more commonly known as the Erie Canal. This is a wonderful collection of short stories, written in a warm style, using intriguing words and expressions that arouse one's curiosity &, more often than not, had me scurrying to the dictionary for clarification as to meaning. The stories themselves are easily accessible and convey a wonderful sense of place and ambiance behind the stories.

These are great stories to read aloud to 10- and 11-year-old children or even to read, curled up in bed, after a stressful day. Just the antidote the doctor ordered!

See Your Grandmother's Soul in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom
There's a story told about a Buddhist monk who could look into your eyes and see your grandmother's soul. The collaboration between author Howard Frank Mosher and photographer John M. Miller, called "Granite & Cedar: The People and the Land of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom" gives the common reader a chance for a similar view. This remarkable book gives a profound opportunity to see into and beyond the familiar of "home."
"Granite & Cedar" is set in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom; the black and white photographs (most taken between 1971 and 1976) represent a simpler time when the region was a world unto itself. Then the Interstate rolled through, and it was suddenly easier to have second homes here. Long-time residents could come and go with ease, and the world of the Northeast Kingdom changed. Patterns of life shifted, and familiar traditions suddenly reappeared as people, places and ways that were different.
Mosher's haunting story of Aunt Jane Hubbell weaves through the photographs like hand washed thread turning into fine lace. The story opens in 1965 as the plans for the Interstate are introduced. Aunt Jane has fierce stubbornness and loyalty to family, both living and dead. Will she stand up to the engineers at the public hearing for the highway, or will she back down in deference to her 78 years and ancestors lying at rest? How will she be remembered?
We see the time-worn buildings standing tall beside symbols of an emerging era of rapid obsolescence; we see wool jackets and spruce boards holding their ground to synthetic fleece and vinyl siding; we see men and women whose lives and ways are somehow very familiar although today - they are gone.
We see into a place and time well used by those who lived off the land and were shaped by it and who like Aunt Jane were, above all, practical. Mosher and Miller have unwrapped the gift we thought unique to the legendary monk.
For those with connections to the Northeast Kingdom "Granite & Cedar" will be tenderly familiar. And yet strictly regional, this book is not. For those who only know Vermont's fringe from a distance, the connection to home will prevail.
"Granite & Cedar" is Mosher and Miller at their best.

Great Cats (Majestic Creatures of the Wild)

From the jacket
The great cats reign supreme among the world's most fascinating creatures. Representations of these animals have been evident throughout human history from the prehistoric cave paintings of France to the tomb of Tutankhamen, from the proud lion of Piazza San Marco in Venice to the haunting rhythms of Blake's "Tyger, tyger burning bright." So sleek and self-sufficient, these relatives of the domestic cat all share the instinct to hunt, to survive, and to master their environment.

Truly unique and magnificent, Great Cats is a book about all the cats from the well-known lion and tiger to the rare and elusive kodkod and Andean mountain cat. Great Cats documents the latest discoveries about the origins of cats, and about their form and function. In addition the book explores the historic and present relationship between cats and people.

The stories of all the cats are complemented by a stunning collection of over 200 full- color photographs and illustrations. A specially commissioned, original painting of each species of cat is featured together with individual maps showing the most recent distribution of all the species.

Most importantly, Great Cats draws our attention to the conservation prospects of the cats today, 16 of the 37 cat species, and one or more subspecies of other species, are threatened or in danger of extinction. With the development of the conservation movement and a growing awareness of the fragility of wildlife, the cats have become increasingly valued and protected in many parts of the world. This is only a beginning, however, and to ensure that the great cats survive in the wild, we must all learn more about these magnificent animals. Great Cats provides a rare and special insight into the lives of some of nature's most captivating creatures.
