A SUCCESS CLASSIC from a proactive business leader!
Frank Bettger has played a huge role in helping me to be successful in business. Although he has been gone for years, his ideas live in us through putting his ideas into practice. I consider him a success mentor because his wisdom is easy to follow - but more than that it is right on! I started out as an engineer and a very timid salesman. Bettger has helped to change that. I guarantee that if you read this book you will be a changed person - it's that incredible. Even before you finish it the first time (you will probably read it several times) you will have a clear vision on how to be successful.

Bettger covers all of the proactive bases: smart thinking, system thinking, futuristic thinking, and positive thinking. If you are truly seeking the kind of success and abundance that makes your life 100% livable - you must read this book. Many of his ideas are found in SUCCESS BOUND, another book built on learning how to live a proactively life that is God centered and fulfilling.

Everything that I have put into practice that Bettger has recommended in his books has worked. He has brought me success by focusing on what is important in selling and using my God given talents and my thinking ability to be a better salesman.

You will find that this exciting book becomes a part of you. Don't hold back - let it happen. In fact, spend 10 to 15 minutes every morning for the next several days focusing your thoughts on the truths of this book, thereby allowing them to seep deep into your subconscious mind. If you do this I guarantee God's wisdom will most assuredly bring you the success and abundance you deserve.

Enjoy this book and your new proactive and successful life!

The best book ever written by man for man!
What title do you write for such a book? I have only praise for Bettger's book. The fact that it is a book written for salesmen should not keep anybody from reading it. In my life as a salesman, businessman and man no book (aside from the Bible)has helped me as much as this. If everybody applied its insight in human nature the world be a so much better and happier palce to live.

Simply a must-read for ANY salesman, businessman, manager or person that wants improve his/her results in interactions with other people.

BY FAR THE BOOK THAT HAS HAD THE VASTEST IMPACT ON MY LIFE AN CAREER! It doesn't get better than this!

The finest book on selling I've ever read
As a long time sales trainer, I've had opportunity to teach over 300 salespeople. As a part of that training I regularly use this book. Every person I've ever recommended this book to has stated that it is without a doubt the finest sales book they've ever read.

Bettger's writing style makes the book an easy read, and the information contained in the book is practical and easy to apply. For anyone in the sales profession, or those considering a future career, this book should be a part of your library

Whoa, mama!
Whether you collect pop-up books or have never opened one before, please check this one out! This is Robert Sabuda, getting better every year, at his best. The abridged text is true to Baum's original, meaning that if you only know the movie you'll find differences. There's more text than in a lot of pop-up books, which is fine with me, since pop-ups make such good "out-loud" reading. But what pop-ups! The first pages open with a twisting cyclone! There's a full layout of the Emerald City, and there's a scene depicting the launch of the hot-air balloon. He's even included a pair of emerald green "glasses." And there are mini-pop-ups throughout. Honestly, I think you will fall in love with this puppy. And think about all the people on your gift list who are kids at heart and would love to experience this book.

"Magical experience"
I collect children's books that are "special" and added this book to my collection as one of my favorites! The experience of looking through the pop-ups can only be described as a "magical experience". The illustrations are done in a nostalgic format with vivid colors. The first page really grabbed me...when you open it up a tornato rises up in a whirling motion and goes completely off of the page. There is fine detail (look under the house in "Munchkinland" and you will actually see the wicked witches feet underneath). Emerald City pops up and actually glitters before your eyes (you would swear it was really made of emeralds)! Oz's hot air balloon rises out of one page and spins in suspension. This is more of a collector book and I would not recommend putting it in the hands of a young child to do with as he/she pleases! It is just too beautiful! But, you would definately have fun viewing/reading the book to a young child...and a child of seven or eight would probably be old enough to care for it! There are also several small pop-ups within the sections you open up and read that are quite charming! There is quite alot of story to read within small sections of the pages, or within flaps that open up. But; if you are a collector of "Oz" memorabilia, or love creative pop-up books... this book would be a great addition to your family!

Talk about eye-candy! This book is marvelous!
My parents bought this book for my 4.5 year old daughter, and believe me, we are keeping this one out of the hands of her book-destroying 1.5 year old brother. What a magnificent book! Every page has a beautiful pop-up, and not only the page itself, but the accompanying text pages attached to each page. Such creativity and technological wonders. Seriously! My daughter saw this in the store while we were on vacation, and spent about 10 minutes on the plane, quietly spinning the wizard's balloon. If that isn't worth the price, then what is? 10 minutes of quiet on an airplane? The man in the seat next to us couldn't keep his eyes off it... even he was fascinated.

Newsweek just featured this book in their December 11, 2000 issue in their article about the best new kids' books (see p.72). They even show the Emerald City pop-up on their table of contents page.

I am sure that as long as we can protect this book from our precious little one-man-wrecking crew, it will be a treasured heirloom for many years-to-come. Would make a fabulous gift for the holidays.

"Cut From the Stars," This Book is Wonderful
I first learned about Alex Deford in the ABC made-for-tv movie, and was immediately touched. Having always been a fan of Frank Deford's sports writing, I knew this book could be nothing less than sensational. And I was correct.

Alex Deford was a strong little girl that was stricken with a terrible disease, and eventually taken from this earth way too early. In this book, Deford recalls her inspiring story, as well as giving us a look into his own life. He is straightforward and ultimately candid about the trials and pains that young Alex had to endure. Through her remarkable story, we learn a great deal about her, and it forces us to look upon each of our own inner strengths.

The book flows really well, and Deford does an incredible job of mingling his own story into Alex's. I really enjoyed the way he included other children's letters and personal thoughts, and not correcting their spelling was a great touch.

This book was a joy to read. I thank Mr. Deford for opening my eyes to this horrible disease, and just allowing me to get to know Alex Deford and what she was all about. It was a true pleasure, and I urge all of you to please read this wonderful book.

A very sad, but must read book.
Not only did "Alex the Life of a Child" tell the life story of a child with cystic fibrois it told of a child who lived her life with a positvie attuide even thogh she knew she could die anyday. I was in tears for most of the book, but have read in several times since. This book will teach you how to keep a more positive attuide by telling the courage Alex had up until the last day of her life. She died at a young age, but the inpact she had on others life will not soon be forgotten.

One of My Favorites!
I have never cried so hard at the end of a book! It is so touching, and heart wrenching at the same time!
Alex has cystic fibrosis, and began dying as soon as she was born. As a young child she would have to endure painful treatments to keep the fluids out of her lungs, yet she always kept a positive outlook on life. She wanted everyone to be happy, even though she was dying. Her compassion, wisdom, kindness, and optimism was attained at such a young age, it's amazing! No matter what happened she was always more concerned about the well being of others than the well being of herself. I hope all of you who read this will be as touched as I was!

Ben Gill, CEO (Chief Education Officer)
What a wonderful book. I feel like I've just completed a course in CEO management, but with no tests and plenty of laughs. If more CEO's as well as others in management heeded Ben's advise, the workers they supervise would probably be happier in their work. A must read for those who want to succeed in their career.

A must-read for business leaders!
Ben Gill's 'Random Thoughts' is a great gift to the business leader or manager. In this book, humor and hard-hitting insights are combined to create a memorable lesson in leadership.

I read the book cover-to-cover, then have been re-reading chapters ever since. One of my favorite things about the book is that each chapter is a stand-alone concept using a separate story to illustrate a point. Though there are themes that are present throughout the book, each chapter can be enjoyed on its own. This feature makes it a great candidate for one of the 4 or 5 books you should be reading at any given time according to Ben Gill. The only tough decision is do you keep it at your office or on your nightstand. Mine has been commuting with me for the last two weeks because I can't decide.

Ben Gill's messages about integrity and the importance of team commitment are high-impact for any business leader (or manager or employee who wants to become a leader). And his delivery style means the information really gets in and stays with you. It's like no other business book I've ever read. I mean, how often do you see books that are included in the categories 'business' AND 'humor'?

I work with business leaders every day, and I have purchased copies of 'Random Thoughts from a Wandering Mind' for every client (and several friends and family members) to share Ben Gill's gift with them. Don't miss out on this entertaining lesson on leadership!

Client Gifts
I read the review written by the CEO who gave this book to his top clients. Then I ordered the book and understood why. Any business person will receive great "take home" value from Gill's book. I have ordered copies for my top clients (about 100) and asked that Gill personalize them. To my surprise he agreeded. Now I see why he was able to grow a great company and I look forward to putting his lessons in practice in my company as well. This one is so filled with great, yet simple to implement, business ideas that it is hard to believe. My word to Gill - write another one fast!

A special remembrance
I was deeply moved and touched by this book. Miep Gies is perhaps the last person alive who knew the Frank family well during that pivotal time when the family were in hiding. As someone who has followed the Anne Frank story all my life it was something special to read this story about someone who could add more pieces to the puzzle of Anne's life.

Miep and her collaborator Alison Leslie Gold have done a wonderful job in bringing to life in clear crisp prose Miep's role in helping the family during that terrible time when barbarity had stood the world on its head. One point of interest is the inconsistency of Miep's report of events, with others, on that awful day of the family's arrest in August 1944. Chapter 15 of Miep's book should be read closely with the very precise account of that day contained in "The Diary of Anne Frank: the Critical Edition."

This is not to imply that Miep was in anyway involved in the betrayal of the family. Clearly, she wasn't. Miep's inconsistences just make her book more realistic, more readable, more earthy. Her book becomes an account not of a hero, a saint or a fighter for a cause. Miep was simply a friend who cared.

Such a strong woman...
Miep Gies should be remembered as one of the greatest women of all time. Out of sheer love, love for people, she helped in hiding the Frank family along with a few others.

The book tells the entire story of Miep Gies, from her first employment by Anne's father until the final liberation of Holland. The story is told honestly and without a feeling of ego or of her deliberately sounding like the brave woman she was. And it's told in such a way, that you feel a kind of suspense as if you didn't know of the tragedy coming.

Miep is unrelenting in her portrayal of the grimness of life during the German occupation of Holland. It was worse of all for the Jewish people, but it was also hard on the Dutch people. Reading this is an education for those of us who have no idea of how it is to live in an occupied country.

However, you feel the hope in the ending. Also, one realizes how truly important a book that Anne Frank's diary was. This is a very moving and a most important book on its own.

WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE IF WE WERE ALL LIKE MIEP?
Be prepared. This book will take your mind and body back to the war years. You will feel the suffering, not only of the Jews, but the Dutch people under German occupation.

It also serves as an independent witness to many of the events Anne described in her Diary. This was dramatized in a made for television movie about 10 years ago.

Miep and her husband Henk opened their home and hearts to Otto Frank for seven years after the war. They helped preserve his post-concentration camp sanity and gave him strength to live.

Had Miep read the Diary after Anne's capture, she states that she'd have had to burn it since it implicated people as hiders of Jews. Thankfully, Miep did not read it until years later. Even with Otto Frank's post-war encouragement, it was simply too painful for her to read. The miracle of the Diary's survival and gift to the world is due to Miep's remarkable courage and mysterious fate.

funny mixture of music and politics
Very funny book, frank gives his views on music, beer, rock journalism, televangelists, his own politics('practical conservatism'). You have the biographical stuff when he was a kid, which is very funny (especially the explosives stuff). You then get a history of the original mothers, the freak scene and that stuff. There's a hilarious chapter on frank's dirty lyrics (drool brittania) with some priceless quotes from a court case. Frank talks about his kids a bit, and what he likes to eat. There's some interesting stuff on music, orchestra problems, and music technology. Then Frank talks about more political stuff in the last third of the book. This is hit and miss, alot of this is stuff which was current at the time of writing but it hasn't aged well. (And it isn't that interesting in any case). The pmrc stuff is good, also the televangelism. Non zappa fans can read this and enjoy it, and fz fans definitely need to read this!! Thank you

very enlightening
i had to read "the real frank zappa book" for school, but it certainly wasnt an inconvience. i grew up on frank zappa, having a father as a zappa nut. so i had an inkling of an idea as to what he was all about. a great look into zappa's life, although my dad tells me there is some controversy as to what is true, even in an autobiography. i suppose it's hard to find a credible source on such a wild guy, eh? but anyhow...an extremely good book. quite a jolly laugh, too...

So you like to laugh, do you?
As the typical high school sophomore, I was not thrilled when my English teacher assigned us another boring reading assignment. This particular assignment was to read someone's autobiography/biography and write an essay on it. I consulted my older sister, and she recommended The Real Frank Zappa Book. I was skeptical at first. Who was Frank Zappa anyway? But as I read this excellent book, I discovered the real Frank Zappa. I realized that this individual did not get as much recognition as he should of, as a musician and as a human being. The Real Frank Zappa Book was also one of the funniest things I've read since Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies (which I highly recommend). Since reading the book, I have begun listening to his music more and am slowly being transformed into a die-hard Zappa fan. Frank Zappa was a truly unique individual. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the mood for a laugh.

Blueberries for Sal (Reading Chest)

Authors: Robert McCloskey and Frank Scardino

Average review score:

Wonderful story with both spunk and kindness
I loved this book as a child because I saw myself in Sal who was curious and spunky and had a serious independent streak. She was and is what is called a Tom Boy. And like Sal and her Mom, my Mom and Aunt Ann would take me with them to pick blueberries or what we call huckleberries here in the west coast, and on the hillsides of Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier, Mt Shasta etc.

Knowing that we saw black bears and always had to be prepared if cubs were around, made this story "real" to me. And I love stories where the girl isn't a whimp, but is allowed to be herself and is shown doing both normal activities but activities that show a more rural or self sufficent idea.

I also like the story because it is a great Mother and daughter tale and shows that even the human animal like the bear and her cub, have such caring personalities. Oh and I also indetified with the eat more berries than you pick theme.

Unless someone has tasted a sweet freshly picked blueberry or strawberry etc they have no idea how wonderful the taste and smell is and that you really cannot stop at just one. I wonder how many parents who have taken the kids along to pick berries have done so knowing that the kid will probably not produce much fruit for canning or baking, and may even come home with a tummy ache. But that it is a great outing and make for great memories.

Timeless and classic book, perfect for family bonding
Blueberries for Sal is a favorite book from childhood and is still one of my favorite books to this very day. This book is about a young girl who finds herself caught in a wild adventure while she is picking blueberries with her mother. It is a perfect book to sit down and read together as a family, and is a story both children and parents can relate to. I will never forget listening to my mother read, eating blueberries, and singing kurplink, kurplank, kurplunk.

A classic.
This is a story of a young girl picking blueberries with her mother and a young bear picking blueberries with its mother. As they amble along picking berries and eating them, the bear gets seperated from its mother as does Sal get seperated from her mother. The story is gentle from beginning to end. It brings back many memories of picking blueberries and eating them faster than you can pick them. This is a classic that I grew up with and my children are growing up with now. The pictures only enhance the text and are very gentle and sweet. The theme of the story is very nice and reassuring to young children. Well worth the time and money to buy this book.

Enjoy.

Best Gambling Book Ever Written
In my opinion this book is the one indispensable book to read before you go to a casino. I read it before I go to the casinos because it gets me thinking in the right way. Scoblete is a dynamic writer and probably the best gambling writer of all time. This book covers all the games and has some of the best strategies I have ever encountered. What really makes the book special arehis stories. I loved his last chapter "A Day In The Life of a Guerrilla Gambler" where he recounts his adventures on a single day in Las Vegas. You must get this book if you want to be prepared to take on the casinos.

Well Written and Researched and Fun
This is the third book by Frank Scoblete that I have recently read. The book covers just about every game the casino offers with a few exceptions such as Spanish 21. The strategies are well thought out and based on solid mathematical principles. However, it is obvious that Scoblete has a wealth of hands-on experience as the book is loaded with his personal anecdotes and observations, often very funny and always very insightful. I do think that if you could only buy one gambling book, this would be it. The writing is so far superior to anything I've read by other authors in this field that it's like night and day. If you are a gambler looking to refine your game and also looking for a fun read, I think this book will do it for you. His section on a day in the life of a guerrilla gambler is one of the best diary type chapters I have ever read, it was exciting and gripping.

Guerrilla Gambling
This is without a doubt the best, most comprehesive book on general gambling techniques for all of the major casino games. Frank Scoblete truly knows what he writes about, he gives the reader more than just a generic basic strategy to follow. He truly knows how to play and win in the casino. He also knows how to explain every major casino game so that even a beginner can go to the casino with a true feeling of confidence. The author has also written other more in depth books that focus in on specific games. All of is books are written in an easy reader fiendly style. I especially liked the chapter in Guerrilla Gambling about a day in the life of the guerilla gambler. It is a true account of what happend to him on a typical day in Las Vegas. It is written in a diary like fasion and shows the ups and downs of a typical day at the casinos and teaches the hit and run method that can make you a successsful gambler. This is without a doubt, a must read for player of all skill levels, it not only teaches the basics but also teaches a few tricks of the trade that are invaluable in the casino. Don't go to Las Vegas without reading this book, its worth its weight in gold, and if a particular game interests you find one of his other books that focusses entirely on that game. It is an investment that only a fool would pass up. Frank Scoblete is truly the best gaming author that I have ever come across.

The best Study Bible
I love the New King James Version, put out by Thomas Nelson, but I loath Thomas Nelson Bibles. This is how I happened upon the Thompson a few years ago as I was relieved to find a NKJV not made by T.N. I first bought an NKJV in bonded leather. After 2 years of very heavy use, I bought an NKJV in genuine leather, and later a handy size KJV in genuine. All three of these Bibles are wonderful in every way.

The Thompson Study system is very helpful and they've graciously spared us from a myriad of religious cliche and personal opinion. The page layout is smart. The Bible text actually fills the page and all study helps and references are relegated to the side margins. There are so many ways to use the studies and references, I am unable to number them here. The concordance is as extensive as any I've seen. The 14 maps are colorful and very well done. Simply put, it's a complete, Jesus-exalting study Bible designed with excellence.

The construction of these Bibles is equally impressive. The paper is just right--not too thick, not too thin. The print is dark and sharp. Their font is subtil and very appropriate for the Bible, if you ask me. The red words of Jesus are RED. They're not muddy brown; they're not pink; they're bright, deep, beautiful red. They are printed consistantly page to page, not some pages lighter or misprinted, as the Thomas Nelson folks are plagued by.

Now that I own three Thompsons, I feel about them the way a good ol' boy down in the South feels about shotguns. "I have more than I need, but not as many as I want!"

The Single Best Study Bible
I use the Thompson NASB and it is great. I will just echo other sentiments that the layout of this Bible is great. This Bibles greatest strength is that it uses Scripture to teach Scripture. There are no notes on the page. If one wants to dig into a specific passage or specific book the references will take the student into the Bible as deep and as far as they want to go. This is my main Bible, along with the Dickson New Analytical KJV, to read and study God's words. There are too many specialty and study Bibles on the market. All the major publishers bring them out each year like boxed cereal. I too own and use some specialty study Bibles for specific purposes. These are great if you want to study from a specific point of view, like Dispensational or Charismatic, or understand what an interesting teacher of the Word may have to say like Tim LaHaye, John MacArthur, RC Sproul, or Henry Blackaby. But on a daily basis the Thompson Chain Reference is the one that can bring the best out of the student of the Word.

The last word on any subject is the Word of God.
In either the King James or New American Standard version, the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is an excellent study tool composed of a wide variety of references and cross-references constructed in such a manner as to facilitate and enhance the experience of those who seek a deeper and richer understanding of God's Word. As Christians, it is our duty to ever search the Scriptures in order that we may know and fully understand His truths.

It is reported that Dr. Thompson and his wife spent 40 years developing this exceptional work. I can but state that their efforts have born fruit in the realization of a virtual Biblical library housed in a single volume.

"Linked together by the unique Thompson numerical reference system are 7,000 names, places, and topics in more than 100,000 references-each carefully analyzed and classified by subject, topic, or theme."

A Valuable addition to our knowledge of Anne Frank
Melissa Mueller states at the beginning of this book that she does not intend for this volume to be a replacement for the diary, but rather an adjunct to it. This goal has been acheived admirably through extensive interviews and research, giving insights in not only Anne's life before and after her experiences in hiding, but also shedding light on the various family members and people involved.

One thing Mueller accomplishes, which may well be worth the price of the book alone, is to paint a more accurate picture of two of the most maligned figures in Anne's diary: Edith Frank and Fritz Pfeffer (Albert Dussel in Anne's pseudonym). Especially moving are descriptions of Edith's tenacity in keeping her daughters with her at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and a letter written by Pfeffer to his fiancee, Charlotte. One would wish Mueller had been able to do the same for the van Pels family (the van Daans in the diary), but perhaps the information available was simply too scant.

For anyone who cherishes the diary and legacy of Anne Frank, this book will be a welcome addition to the body of work this remarkable child has inspired.

A Real Page Turner
Everyone is familiar with the name Anne Frank, and everyone is aware of the struggles she and her family went through in the secret annex, but what do we know about the parts of her life that aren't contained in her diary? This book reveals portions of the lives of Anne Frank and her family that you never knew existed. It will take you from a time when the Franks were accepted as part of a community, to a time when they were no longer allowed to belong to that community. This book will help you gain a better understanding of the era in which Anne Frank lived. Muller does a great job at providing small details which really make the legend come to life. She has obtained information from multiple sources, which give different information and viewpoints. There is even a letter written by Miep Gies, who is responsible for hiding the Frank family. In this note, she expresses many emotions and a unique viewpoint which will make you question your own feelings on the Holocaust. This biography is very emotional and insightful. It contains answers to many questions you may have, and makes it easier than ever to understand what happened to the Franks and other families during the holocaust.

A very emotional journey through Anne's life
I read about Anne Frank when I was around 8 years old. I was very touched by her story, and begged my aunt - who lives in Amsterdam - to take me to the Anne Frank House to visit the Secret Annex. Ever since, Anne's tragic story has been with me. I read her diary, as well as other books written with her. Now I read this book - Anne's biography. I just finished it - and I sit here with a pale face and tears in my eyes. It's a very touching story with happy times and dark times, and a very tragic end. The author describes this end in every detail you could possibly think of... the arrestation of the eight people in the Annex, Mieps attempts to free the family by offering money to Gestapo police offers, the family's deportation to the camps... how Anne lived in happiness in Westerbork after having been locked in the Annex for two years. How she was deported to Auschwitz - where she was separated from her father and, later on, from her mother. How she and Margot were deported to Bergen-Belsen, where she died so tragically. If this part of the book doesn't move you to burst out in tears, the part when Otto finds out his daughters won't come back, will. This book is a journey through Anne's life and after the last page the terrible truth gets you by the throat: this young girl, who described this terrible period in her life so lively, will never ever come back. Anne's spirit is with us forever. Whenever I'm in Amsterdam, I always stop by Prinsengracht 263 to visit the Annex. And when I'm standing in Anne's room I still feel the same as when I was 8 years old, and visited her room for the first time.
