A visually stunning tribute to some of Wright's best work
"Frank Lloyd Wright's California Houses," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" by the author, each of which focuses on a particular facet of this great architect's work. This volume focuses on a remarkable group of homes designed by Wright between 1917 and 1927.

Like other volumes in this series, this book combines a brief but informative text with a wealth of full-color photos. Lind also includes a bibliography, a chronology, black-and-white historical photos, and sidebar quotes from various sources.

The photos of the California houses capture many interior and exterior details. These marvelous homes reflect the spirit of the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mexico and Central America; in fact, they look like modern versions of ancient Mayan temples. It is amazing to look at the patterned concrete blocks, the innovative use of glass, and the other distinctive features of these homes.

Wright's California homes are majestic, yet inviting buildings that have a timeless beauty and grace to them. This little book is a wonderful tribute to these great homes.

Concrete, Organic Architecture, and Kinship with the Terrain
The book is so specific that just by reading it you could build the exact same house on your own in no time! Extensive info on all the residences including furniture set-ups. Lots and lots of quotes from the master himself. Descriptives will take you on a virtual reality tour.

"...the ecstasy of power in ordering space..."
This book is an excellent study, in marvelous detail
and analysis, of one of Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpieces
of architecture. Too often the words "artist" and
"genius" only dimly suggest the true nature of the
person or work being discussed; but this book with
its keen and accurate delineations about Robie,
the client and his desires, Wright, the architect/
artist/genius and his desires, and the work of art
itself -- the Robie House -- help one to fully
understand the harmonious combination of elements
which can come together in producing a masterpiece.
The author of this work is Donald Hoffmann, and
he has himself produced a work of magnificence
in this full presentation of the design and execution
of a "dream house." Hoffmann gives full and interesting
accounts of Robie and of Wright as their two psyches
come together to promote an "idealized" artwork which
pleases both client and architect.
The book also has wonderful footnotes filled
with insightful comments and quotes. Here is
an example of one:

Louis H. Sullivan at the end of his life wrote
quite beautifully that Wright was gifted with
"an apprehension of the material,so delicate as
to border on the mystic, and yet remain coordinate
with those facts we call real life." (p. 31)

The text itself is filled with suggestive and
provocative commentary:

Wright's ideal was the comprehensive and unified
work of art, the *Gesamtkunstwerk. German culture
fascinated him. He spoke of Bach and Beethoven
as the two greatest architects, and he confessed
his love for the old Germany of Goethe, Schiller,
even Nietzsche. (p. 14)

Wright stood almost alone in his intuition of
the prairie. * * * Everything about the site
suggested a long, low, stream-lined, ship-like
house: the prairie, the nearby lake, the new
sense of speed, * * * and the shape of the lot ,
three times as long as it was wide. (p. 17)

Radical and masculine, the Robie house would be
built in a part of Chicago characteristically
stern and urbane. (p. 13)
-------------
The book is filled with "160 carefully selected
illustrations" --which include architectural
drawings and many photos, both of the house,
of Robie and his family, of Wright, and of some
of Wright's other previous houses leading up to
the Robie House. Hoffmann also did excellent
research by gaining access to complete
taped transcripts by Robie, and interviews with
Robie's son, and others.

There is something very compelling and involving
to my sense perceptions about Wright's long, sleek,
tiered approach to architecture, as well as the
various designs of lamps and chairs and lights
which he included in the house. But on seeing the
photos of the dining room...and the rigid but
beautiful "Gothic" like chairs, as well as the
photos of the "stuff" that the Robie family
cluttered the Spartan rooms with in their
attempts to "customize" it to their living
desires...the house seems incredibly beautiful,
but not incredibly utilitarian: idealized, abstract,
geometric beauty and organic harmony with the
beauty and structure of Nature, but not necessarily
"organic" in its relation to people and "common
creature" comforts.

Batter my heart, Frank Lloyd Wright
Dieses Buch, wie sein Thema, wird wie ein Ziegelsteinouthouse aufgebaut. Unassailable Forschung. Gute Arbeit, Don.

Some surprises await the reader
This book is an interesting juxtaposition of two things--Frank Lloyd Wright's complex dealings with a maverick, and some very rare, beautiful photos.

The first part of this is probably of interest to only Frank Lloyd Wright's fans. But those photographs are something else.

Most people know only the exterior of Hollyhock House--cold, forbidding, monolithic; but are unfamiliar with its breathtakingly beautiful interior--in this book, displayed with some photos in vivid color. In my opinion, the interior of this building is the most beautiful of all Frank Lloyd Wright houses; a masterpiece of interior design in the Prairie Style. As an added bonus, there are some extremely rare photos of Residence B--long-demolished, it was a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, probably unique in its use of mitred wood and corbeled posts. (I've never seen a house like it in my entire life).

The photos make this book a must-read, must-have part of your collection, suitable for display on a coffee table.

The best book on Hollyhock House
As the author of this book, I know that I have brought together a collection of drawings, archival photos, plans and drawings made especially for this publication that document and analyze one of Wright's largest and most famous commissions during the period of the 1920s. His work with Aline Barnsdall was extrememly complicated and covered over a decade in his career. My book puts the Hollyhock House in context of the larger commission for Olive Hill. Drawings are reproduced from several sources, mainly the Wright Archives. Hundreds of letters and documents were consulted. A section of color photographs shows the house in detail with fully furnished interior views. This book is a must for the library of every reader interested in Wright. I hope you enjoy it and value it too.

Family Interest and Research
My family has a copy of 'Frank Matsura Frontier Photographer' because my grandmother moved to Conconully in 1902 with her family and then married in 1905 and remained there for some time. My mother was born there. Possibly some of the old photos of my grandmother and grandfather in their courting days were taken by Matsura - but at the very least they knew him. I also found several of Matsura's postcards in my grandmother's belongings when she died. The book is marvelous and I have shared it with my family; and have been curious to know whether it is still available in case we want another copy.

Review by author.
Frank (Sakae) Matsura was the direct descendant of Emperor Saga of Japan, through the lords Matsura of Kyushu, Hirado Island actually. His illustrious past was not discovered until after the publication of the book. I simply was curious about unanswered questions and kept digging. In 1983, the publisher sold the movie rights to a Tokyo production company working for network TV Asahi. The resultant two-hour "made for TV" docu-drama starred a famous Japanese actor, Morio Kazama, and was aired in Japan in 1984. Heibonsha Publishers released a Japanese language edition in 1983, with an updated text, long out of print. In addition, a different publisher bought the rights to exhibit thirty of Matsura's prints from this book for one year throughout Japan. The book won the following awards, among others: Governor's award (Washington), Pacific NW Booksellers' Award, a Merit Award from Photographic Society of New York, National Fed. of Press Women Award. It received reviews in about 100 newspapers and magazines, including a several page review in Popular Photography. The unfolding of Matsura's story has been a thrilling saga for me. It paralleled the period when Japan was emerging from its self-imposed curtain and entering the Meiji Restoration period. Matsura's father and uncle were not only of the lordly family but were special samurai loyal to the Shogun. After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, they were "out of a job," and turned unsuccessfully to being tea merchants. Matsura's parents both died, leaving him an orphan to live with his uncle. For years he lived and worked at the Shoei Gakuen in Tokyo, still a prestigious school, founded by his uncle and aunt. He learned English there. He was baptized in the Takanawa Presbyterian Church of Meguro-ku, Tokyo,(still operates) founded by a relative, and baptized by Kumaji Kimura, founder of the YMCA in Japan. Why Matsura suddenly left for the USA is yet unclear, despite exhaustive research, but possibly he discovered he had TB and did not want to spread it to the school children. Nonetheless, his photography, inspired by still another Japanese great, is a major legacy. The book lives on. It was partly the reason for the awarding to me of the first President's Award of the Japan-America Society, because the book garnered immense good will, as well as renown. My agent is investigating the reprinting of one or both books (USA and Japan). The story has been a lasting satisfaction for me personally to introduce. By the way, I have not erred in spelling his name. The heads of family have translated to one "u"--Matsura. Others are two "u"s or Matsuura..people frequently ask me about this matter. I am in touch with his family (discovered through my research) and have been made an honorary Matsura.

Great Inside View of the #1 Megastar of them all!!
From Bobby Sox fave to Sultan of Swoon to the Fall and Great Comeback, it is just about all here, except for the very last years from the mid-1990's to the end. This volume is a collection of essays surveying the vast realm of an incredible career. The clear links between his peerless Capitol recordings, and his own life are explained,as are the demanding sessions themselves, his always being in charge with a lot of help from his friends. Every piece here is worthwhile, my favorite being Gay Talese's FRANK SINATRA HAS A COLD (1966)To quote:"Sinatra with a cold is Picasso without paint,Ferrari without fuel..A Sinatra with a cold can, in a small way, send vibrations through the entertainment industry and beyond as surely as a President can, suddenly sick, shake the national economy." A great fun of a read! Not for Frank fanatics only.

A must for anyone who loves Ole Blue Eyes
This book is like an almanac of information on Frankie. I had the pleasure of reading it at a friends house, and it was just great. I highly recommend it. Another good one, is "Why Sinatra Matters." Both give a glimpse into a man that we all love.

Frank's Whales

Author: Frank Gromling
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

I'll bet you didn' know much about the Right Whale
A lot of people retire and lie in the sun. Not Frank Gromling. He rediscovered the Atlantic Ocean and discovered the Right Whale. Probably most don't realize that this species of whale migrates down the coast of the United States as far as Florida, then returns north in the summer. Thus the name and the book, "Frank's Whales." This delightful novelette recounts his adventures as he contributed his time as a volunteer assisting in the task of helping the specie survive. Ironically, being named the "Right" Whale was wrong for the species and they were hunted almost to extinction. "Frank's Whales," is loaded with facts concerning the history of the Right Whale. It gives detailed information about the specie itself and how humans can work to guarantee its survival. This is a little book that should be in every library.

H. Steven Robertson
Educator and Author of "Ranch Boy" and "Acorns of Love and Wisdom."

Survival of one species dependent on humans
It's a scenario that's been replayed throughout history.

The numbers of a species approach the edge of extinction. Just as with Loggerhead Sea Turtles, American Bald Eagles, and Peregrine Falcons, the Right Whale has a better chance of survival because individuals not only cared about its well-being, but took action to assist.

Few people may know, until Frank's Whales lands in their lap, that Northeast Florida is a critical birthing ground for the Right Whale, the rarest large whale in the Atlantic Ocean. Frank Gromling's book explores this majestic creature's natural history and the protection programs that hope to safeguard this whale's numbers, beginning with the whalers who, in prior centuries, reduced populations to a critical level, and moving forward to modern times, when ship strikes pose a serious threat.

The author relates his own experiences as part of a volunteer group that records observations and data to assist government agencies in formulating plans for the Right Whale's protection.

This book is perfect for many purposes. For the environmentally conscious, it's a lovely example of those who do more than protest: they give their time to help on behalf of a cause they hold dear.

For any student doing a life sciences report or project, this book will also be an invaluable resource, because it offers original research from first hand accounts, something not readily available for many projects.

The book is also interesting to a casual reader, because Frank Gromling tells a good story in an unpretentious, direct manner that puts the reader on the observation deck with him.

A bonus in this book involves exceptional black and white photographs of these whales and other ocean species, and related charts and maps.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader.

Six or Seven stars, cannot be recommended too highly
I wrote this plug for the reading recommendations in Barbara Conable's "How to Learn the Alexander Technique." My recommendation still holds.

To date, the richest and most informative book on the Technique. Jones reviews the history of the Technique, summarizes Alexander's books, gives an account of his own experiences as student, trainee and teacher, and gives a short presentation of the contents of his 31 published experimental papers. Some beginners may find this book a little rich for their blood, but this is the one to take to that desert island; the superb bibliography alone is worth the price of the book. Required reading for serious students and teachers.

One of the best AlexTech books around
One the best books on the Alexander Technique, including a good biography of FM Alexander. Also read Body Learning by Michael Gelb.
