devastating laser wit, femme fatale, gin
With his first published novel, Rich gives us his mercenary view of the future. Darkly creative. Imaginative and round characters. Effective plot. Booze. Rich's now almost-standard slinky seductress with a bullet size conscious. Magnesium heart. A Bad for you woman and imminently desireable. Plot suitably dynamic. Character driven. The action, based no doubt on Rich's stint as a US Army Ranger and veteran of that hellbroth, Grenada, bursts across the pages like tracer fire into a pitiless darkness. Overall, a seething work of force that will force you to ponder the future relationship between man and machine . . . and slinky femmes fatales wielding hearts of heavy metal.

Modern noir at it's best
Marlowe on amphetamines. The entire series is consistantly good and quite addictive. The action never lets up and the flippant repartee is a pleasure to read. Buy one and you'll buy them all. One rarely sees this combination of gunplay and intelligence.

an eyes-open meditation
I opened this book expecting a quick read: another warm-and-fuzzy meditation on the art of fly-fishing, and by extension a meditation on life (and how to live it). I didn't get what I was expecting, except for the quick read part. Frank Soos's little book is actually much better than that. Soos indeed does provide the fishing/life metaphor for our consideration, but he honestly deconstructs much that's held sacred in both. What is the good of this bamboo fly rod? he asks. By every objective measure, graphite rods are better. But while most fishing writers would, at that point, verge off into some squishy promenade through the lore and rhetoric of fly-fishing, Soos deconstructs these easy answers as well. And, by extension, he deconstructs some of the sacred beliefs most of us hold onto because we believe we must. In the end, Soos might agree with us, but not because he's taken the answer for granted. The meditation I expected from this book was one of silence, stillness, darkness, the meditation of a disciple sitting erect and cross-legged on a mat in the corner. Instead, this is a meditation hiked to, stumbled in, slipped across, cast about for, and otherwise sought fully and honestly. Please do read it. Also, I was very impressed with the beautifyl illustrations by Kesler Woodward. They seem mildly incongruous with the subject at times, but close and comfortable enough not to be distracting.

A Modern Classic
Winner of the Flannery O'Connor award for his awkwardly brilliant short story collection Unified Field Theory, Frank Soos understands that casting out for truth can get you hung up and wet before it makes you any wiser. In less adroit hands, a book like Bamboo Fly Rod Suite has the potential to fall apart like a poorly tied fly once it hits the water, but Soos keeps the central questions of this piece dancing gracefully above the surface with the same dry wit and surprising depth of his short fiction. A must-read for fly fishermen and a wonderful discovery for everyone else.

Greek Life
As an 11th grader in a Greek 2 Honors program I find this book incredibly helpful. It not only explains things well but the vocabulary taught in it corresponds to vocabulary needed to read outside texts. Coming from a student, I would recommend this book to any other student attempting to master Greek. It is very well written and easy to understand.

A foundation for a lifetime of learning
As a "guinea pig" used for the original edition of this book, I can wholehearedly endorse it as providing an excellent foundation for a lifetime of being able to read Attic and other dialects of Ancient Greek (the primary author was also an excellent instructor).

A review of the battle from a present Union officer.
A great read of the historical turning point of the U. S. Civil War. Haskell describes the three days of battle and the aftermath. Haskell was subsequently killed in one of the latter battles of the Civil War. Although inaccurate at places, it gives a first hand account of this battle, and the subsequent suffering of the soldiers. This is a good account of the life of a soldier.

Engrossing first person account of the Battle of Gettysburg
Colonel Haskell's perspective on the Battle of Gettysburg provides intriguing detail and insight omitted by secondary sources.

Essential for Research
Even a cursory interest in the so-called "far right" political movement will quickly turn up this little pamphlet. Behind Communism is available from a wide selection of groups, from Christian Identity to Neo-Nazi organizations. This is because the booklet addresses the main concern that all of these groups share: the Jews and their machinations. The cover is somewhat deceiving, as it shows a rather hazy image of Uncle Joe Stalin. This is surprising because the author admits that Stalin was one of the few non-Jews involved in the higher echelons of world Communism. It would seem a picture of Anna Pauker would be more appropriate, but apparently not. The booklet is written by Frank Britton and it seems to have been first published in 1951 or 1952, although my copy is not dated.

Britton starts his exegesis by examining the history of the Jews. He spends considerable space showing how their presence in Europe shaped both Christians and Jews. Christians, according to Britton, despised the Jews because of their tendency to dominate unpleasant occupations such as money lending and the like. The Jews themselves lived in self-imposed ghettos where they built up a rabid dislike of gentiles. It was from these ghettos that Communism and Zionism emerged. Britton's concern, of course, is with Communism. He sees Communism as a Jewish racial movement and that this accounts for the high percentage of Jews present in its ranks, especially at the top. Most of the pamphlet details the Russian revolution and how Jews brought about Communism. Pictures and names of prominent Jews are thrown about quite a bit. Britton points out that although Lenin wasn't a Jew, he was married to one, as was Stalin (Britton is often concerned with Jewish-Gentile marriages. He seems to feel that a Jewish bride is one step away from being a Jew.). The last section of the booklet attempts to show how Jews in America have time and again been involved in Communist plots. The Rosenbergs, Klaus Fuchs, the Hollywood Ten and others all make an appearance here. Britton finishes by listing name after name of Jews involved in Hollywood, from actors to directors to musicians.

I will say this is not the most hysterical anti-Jewish writing I've ever read. There is much worse out there. There are a few times Britton slips into slur, but most of the booklet tries to remain calm and reasoned. There are errors to be found. At one point, Britton points out that almost all of the Russian intelligentsia were Jews, due to educational preferences. Later, when discussing the Red Terror, Britton says that the Reds wiped out the entire upper class of Russia. If Communism is a Jewish movement, why would the Jewish Reds wipe out their racial comrades? Britton also says that Nicholas II was in the process of turning Russia into a constitutional monarchy when he was forced to abdicate. Everything I've read to date points to the contrary. Nicholas II was an autocrat who had no intention of giving up real power to the Duma or anyone else. Almost every attempt at reform made by the tsarist system was an abysmal failure. To credit Nicholas with this type of enlightenment is just wrong. Even if Nicholas was attempting this type of reform, it came WAY to late to do any good.

Behind Communism is an essential reference to anybody doing research on anti-Jewish groups. Reading this pamphlet alone will definitely give insights into how these people think and feel.

The How, Why and Who of international Communism.
This stapleback pamphlet gives a summarized history of Communism, the Bolshevik/Communist Party in Russia, and Communist infiltration of American society and its institutions. The subject delineated here is the massive Jewish involvement in Communism. The author posists that the whole movement is a Jewish racial cause, with some gentile followers. BEHIND COMMUNISM is full of pictures, lists and diagrams showing who the Communists are. The top-dog Communist leaders, Lenin and Stalin are gentiles, but they were married to Jewish wives. Stalin is always portrayed as a virulent "anti-Semite" and pogromist, but he was married to the daughter of the Politiburo member Kaganovitch, and Stalin's daughter was married to Kaganovitch's son. Soviet Forign Minister Molotov's wife was also Jewish. In fact, she was the sister of Karp, owner of Karp's Import-Export Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The latter part discusses the Communist Party in America, which had a disproportionate Jewish membership and whose members were highly educated professionals rather than working-class men. Many of those convicted of selling nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union were Jewish, such as the Rosenburgs. Finally the Hollywood film industry is shown as the world's leading producer of Communist propaganda. The author explains how Hollywood films are designed to cause race-hatred among black and Mexican minorities and at the same time instill whites with a sense of guilt about race relations. There are some instances where the author makes inapropriate remarks, but these are minimal. The tone is relativly balanced, maintaining a pro-Christian, pro-European viewpoint.

In all, BEHIND COMMUNISM rails against the romanticism that liberals attribute to the Russian Revoloution. When the Jewish Communists took power in Russia, all H-E-double-hockey-sticks broke loose. Tens of thousands of Christians were massacred, and five million landowners in the Ukraine were intentionally starved to death during the early 1930's to solidify Communist dominance and freedom of Religion was abolished.

A story that needs to be told.
The article I read about the book is from the local county paper, The Independent Journal dated feb 6,1999. The author is interviewed and the conclusions are discussed openly. It is a great format for the book because each of the men going for the inventor of the mountain title are interviewed and quoted. I went to high school with the real inventor and hung with them. Read the book to see who it was.

The MTB history book I've been waiting for!
I read a Berto story in Mountain Bike magazine regarding the history of the mountain bike, so when I saw this book, I had to pick it up. It's a great read with all the usual suspects (Breeze, Fisher, Ritchey, Sinyard...), and as an avid mountain biker, factoid freak, and history buff, this book answered a lot of questions about the origins of the mountain bike. Living in Mountain View, CA, it's great to be able to ride the trails (at least the one's still open) where the mountain bike was born.

Blacks in Antiquity: Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience

A well-written discussion of Greek-African contact
Snowden seems to really know what he's talking about. To someone as ignorant in the subject as I was, it was a great read to learn all about the contact between the ancient Africans and Greeks. The pictures and explanations of artifacts are especially interesting.

An outstanding piece of research
Snowden is not an Afro-centric writer, he is a well qualified professor of classics, an accredited expert in his field.

"Blacks in Antiquity" presents a comprehensive history and analysis of ancient Ethiopian "black" culture. In the 18th and 19th centuries, some American anthropologists and theologians have attempted to rewrite Ethiopian history to show this advanced culture as one not truly black. The roots of that go into the very heart of the origin of western racism in Colonial America and can be found to affect our implicit views of race even today.

Snowden shows from historical, textual and archaeological evidence that the Ethiopians were indeed a "black" race. He also establishes their position of respect and complete equal acceptance with other ancient cultures of the time. In essence, it shows, while perhaps not explicitly stating it, that racism is a much more recent invention than many have supposed-- especially those hold to a "Black curse" or "inferiority" theory in physiology or theology.

If you want a volume that presents evidence in a straight foward and empirically supportable manner, this is an excellent choice.

Botticelli : images of love and spring

Good book on Botticelli
This is a good book to start with to learn about Botticelli. It says it has 57 color images (72 total), but many are details of the same works, or related works by other artists. 6 most famous paintings are focused on. The text is pretty interesting, including some art history and explanations of those works. But the small size of the book (about 10 inches high), doesn't allow detailed reproductions. Basically, this is a great book to own if you would rather not pay (the money) for a more complete book, or if you prefer lighter reading. I found "Botticelli: Images of Love and Spring" a pleasant surprise.

illuminating and engaging
After reading this book I went to the Uffizi and saw Botticelli in a new light. His writing leads you through the paintings as if you are unravelling a mystery, giving you insight that a modern viewer would otherwise never have. The book is both wonderfully concise and substantial, with details, illustrations, references to the cultural of some of the most beautiful and well-known paintings in the world.

Excellent for people seeking photographs of Wright's work
This book is an excellent source of photographs of Wright's architecture. While it contains only minimal supplimental text, the pictures are stunning displays of one man's vision.

Great in depth look into specific area.
This book is a wonderful in it's reviewing of specific buildings by FLLW. The book is full of wonderful color photographs of the structures as well as short articles on each. This is the book that puts all of FLLW's architecture in the state of California into one volume. This demonstrates how the architect could adapt an architectual language to fit uniquely into a particular region. Their is also a complete list of all the buildings Wright designed the be built in California that were never erected. This is a must read for anyone deeply interested in the architecture of FLLW.

It Covers The Gammit
This book has been most helpful in reviewing real life classroom and educational issues and seeing how others address the situation. I do not always agree with the steps taken, but it is enlightening. Especially helpful for student teachers.

Excellent & Thought Provoking
"Case Studies" is the best book I have read regarding music education since, "What They Didn't Teach You In Choral Methods". While, I believe, Mr's. Abrahams and Head were targeting the Student Teaching and First-Year crowd, everyone can benefit from reading the book. I have known teachers with 10 years experience who have benefitted from using the book to analyze and re-iterate their teaching styles and choices.

This wonderful book includes case studies which end in choices you, the teacher, must make. Get a journal and begin! Whether you're an experienced teacher or new to the profession, you'll be glad you took the time to seriously consider such topics as Copyright infringement, your personal music ed philosophy, stereotypes, faculty relationships, auditions, learning styles, technology integration, grading policies, defending your program choices, and other interesting dilemmas.

Do not overlook this book! Many of us did not receive this kind of guidance in undergrad or even in our master's work. It never hurts to go back to basics and re-learn what you think you already know about yourself. You might be surprised!
