The Dashing Austrian Captain & the Lovely Senorita Clara
For its type, this one is a classic. The author's father, also Frank, is the main protagonist. As a smitten young Austrian educated in Berlin of the late 19th Century, Frank falls in love with a faithfully married woman whom he impregnates because of her husband's infertility. Then, seeing no alternative, he enters a Roman Catholic monastary to become a priest and is promptly thrown out and cursed for disobeying orders when he takes Church property to feed the poor. He becomes an artillery officer in the Austrian Army, receiving the Iron Cross for bravery, and subsequent honors to include a position, at age 22, as military liason on behalf of Austria to the Belgium government. From this point, our hero joins the multitude of those seeking fortune and honor in the new world, embarking as a ship's electrician on a German registry vessel from Bremerhave to Alcapulco, where he almost immediately survives yet another attempt on his life, killing a Mexican desperado in a bar fight. This is the setting for "Drums In The Hills," the ancient communication medium of that day in Old Mexico, a time of elegant chivilry of the landed European aristocracy and repressive rule over their indentured serfs, banditry, wild lawlessness and disorder, little regard for human life, Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution of 1910, ... and Frank is centrally located in the epicenter of it all. Before the first World War, Frank rides a German submarine from Mexico to attend German military intelligence school in Berlin! This is an important story on so many levels, religious, historical, military, hazards of the day, courtship in Old Mexico, bullfighting (yes, Frank is even gored and survives), and Native American order and justice in the seized lands. The only real suggestion I have for the author is to use a spelling and grammar checking program on the next edition.

Drums in the Hills
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I is a wonderful story that both entertained me and taught me a great deal about Mexico before and during the revolution. I was amused at how Frank entered the bull ring to impress his love, and amazed that he survived a firing squad of determined professional soldiers. It is a story that should be made into a movie! It would be very exciting and involve many colorful character actors. It has plenty of action, enough information for the intellectual and romance for the heart. It is easy to read and has convenient chapters. I fully recommend this book for any one to read!

Drums in the Hills
This book is a wonderfully informative and historical book that blends in romance, humor, excitement and tragedy amid the road to the Mexican revolution. The chapters are short, bitesize installments that lend themselves well to reading sessions. The vocabulary is simple enough to read without a dictionary and there is a great deal of dialogue which enlivens the characters' personalities. The auxillary characters are richly developed and I came away with a much greater understanding on what went on during this fascinating period of history.

Best Zappa Title
Since the 1960's I have enjoyed listening to the work of Frank Zappa. In my more recent years, I have enjoyed reading about his work and life. The books I have read include:

THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhioigrosso

ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE: THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF FRANK ZAPPA by Neil Slaven

NECESSITY IS... THE EARLY YEARS OF FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION by Billy James

COSMIK DEBRIS: THE COLLECTIVE HISTORY AND IMPROVISATIONS OF FRANK ZAPPA by Greg Russo

NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL: THE SAGA OF FRANK ZAPPA by David Walley THEM OR US by Frank Zappa

UNDER THE SAME MOON by Suzannah Thana Harris

BEING FRANK: MY TIME WITH FRANK ZAPPA by Nigery Lennon

With no doubt in my mind, ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE is most creative title among the Zappa biographies. Clearly this title accurately reduces Zappa's musical contribution to the fewest read possible words. Thus, the title is a masterpiece of composition and creativity.

In many ways, the book's content is similar to THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK. However, Slaven doesn't offer that whimsical and playful flavor that is found in Zappa's and Occhioigrosso's words. Slaven lays out the facts in a well-written and humanistic manner. Of books in my Zappa library, Slaven offers the most even-handed approach. I didn't find this even-handed approach in any of the other Zappa books I have read. However, being even-handed can lead to some dry reading, but nonetheless still worthy for those interested in Zappa's life.

One significant reaction emerges in my head. I hope young musicians read ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE. Zappa made some critical errors of judgement early in his career that effected his entire life. The evil characters - in this and other Zappa biographies - are record company executives. In his naiveté, Zappa was too trusting or too hungry to make rational decisions prior to signing a record deal. If young musicians carefully read ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE (and COSMIK DEBRIS by Greg Russo), they can avoid making the mistakes that plagued Zappa and the Turtles.

The ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE will be enjoyed by all Zappa fans. In addition, I think it should be required reading for all musicians who intend to record.

Cited in "The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play"
... I decided to track this one down in the the public library to no avail. So buy it I must. additional note: "The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play" is a definitive critical and interpretive discourse covering the entire length of Zappa's career and even has a closing section in which Zappa participates in a reading and critique of the manuscript before its actual publishing. Written by Ben(Out To Lunch)Watson, it is objectively projected to an apostrophic nth degree.

well researched biog,more impartial than e.g.michael gray's
I found this book provided more detail on zappa's early years, and also gave a truer account of what contemporaries thought of zappa (i.e a bit of an intellectual).Neal Slaven has taken full advantage of being able to examine the whole of zappa's life and work;unlike previous biographies which had to make assessments with new works still appearing. In summing up more critical than some previous books yet still appreciative.

Excellent read
One does not have to be familiar with the Adirondacks to feel what life might be like there. This book will transport you to these forests, to another dimension, to another world, to a land of mystery and action.

If you want to know if elves exist, what they do, how they think, how they interact with people, you will discover these answers as you encounter The Elves of Loch Fada.

This book was written for youong people, and I am not in that age group, but this adventure took my imigination and mind there again. Even after finishing the book, my mind will sometimes wander back to that wonderful fantasy world.

Though I am an avid reader of suspense, I am glad that this book caught my attention. An excellent read for young readers and for the young at heart. Yes, I will read the sequel.

A wonderful tale for all ages
This book is a transcension of native folk lore of the Adirondak Mountains, with classic well developed fantasy. Perfectly written for all ages, it will keep hardcore fantasy fans tunring page after page, while also riviting those with a local knowledge of the region. There is truly something for everyone here. I recommend it to anyone who is a fantasy fan, a reader of lore, or has ties to the Adirondak mountains.

A wonderful tale for all ages
This book is simply an amazing mix of ancient folklore, modern locale and flavors, and a deep fantasy mix that any avid fantasy fan will immediately identify to. Young and old will find elements to keep the mind flying along on this trip to another place. This novel will strike Adirondak buffs with locations they recognize and have seen, giving them new insight into these places, a perspective only given in local lore long since past. Fantasy fans will find the novel to contain all they are used to, but presented in a way which brings new twists to ancient epic battles of good versus evil.
I highly recommend this book to any and all readers with an Adirondak backround, an interest in ancient lore, and all fantasy fans of any age. Well Done.

Best around I have seen. We have added to our science museum
We have added a copy of this to our science museum library. If you had to pick just one book to figure things out with and you cuold take only one book to a mythical desert island.... this would have to be it for general medicine!

Lisa Surgical/Trauma RN
I wish I would have had this book when I was going to school. This book not only defines virtually every medical term but elaborates on essential areas. The beginning of the book is a color atlas of all body systems. eg. Skeletal,GI, Cranial Nerves, Muscles ect. It is then organized as a Dictionary from A-Z. There are clear pictures to help elaborate on definitions and explanations. An example is in the area of Intercranial Pressure. Not only is it defined, it is also explained in detail including ICP monitoring devices and pictures for easy understanding. I have been a nurse for a long time and found this book to be a wonderful reference.... in all areas of nursing.... Everyone on the unit wants to borrow this book and many have already purchased it themselves.

Quality nursing dictionaries
Having used many nursing dictionaries, this one is by far the best. It is very clear and amazingly comprehensive. At the front there is a short anatomy guide followed by a colour atlas. The bulk of the text is fantastic; good diagrams and flow charts throughout reinforce learning and an invaluble pronunciation guide for those of us that haven't studied Latin. To complete, a large Appendix section is included which provides a wealth of useful information for the reader. Although US and Canada focused, this book is a must for any nurse, doctor or allied health worker. At this price, buy it.

Mediterranean Look in the 70's!
These photographs were taken by Frank DiLeo between 1970 & 1980, and as stated in the book, there's a cultural-historical feel to these dated images. They remind me of Von Gloeden, but in black & white. These young long haired well-endowed, dark, Mediterranean type models he photographed are beautiful to look at. They seem very happy posing for the camera, and most are smiling. I think photographs from this period show much more sexual attitude & emotion than current photographer's works. Or maybe it's just that we have been more over-exposed over the last two decades to so many male nude photography books they have lost their spark of originality and excitement.

I like Frank's photography images & enjoyed this collection. My only complaint again, as in other Euros Series books, is that there is no real biography of this photographer, just a few words about his style. We're left with a lot of questions about him & his life's work. Recommended.

NOTES FOR THE COLLECTOR OF MALE EROTICA
Another excellent photobook in the Euros series. Black and white photography of young men taken during the period of 1970-1980 in both Sicily and Puerto Rico, wonderful photos of real people instead of self-conscious models. The end notes by Don H. Mader help to put the photos in perspective and will give you a deeper appreciation of them. Nothing hardcore here, just superb photography. If you are a serious collector of male photography and feel like your drowning in a sea of the pornographic and the pretentious, DiLeo is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

Summary
Mediterranean and Latino young men aboud in this collection of plates actually taken in the '70s and '80s but seen here for the first time.

It tells how sharks breed their babys, where all the shark attacks were, The Grate White Shark, The gentel Giants like the Whale Shark and much, much more!!! It told me great facts, like the Megamouth shark is the rarest shark and was discovered in 1976, Sharks are made out of cartilege, The whale shark is the biggest fish in the world and only eats shrimp, Bull Sharks can swim down Rivers, Black Tip Reef sharks are very swift, shark's food can stay in the shark's stomach for more then 2 weeks and most importantley of all, SHARKS ARE GOOD NOT BAD AND DON'T LISTEN TO JAWS! It tells EVERYTHING you want to know about sharks! You should buy this book!

Very informative text supported by exciting photographs.
We purchased this book for our three year old who is in a shark phase, thanks to Microsoft's Dangerous Creatures CD-Rom, and he loves it. While the text is over his head, the photos are right on his level. He will enjoy the photos now and the text in a couple years. This is an excellent book for those, both young and old, who have an interest in sharks.

WOW
If you are a ship expert, or just want to find a little information, this is for you. Braynard and Miller did a spectacular job! They wrote enough info. so you know and understand each ship, but aren't so detailed that the book bores the reader. This book is a must have for anyone interested in ocean liners.

Outstanding!
This is the book to get if you're into ocean liners! It contains loads of great information about the ocean liners of the past and present, and whets the appetite for more!

One of the best rescources of passenger liners
I think the "Fifty Famous Liners" series (books 1-3) are the most concise and informational descriptions of the worlds most famous liners a terrific buy for Liner enthusiasts! Andrew Oliva (aoliva@odin.cbu.edu)

Excellent History of Roller Derby
This book is a must have if you were a fan of the IRDL's Roller Derby. The behind the scenes history of the sport and its skaters is excellent reading. It's too good to be out of print. Someone should reprint this book so that all Roller Derby fans can have their own copy.

Derby the way it was.
If you were a fan of the original Roller Derby--and not Roller Games, or what it turned into--this is the book to find. If you can buy a copy, do so. Tells the whole story til about 1970. O'Connell, Joanie, Calvello, Ronnie Robinson, Jerry Seltzer--the whole gang's here at their zenith.

Wonderful Work!
Lois Ellen Frank conveys great passion for Native American culture in this book. An obviously well deserved win of the James Beard award. A wonderfuly delicious, colorful and informative writing on American Indian Foods!

An outstanding book
This is a great book for reading about the history of the many foods mentioned. The cover the book is actually different from the one shown on Amazon.com (and even more beautiful). If you are thinking about visiting anywhere in the Southwestern United States, this book will tell you something about the delicious foods native to the area. The photographs are outstanding and well worth the cost of the book. You don't have to be a cook to enjoy the foods and stories portrayed here.

Photographs make you hungry and recepies good enough to eat!
It is easy to cook from these recepies and they work! I can't put this book down; it is so gloriously photographed and with such artistry and respect for Native American culture. Even those with no interest in food, will relish the photographs. The food is modern and healthful and edible.

A fine compliment to Volume 1
What you get here is basically a continuation of the beautiful works from his first volume. In short, if you loved the first volume, you'll love this one too.

Superb,out of this World Collection
When I was younger I found this collection, hidden in the back of a small store. I saw the Art and immediately fell in love.Unfortunately I lent the collection and never saw it again. Im very happy to have found it again. It will never leave my site again!

This is one of the most amazing art books I have ever seen.
This book is cover to cover magic. These tastefully idealized, and superbly rendered fantasy scenes will astound and thrill you. Frank Frazetta masterfully portrays warriors, maidens and monsters in "larger than life" scenes depicting the peak moment of action. For the artist, art enthusiast, or even book collector, The Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta book volumes 1-5 are definitely worth adding to your collection."5 stars" is an understatement.
