True Character Study - Awesome character
If nothing else can be said for Warren Lehrer you can say that he is excellent at capturing people. I love this book. I've read all the portrait series books (I had to for class) and Claude was my second favorite. Brother Blue was my first. Claude is a captivating guy. I can see why women love him. If you're looking for a book that truly reveals and captures an honestly interesting character, buy this book. Heck, it's worth it just to read Claude's advice for having great relationships.

a must for orgo students!
This book simplifies the many aspects covered in "Fessenden & Fessenden" book, and the rxn's at the end are extremely helpful to study for exams. Unfortunately, this book doesn't really get into nucleic acids, but it does a great job covering all functional groups synthesis & rxns! A key book for reference as well as explanations regarding intermediates for rxns. A+

Great Review
This was a great help to me as I prepared for my finals. The last few pages are especially helpful in summerizing the numerous reactions in organic chemistry. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a concise review before a test.

Clinical Theology: A Theological and Psychological Basis to Clinical Pastoral Care

A constructive contribution to Pastoral Counselling
Frank Lake's outstanding treatise about pastoral counselling and psychology is an interdisciplinary project. It combines both pastoral psychology and contemporary psychology/psychoanalysis. Lake's "spiritual research" commences from the christian faith and outlines its importance for the nowadays man and his life within society,in view to broaden a modern understanding of the pastoral ideas of christianity. Lake does not simply work upon the authors' writings of the New Testament, but elaborates them in order to fulfil his in-depth-of-the-topic investigation: that pastoral counselling is line-to-line connected to psychology/psy-choanalysis, for inherits the foundations unto a fruitful scrutinization of the needs and expectations of the modern man, with the perspective to guide him towards psychospiritual elevation and self-realisation.

Clinical Theology is excellent, & still available in Britain
Frank Lake's book is unique. It presents a Christian alternative to Freudian psychoanalysis. Instead of relating psychiatric problems to the sex drive, he relates them to early problems in the mother child relationship, and to trauma produced by those problems. He shows how our relationship with God can replace what was lacking in the Mother child relationship. The book is out of print in the United States, but is still in print in Great Britain. It's worth the trouble of ordering from Britain.

Cold Quarry (Frank Pavlicek Mysteries, 3)
Published in Audio Cassette by Americana Pub Inc (May, 2003)
Authors: Andy Straka and Charlton Griffin
Amazon base price: $25.00

Right Out of the Headlines
Private Eye writer Andy Straka excells at pulling his plotlines straight out of the headlines, as he shows again with "Cold Quarry," his latest entry in the fine Frank Pavlicek series. Basing a novel on terrorism these days is risky. If the plotline is too close to real events it'll be decried as cheap sensationalism, and it's no longer fashionable to devise wildly unrealistic terrorist stroylines as it was before September 11th. Straka strikes just the right balance, combining a gritty, realistic scenerio that's just far enough away from actual events to keep it comfortable.

Straka's hero is a hard-boiled P.I. of the old school who nevertheless has his tender moments. He hails from Charlottesville, Virginia (home of the University of Virginia), but this time out Straka effectively takes Pavlicek to the wilds of West Virginia to do battle with an assortment of white supremacists, lowlifes and shadowy government types. He's joined again by his sometime sidekick and former homicide partner, Jake Toronto, whose backstory gets some examination this time out.

I won't give away too much of the plot other than to say the book starts out with the murder of a friend of Pavlicek and Toronto who is a fellow enthusiast for the sport of falconry. The official police line is that the death was a hunting accident, but when Pavlicek is brutally attacked while visiting the crime scene, he immediately suspects foul play. When he starts asking questions, other people start to die and it becomes apparent that his friend Toronto is mixed up in something very dangerous.

Overall, "Cold Quarry" contains plenty of action as well as colorful and sympathetic characters and firmly establishes the Frank Pavlicek series as one of the best P.I. series to come along in recent years.

exciting thought provoking who-done-it
In Nitro, West Virginia, Falconer Chester Carew is working his bird Elo when the falcon suddenly disappears. Chester is able to track him via a telemetry recoverer, but he walks into an ambush and is murdered, shot in the back. Attending the funeral is fellow falconers Frank Pavlicek and his former partner in the NYPD Jake Toronto. Chester's widow wants to hire Frank, who now works as a private investigator in Virginia, to find out who killed her husband.

The police tell her it was probably a drunken hunter but Mrs. Carew thinks the Stonewall Rangers, a local right wing militia group, had something to do with it. As soon as Frank starts asking questions and stirring the locals up, he is asked to "stand down" by the local police, the FBI and the ATF who have a sting operation in place that takes priority. Frank isn't one to back off and that is a good trait because he learns that the stingers are about to be stung.

The protagonist, Frank Pavlicek is a strong willed character who is so loyal to those he cares about that when Mr. Toronto is arrested, Frank does everything in his power to help him. The events that take place in this book are a reflection of the persistent atmosphere of the United States government following the events of September 11, 2001. Andy Straka not only knows how to weave current events into his story line, but also he creates an exciting thought provoking who-done-it.

Excellent review of our History
However, in order to get a better understanding of the internal conflict in the 20th century it is advisable to complement its reading with 'Entre la legitimidad y la violencia: Colombia 1875-1994'. Marco Palacios (2000)

A comprehensive accounting of the crisis in Colombia
A brilliant book...well written and meticulously researched. "Colombia: Fragmented Land, Divided Society" easily exceeds the legendary work of American graybeard...David Bushnell. This book is essential reading for anyone attempting to obtain a special competence in Colombian affairs. Highly recommended.

NOT TO BE MISSED
In a thoroughly modern approach to allergies, leading allergist Dr. Frank Kwong teaches how to be involved in your own care. THE COMPLETE ALLERGY BOOK covers every base, yet is easy to follow and fascinating to read.

Being a pack rat, I especially appreciated the chapter "Surveying and Cleaning the Home," which has educated me about clutter. Each chapter offers its own surprises. I have learned that in buying a condo or renting a unit, I should be provided with air ducting design information. I didn't suspect that in some buildings the exhaust from one unit actually becomes the incoming air of the next unit. There is even a chapter on sex and allergies. Yes, you can be allergic to your partner.

THE COMPLETE ALLERGY BOOK is a wonderful reference volume for every home. It enlightens and clarifies, and in case of serious trouble can be a lifesaver.

A must have for all Allergy sufferers!
I needed a book that would help me understand my allergies and how to live with them. This book was exactly what I was looking for. The author uses easy to understand terms that makes it an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that suffers from some sort of allergy.

The Complete Frank Miller Batman
Published in Hardcover by Longmeadow Press (December, 1989)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A true "Collector's Edition"
It was a strange time for comics, that this collection could be made. Sold at the height of the 80's collectors boom, "The Complete Frank Miller Batman" is a luxury edition of the type usually reserved for "Moby Dick." Leather-bound and silver lined, the book smells of quality. High paper quality and good inks contribute to a comics experience rarely seen elsewhere. Truly, it is the luxury car of comics.

The stories inside deserve this level of presentation. "The Dark Knight Returns," available in many other collected editions, is one of the premier works of art produced by the comics medium. "Batman: Year One" is a gem of equal quality. The third piece, "Wanted: Santa Claus-Dead or Alive" is not written by Miller, and lacks the drama of the other stories. He is the artist, only. Still, it is a nice single issue Batman story, representative of that era.

Also included in this edition are introductions by comics resident genius Alan Moore, as well as Richard Burning and a little introspection by Frank Miller.

Definitely worth picking up.

A Must Have for the Comic Collection
Frank Miller revolutionized comics in America, and quite possibly the world. With sophisticated plots and asorbing artwork, the reader becomes intangled with the charaters as much as he or she would with any play, movie, or novel. This collection, has two of Miller's greatist works: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. The third story is cute and works well in the collection as a bridge between the other two stories.

"Batman: Year One" is the first story in the collection (actually the last one of the three written) and it is a story that many Batman fans had hoped the fisrt Batman movie would have been based on. It is well told, and the major players in the Batman saga are introduced: Batman, Gordon, Alfed and Selina Kyle (Catwomen). It is a well written story and as good as any in the last 20 years of any genre.

The second story in this special is "Wanted: Santa Claus-Dead or Alive." This is a quick piece and doesn't involve too much, but does show a caring and revernt Batman.

The last is Miller's magnum opus, "The Dark Knight Returns." This four chapter story is spectacular and a great piece of work: both in story telling and various artist expression. This psychological drama deals with an aging Batman, who at the age of 55, comes back to fight crime after a ten year absence. Miller insightfully deals with many subjects now addressed by our popular media. For example, the idea of a liberal soceity blaming crime on the agents of heroism instead on personal evil. Miller writes and demonstrates that victims are innocent people who try to live a virtous life, and Batman fights to protect a city dying of a cancer.

Comic collectors need this special leather bound book with commentaries by Richard Burning and Alan Moore. Frank Miller himself writes some notes which personalizes this special edition that much more.

The best gyn reference textbook
Very well written and practically laid out. Superior to Novak's, Kistner, or Danforth.

A truly comprehensive, clearly written gynecology text.
I found Comprehensive Gynecology to be the best text I have read in this field. It is clear and consise yet comprehensively summarizes the current literature on each topic. Each chapter begins with a glossary of terms and ends with an excellent point by point review of key concepts. The text covers basic sciences, comprehensive evaluation of the female, general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The chapters are well organized and include a synopsis of the current literature. I would recommend this text to anyone studing for fellowship exams. I have also read Copeland's Gynecology and in comparison found Comprehensive Gynecology to be superior in organization and readability.
