Nash Rambler (Five Star First Edition Mystery Series)

Author: Frank Sennett

for fans of Get Shorty
Northwestern University journalist major Nashua Hansen obtains an internship at the San Bernardino Ledger. At the beginning of his drive west at the Evanston on ramp, he provides a ride to biker Homer, whose bike went up in flames. In San Bernardino, Nash meets waitress Wendy at a Denny's. They go to a drive in movie where Nash happens upon his first story, a bear trap near the concession stand ripping into the foot of a teenage patron.

Nash sells a follow-up on the posh new drive-in theatres, but angers his editor Lydia Sorenson when he does. Nash visits the Star Time Theater when the manager Mr. Snipes assaults him breaking his wrist. Later, he interviews business mogul Evan Carr, who owns these drive-ins. As he digs deeper, Nash finds himself in trouble with his boss, the police, and a survivalist cult that reaches into the highest levels of the state government all who want him silent and residing in Illinois.

NASH, RAMBLER is an exciting investigative tale that reads somewhat like an amateur sleuth story because the hero is a rookie still learning his trade outside the classroom. The story line emphasizes the craziness of Southern California through the myopic eyes of a beleaguered Midwesterner. Elmore Leonard fans need to make room for another wacky book similar in many ways to Get Shorty.

Great book!
Fantastic book which includes beautiful photos of what the dishes should look like -- a must for cooks new to this genre of ethnic cooking. A lot of the recipes were similar to South American and Hispanic dishes, so it wasn't as "different" or difficult as I might have thought. All of the recipes were easy to follow -- and my guests just loved them. I highly recommend getting this book!

Native American Cooking with respect, history & flavor!
I was hunting for a recipe of Indian Frybread because we'd eaten it up at the Makah Nation's summer celebration & wanted some at home. I found Native American Cooking: Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations & gave my Southwest-raised Webmaster a palatable surprise.

I also tried Pozole because hominy has such a primal aroma & flavor - incredible & so simple! We do not, of course, eat anywhere near as elegantly as the photos which present Cornsicles, Arrowheads of Blue Cornmeal Gnocchi or Lamb Stuffed Chiles or Cactus Pad Salad with Fiery Jalapeno Dressing. However, Hohoise Ice or Prickly Pear Ice refresh us up here in our plain bowls just as well!

The Adobe Bread was heavenly, the Dandelion Salad with Mustard Greens Vinaigrette was energizing & the Picuris Indian Bread Pudding with Apricot Sauce - dreamy! What I liked the most was bringing home the sights, smells, tastes & textures of a sunburned country & its people - both in the ingredients I hunted up & Lois Ellen Frank's book.

For a taste of the American Southwest & a glimpse into what has sustained healthy & contented generations, I heartily recommend this one - the recipes work & can easily be adapted to wherever you happen to have settled.

Native American Scientists
This small book is an excellent resource for the classroom! It is written in simple language that children can understand.

Native American Scientists helps to fill the cultural void in most curriculums and provides us with a friendly, easy to understand description of the childhood and careers of five American Indian scientists. The colorful pictures of these scientists, their Native homelands and work environments lend interest to the reading.

Natural House

Amazon base price: $12.00

Relavent classic
Written in 1954, this short book is somewhat dated but Wright's words and thoughts are universal enough to be meaningful today. Wright's view of "The Natural House" adds cultural understanding to how we build and describes an idealistic precursor to contemporary "eco-building." Required reading for anyone who is interested in the curtural context of the building process.

Outstanding work!
From the Tally Shooter Writers' Group:

The sixth edition of this perennial best-seller has finally hit the streets! (OK,it finally hit the "river" since it's only available at Amazon.com right now.)

Very much up-to-date, the revisions to the 1999 edition of the NCO's bible provide Army noncoms with a made-to-order reference for just about any situation they may come across in today's modern army. The author, CSM (Retired) Robert S. Rush, has taken this guide to new heights. There are revised sections in the guide on caring leadership, training, NCO career development and promotions, awards and decorations, and "customs and courtesies." Army policy concerning the new fraternization rules-of-engagement is included and the latest military Web site info pertinent to NCOs is included as appendix.

The benefits of owning this book are enormous. Tuck it in your BDU trouser pocket before you deploy and you will have a modern day reference containing individual treatises on one of the broadest compilations of NCO subject matter ever made available in print.

A must-have guide.

Needle: Studies Module I11 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons)

Great wilderness adventure leads to an epic confrontation
Frank Mentzer's classic will take your high-level heroes (8-10) into the sinister jungles of the south, in an attempt to appease a wealthy king's curiosity - an ancient monolith, obviously of great arcane power, looms over the ruins of a lost civilization, its magics and meaning unknown. Why? How is it controlled? Well, the answer to that question is the easy part, getting back home in one piece is the fun one... prepare yourselves for giant dragonflies, lots of new monsters, pirates, spider swarms, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" expeditions complete with cannon fodder (um, I mean servants), and a nice arch-rival you might have heard of, goes by the name of Tiamat...
