Thank god someone reissued this book
O'Connor is rightly famous mostly for his short stories, but his criticism - both The Lonely Voice and A Mirror In the Roadway - along with this volume of his memoirs, well, they're all just really good. I found this book in a library many years ago and there are a hundred scenes that still spring instantly to life, and sentences that are always going to be part of how I look at the world. He betrays his greatest talent in the fact that the book reads like a collection of wonderful chapters rather than a coherent whole, but each is filled with the spirit of a generous, funny, humane man, one of those rare authors that you wish you could hang out with. The people that assure that books keep getting read seem to be forgetting about O'Connor a little, but the pages they keep alive rarely seem to stay in the blood and brain like his do.

Get the facts here!
For many years since the end of the WW2 there had been a rather controversial debate among the physicists and science researchers about the reasons why Germany did not or could not develope a nuclear bomb during the war. This was despite the fact that the Germans had a six-month head-start on uranium fission research, discovered in Otto Hahn's lab in 1938. This book (published in 1993) discloses the long classified transcripts of the conversations taken place among some ten leading German nuclear scientists (among them the brilliant Werner Heisenberg) who were detained after the war and held at the Farm Hall, England, while their conversations were overheard, transcribed, and translated without their own knowledge. This document is of great value to the readers and researchers who are enthusiastic about finding out the decisive scientific, political, and historical facts from the 20th century.

Operation Zimmermann

More iffy history
More iffy history. This is the scenario for Operation Zimmermann: The Germans invade the United States through Mexico. An elite group of soldiers from the Afrika Korps invades Texas and it's up to a handful of American soldiers and reservists to halt them. It's all part of a German plan called "Operation Zimmermann". The title of the 1985 Frank Geron novel refers to the Zimmermann Telegram, which was aimed at getting Mexico into World War I on the side of the Axis. Yes, that was what the Central Powers were also called during the First World War. Needless to say, the Zimmermann Telegram, named for the German foreign minister at the time, failed because it was intercepted by the British and sent on to our government. When President Wilson read it, he was so furious that he ultimately declared war on Germany. That was one of the reasons we entered that war. The other one was the German practice of unrestricted submarine warfare.

Optimizing Quality in Electronics Assembly: A Heretical Approach

An essential reference for electronics Mfg/Engr/QA folks!
The authors have used real-world measures of quality (=dependability) to define a strategy for improving the TRUE QUALITY of manufacturing output for electronic products and sub-assemblies. If you're involved in electronic design and manufacturing (as I am), chances are your present employer is doing many costly things in the name of Quality that you KNOW are counterproductive. This gem of a book points out a lot of these practices, and provides OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE about how they're bad and why we do them anyway. And if you're like me, this book will also point out a few things you DIDN'T KNOW where counterproductive, too. Reading and studying this book has made me DETERMINED to fight the forces of pseudo-quality that are a growing menace within the company I work for. Wish me luck!

Wonderful!
"Out in the Open is a bilingual compilation of Cathal Ó Searcaigh's finest poems. Featuring his most celebrated poems to date, and accompanying English translations by Frank Sewell. Cathal Ó Searcaigh has, over the past decade, emerged as one of Ireland's most distinguished modern-day poets. "His confident internationalism", according to Theo Dorgan, writing in Irish Poetry Since Kavanagh, (Four Courts Press, 1996), "has already begun to channel new modes, new possibilities, into the writing of Irish language poetry in our time." Ó Searcaigh is fast becoming a poet of international renown - particularly since the publication of his bilingual collection Homecoming/An Bealach 'na Bhaile (CIC 1993). Selections of his work have already been translated and published in ten languages. A French edition of his poems, titled La Chemin Du Retour/Pilleadh an Deoraí, edited by A.J. Hughes, was issued by the publishing house La Barbacane in Paris in 1996. In the past few years Cathal has read his work at Arts Festivals and literary celebrations in Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Wales, Scotland, England and Canada." - text from bookirish

Hilarious
Mares and Bryan present a hilarious book, which sets up the premise of the small rural state of Vermont taking on the United States government by seceding from the Union. Great insights and extremely funny humor is laden throughout the book. A must read for any true Vermonter. Beware "flatlanders".
