Pillars of Pentecost
Enlightening book about the personalities behind the early twentieth century outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Unknown by most, these men and women of God helped to lay a foundation for the church today and the coming great revival. The stories related by some of these missionaries as they trekked through foreign lands will keep you interested. The book ends with a future vision of the harvest from Smith Wigglesworth and an account by Lester Sumrall. An incredible vision that is still ahead of us. The chapter on Smith Wigglesworth, and Lester Sumrall's acquaintances with him is worth the price of the book alone!

Good source of information on the cults of Isis and Osiris
This volume of Plutarch's Moralia describes the legend and cult of Isis and Osiris, as referred to by my book Vampires or Gods? It is a very interesting look at a major cult during the late imperial period of the Roman Empire. - William Meyers

The Reality of Community Policing
Ed Reed examined the rhetoric versus the reality of community policing in Seattle BEFORE the World Trade Organization fiasco exposed it to the world. He has also got important things to say about community policing generally. This is a book that deserves a wide audience.

Milburn's Emperor's Account
Milburn does a marvelous job of discussing the history surrounding the game of Polo. While failing to examine the play of the game itself, Milburn does present an astute assesment of polo's past, present and future. Most noteworthy, is Milburn's astute representation of the origins of the sport. From the "noble" birth of the game to the dangers presented by its initiation into the world of modern professional sports, Milburn presents the reader with a brilliant and relatively objective view of the game. He avoids further facilitation of the aristocratic aura surrounding the sport and notes that increasingly, it is becoming a sport for all classes. He also, rather bravely, notes the inherent dangers of the sport, thus also dispelling any dellusions one might have as to the nobility of a game played solely by kings and princes. In doing so, he is able to instill a sense of reality into a sport that may seem larger than life. Finally, Milburn emphasizes that the sport is about the play itself and not about an image. By retaining this ideal, the game of polo can continue indefinately as a gentleman's sport.

History of the Cold Fusion of the Late Sixties
Felix Franks recounts the story of one of the more embarrassing fallacies of established science: polywater. During the sixties, some Russian scientists found experimental evidence of what they assumed to be long range order in specially prepared samples of water. Scientist in the west were not to be outdone (their interest perhaps fueled by the ongoing cold war), and soon similar research was a hot topic in Europe and USA. The term polywater was coined for this 'polymerized' form of water, and some spectacular claims were made concerning its properties, which even reached ordinary media. Franks follows this development, and also what happens in the next step when the fad dies out after being discredited by more thorough investigations. The story is of interest to scientist of all fields and people interested in the scientific method as an example of how science can go astray. The subject matter makes it particularly amusing for physical/inorganic chemists.

"An Essay on Man" is a wonderfully written satire.
"An Essay on Man" was one of Pope's finest pieces. It has great satirical points with true to life meanings. The piece's discussion on religion and virtue was the best I have yet to find. I gave the writing four of five stars because it was the best work I have ever read that came out of the time period. Pope should always be remembered as the greatest satirical writer ever in my mind.

a feel-good book!
The title of the book says it all. Notice how "controversy" or "queer" are not in the title; it's neither just a debate or some postmodern radicalism. This book is best for gay men and lesbians just coming out. It's all about being positive about supporting gay rights and being a part of the community and coming out to straights. I particularly liked this book for its section on lesbians and gay men of color. This was a nice, easily read anthology.

Techo-thriller in the genre of Robert Ludlum & Tom Clancy
Chris Brennan, a senior executive with a Southwestern electric utility company, rebels against an antinuclear administration in Washington and a newly resurgent antinuclear environmental group to order a pair of nuclear power plants. The plot, with good character development has enough suspense, sex and gore to keep you turning pages clear to the end; volcanoes erupt; terrorists attack; operators strike; plants trip; even subjects like alcoholism and existential philosophy are incorporated. This is the first pronuclear-power novel ever written and a good read
